MacLachlan wins Stage but Strong in yellow in Tour of Southland

Australian Rob MacLachlan (Calder Stewart) won the 165k stage of the PowerNet Tour of Southland today and Kiwi Aaron Strong (Trek Zookeepers) took over the yellow jersey with an eighteen second buffer over Scott Lyttle (Southland Times) and Jeremy Vennell (Calder Stewart).
MacLachlan left the peloton in a group of nine who chased down and caught an earlier break of eight riders just over 100k into the Stage. He and team mate Jeremy Vennell were the strongest in the break and when the bunch began to fall apart from a series of attacks ten kilometers from the finish it was the Australian who rode clear and finished the Stage at Gore ten seconds ahead of American Garrett Peltonen and Kiwi Matt Gilbert.
MacLachlan told how it happened. “I found myself in a break chasing but I was kind of lucky having Jeremy (Vennell) up there. I didn’t really want to take people like Aaaron Strong across because he’s a dangerous rider for GC, and as it turned out I had a pretty easy ride across and when I got there I was prepared to work as hard as I could for Jeremy but it really came down to a race at the end. I attacked and I still had two guys with me but when I looked around they were gone so I just kept going to the finish”.
Vennell played a big part in his team mates win and finished eleventh in the Stage but he played down his chances for the Tour. “To tell the truth I’ve had a hard season and can’t wait to see the end of it. I’ve been crook lately and I’ll be quite happy to finish but I’ll help Rob all I can” he said.
Strong now has a handy lead on GC but he hadn’t planned on making such an early move. “I missed the early break but the opportunity came to go with the second group so I took it. Its really a bit early to be taking the jersey and hoping to keep it but that’s how it happened“ he said.
Hayden Roulston missed both of the breaks and dropped to tenth place at 1 minute 49 seconds but he doesn’t see it as the end of the race. “Obviously I’m a bit disappointed that I’ve lost the jersey but we’ve still got a guy up there anyway. Its only the second day and every day from now is hard. Its not over yet, that’s for sure” he said.
