Big man from Tasmania proves strongest

There may have been strong winds but it was a massive breakaway that has blown the Herald Sun Tour apart. Karl Menzies, the big man from Tasmania, proved to be the strongest of the 16-man breakaway, and jumped clear on the final lap of the three lap tough finishing circuit to outstay young Victorian Drapac Porshe rider Mitch Docker. In a battle of the powerhouses, German Tobias Erler narrowly outsprinted Rob McLachlan for third.
Menzies also snatched the prestigious leader’s jersey from overnight leader Hilton Clarke as he and superstar Robbie McEwen finished in the main peloton, 29 and a half minutes in arrears.
"It was a very hard day, it was awesome. We new it was going to be like that because of the wind. We just worked hard to get the gap out a bit. At the finish I was able to slip off the front, and held on for the win," an elated Menzies said.
As riders left the start in Shepparton and turned onto the long straight road to Kyabram, the hammer went down and the wind stepped up. The wind was right behind them and the speed was nudging 60 kph, and any rider that was unlucky enough to puncture at that stage was in for a long lonely day.
Race favourite, Simon Gerrans was very active and after continuous attacks a small group got clear. With most of the big hitters and race favourites in the lead group, and with most of the main team represented, it always looked an impossible task for the chasers. The Dutch and Portuguese riders were giving it everything to close the gap as they weren't represented and the lead stayed at only 45 seconds for about 40 kilometres. But finally the rubber-band snapped and once it got to 2 minutes, it was all over. The lead then just kept growing.

As the leaders approached the three finishing circuits, it was the ever aggressive Canadian Dominique Rollin who made the first move and he opened up a good gap. But it was Gerrans who counter attacked but to no avail.
"Unfortunately I was a bit outnumbered," Gerrans said. "My teammates Trent Lowe and Henk did quite a bit early on to establish the break and they were a bit cooked near the end. So when the attacks started I had a couple of goes, but Navigators had a couple there, Drapac had a couple there as did HealthNet and the numbers game paid off in the end. Once I realized I couldn't win the stage I just thought I'd cut my losses and contain the time gaps and keep it close."
But it was the burly Tasmanian that made the most of the day.
"I would have been happy with a bunch sprint but riders were attacking everywhere," said new GC Leader, Menzies. "My teammate Kirk (O'Bree) chased down all the attacks and I just found a moment before the last lap here when they all just propped for a second, and I hit them. Once I got the gap I was able to go for it while the others messed around a bit. But young Docker rode well and got to me on top of the circuit. He went past me and I was able to jump by him again just before the final corner."
