Roulston wins the 50th edition of Southland

Hayden Roulston crossed the finish line at Invercargill this afternoon safely in the leading bunch, and with the tour crown safely in his possession.
He had come through a dramatic final day, reclaiming the yellow jersey on the morning stage and successfully defending it in the afternoon. After the race, an emotional Roulston told what the win meant to him.
"Six weeks ago I was told that I would never race again, but here I am, winning the biggest race in New Zealand, so that to me personally is the biggest thing ever. This morning was obviously crucial to me and I'm just pleased that everything worked out," he said.
As in the morning stage, gale force winds blew the field along at high speeds and soon after the start at Winton, the peloton was spread out and broke into several bunches. As the riders hit the cross winds, the field split further, but the group of 16 up the front of the race contained all of the major players.
The windy conditions negated any attacks from Jeremy Vennell's Calder Stewart team and their allies in the Southland Times team. Roulston's own Cycle Surgery team were mostly blown away in the morning stage but he obviously had friends in the strong Trek Zookeepers team, led by last year's tour winner Gordon McCauley and his former track racing team-mate Greg Henderson.
40 kilometres into the stage, Kristian House launched an attack and slipped away from the bunch and was joined shortly afterwards by Fraser MacMaster. The pair stayed away but approaching Invercargill, House rode away and crossed the finish line clear of MacMaster.
"I didn't expect to stay away to be honest, I was trying to set it up for MacLachlan," House said.
House reflected on his team's overall performance: "We tried hard but we were outridden. We didn't lose it because we made mistakes. We lost it because we were outridden," he said.
