Race 2 - September 3: Junior Road Championships Individual Time Trials

Josefski in stunning upset against rainbow rival

By John Michael Flynn with additional reporting from John Caskey

Queensland's Hayden Josefski partly made up for the disappointment of having to sit out the final of the teams pursuit junior world championship, by scoring an upset victory against his good mate and fierce rival, Cameron Meyer, in the national junior road time trial championship today.

Motivated for a big performance after missing the kick in Saturday's road race, Josefski was up against Meyer, the triple world and national junior champion.

"Cameron's not that hard to beat, but winning against the world champion is pretty good," Josefski told Cyclingnews.

Few riders other than Cameron's brother Travis would better know the strengths and weaknesses of Meyer, but it might have helped that Josefski was racing with home track advantage, given he hails from just up the road, in the Queensland town of Maryborough.

"I trained for it, I had a big day before in the road race chasing most of the day, took it easy in the road race, knew I had a big day the following day."

It was also a convincing win for Josefski, who took ten seconds out of Meyer on the roads of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, earning a much deserved national champion's jersey.

Favourites in the mix

Stunning time trial performances by most of the favourites was the theme for day two of the championships.

Riders who had dominated the national track championships in April or returned from world championship duties filled almost all the leading places across the 15, 17 and 19 year age groups.

Jessica Allen of the well organised Western Australian Camp took the U/15 women's time trial by just four seconds from remarkable Tasmanian Amy Cure, who was backing up from yesterday's road race victory.

West Australia's Michaela Anderson claimed third five seconds off the pace. All of the place getters chose to ride track bikes with brakes on the rough, undulating course at Yandina in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Double gold for Morton

The Under 15 men's time trial could not have been a story of greater contrast. The winner, Lachlan Morton of New South Wales, prepared for the national championships in the United States, while Jordan Kirby had to content himself with Maryborough in Queensland.

Morton was a convincing winner by 20 seconds and was delighted that a team-mate, Liam Neville took third, some 15 seconds behind Kirby. The victory also provided Morton with his second gold medal for the championships.

The under 17 women's time trial produced a re-run of the pursuit finals from this year's national junior track championships, but with a different result.

Diminutive powerhouse Jessy Byrnes of Queensland turned the tables by 10 seconds on Western Australia's Sarah Kent, who did well to be back among the medals after struggling during yesterday's road race.

Camille Pallet, the gold medallist in yesterday's under 17 women's road race, clocked the third fastest time, just two seconds behind her team-mate.

Byrnes, like all dedicated time trial riders, provided a unique perspective on the course, " I liked it a lot, its tougher and hillier than a normal course," Byrnes said.

The under 17 men's time trial provided one of the more outstanding rides of the championships. Of the seventy starters in the field, as many as thirty could have been seen as legitimate contenders - that was until Under 17 National Junior Pursuit Champion Dennis Rohan launched himself into action. Rohan won by a comfortable margin of 42 seconds.

Thomas Palmer from the well prepared ACT stable finished second and W.A's Michael Freiberg was a further 13 seconds back.

Cromwell Strikes Back

It took just a day for South Australian Tiffany Cromwell to bounce back from yesterday's defeat in the Under 19 women's road race at the National junior championships.

Competing in a disappointingly small under 19 women's field, Cromwell managed to turn on the power when it mattered most during the race of truth, taking the U19 women's title ahead of Victorian Peta Mullins and WA's Kylie Hansen.
