Tjallingii, the unknown flying Dutchman

Not only did 28 year-old mountain biker Maarten Tjallingii (Skil-Shimano) surprise the wind-torn peloton on the opening stage of Tour of Belgium, he managed to give himself quite a surprise. "Originally, the guys [Kenny Van Hummel and Christophe Meschenmoser] led me out so that I could try and take the bonus seconds. [With one 10 km lap to go - Ed.] I saw a gap, so I had to try it. They [my teammates] told me, 'Take care so that you still have a bit left if they get you back'. I didn't see them coming back."
Tjallingii's brave attempt with 10 kilometres to go paid off after Quickstep failed to bring last year's overall winner Tom Boonen within striking distance. "This is huge," the Skil-Shimano rider said after he line as he was embraced by his squealing team mates. "I never expected to stay away. With the strong wind I thought it wouldn't work. But when I saw that the chasers weren't getting closer, I began to believe in it. I said to myself, 'turn the gas up.'"
The victory was Tjallingii's biggest in his fourth season as a professional rider, after he won the Tour du Faso in 2003. It puts him in the yellow leader's jersey for tomorrow's stage from Oostende to Knokke-Heist.
Behind Tjallingii, a strong Boonen outsprinted Max van Heeswijk (Discovery Channel) and Baden Cooke (Unibet.com) for second place. "Tjallingii has made a big achievement," a slightly disappointed Boonen explained after the finish. We didn't get much support. On the last lap, we had to do everything and because of that we were two men too short."
How it unfolded

132 riders had most certainly expected windy conditions when they rode out of Oostende at 11.40. It is unclear whether the greater part of them had expected to be dropped after seven kilometres of the five day race. The riders rode at an average speed of 46 km/h during the first 20 kilometres, and the blue clad favourite team of Quickstep was pulling hard at the front. The peloton quickly broke up into several echelons, and when things started to settle, 23 riders formed a front group. World champion Tom Boonen, Wilfried Cretskens, Steven de Jongh, Servais Knaven and Sebastien Rosseler who were responsible for the peloton breaking up, represented QuickStep in the break, and the other riders were Geert Steegmans and Dutch champion Leon Van Bon (Davitamon-Lotto), Max Van Heeswijk (Discovery), Baden Cooke, Jez Hunt and Erwin Thijs (Unibet), Nico Eeckhout (Chocolade Jacques), Frederic Amorison and Jurgen Van Loocke (Landbouwkrediet), Maarten Tjallingii, Kenny Van Hummel and Christoph Meschenmoser (Skil-Shimano), Francesco Planckaert (Jartazi), Sven Nys, Lars Boom, Kai Reus and Tom Stamsnijder (Rabobank Continental) and Ukrainian champion Mikhaylo Khalilov (LPR).
After 50 kilometres of racing, a second group containing Björn Leukemans and Nico Mattan (Davitamon) and Nick Nuyens (Quickstep) among others chased at one and a half minutes' distance. Behind them, a big part of the peloton were distanced by more than five minutes. Kai Reus of Rabobank suffered an unfortunate accident with 70 kilometres to go, when he looked over his shoulders, hit a wheel and had to part with several square inches of skin from his backside. He made it back to the front group, but meanwhile his teammate Lars Boom lost contact, and was later caught by the chasing group, who were now losing time.
Having remained steady at 1'30 for a long while, the Mattan/Leukemans group fell back to more than three minutes behind, and the lead group could start to focus ahead, rather than on the followers. Sebastian Rosseler snatched the first bonus sprint as they were coming into Oostende for the 40 kilometre lap that proceeded the two final laps of ten kilometres each. Boonen suffered a flat just as the speed rose because of the sprint, but was able to get back easily enough as his four teammates wouldn't let the break get too far. Strangely enough, the chasing groups gained no time during this incident in the front group.
With forty kilometres to go, the gap to Leukemans' group was 7'45 and the front riders' main concerns were each other and not to forget the yellow sand from the Atlantic ocean that sprayed over the tarmac and over the riders. With 26 kilometres to go, Kenny Van Hummel initiated the first attack from the group, and was followed by a strong looking Gert Steegmans and a watching Sebastian Rosseler. Oddly, Van Hummel didn't help Steegmans in a break that initially looked good, and when he did, the chasing group was too close already. Before they were caught, Steegmans won the second intermediate sprint ahead of Rosseler who made a serious attempt, and Van Hummel.
Coming up to the last bonus sprint of the day, the Skil-Shimano riders tried to set Tjallingii up for the sprint, and they were not challenged by anyone else. Over the line, Tjallingii had a small gap and took the chance to extend it. Initially Quickstep didn't panic, but the Unibet riders who had been helping them at the front on and off until then decided that they would be off during this chase, and Quickstep had to sacrifice rider after rider in the chase of Tjallingii. During the last handful of kilometres, Tjallingii's gap of 28 seconds came down to around 20, but that was not close enough for the sprinting riders behind to reach him.
