22nd Tour de l'Aude - 2.1France, May 12-21, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 8 - May 19: Arques – Rennes Les Bains, 99 kmFleury finds her opportunityDe Goede moves into yellowBy Kristy Scrymgeour Stage Eight of Tour de L'Aude saw an interesting turn of events and a big change in the General Classification going into tomorrow's Queen stage. Winning the bunch sprint out of a break group of six riders was American Grace Fleury but it was Suzanne De Goede (AA Drink) also in that group that moved into the yellow jersey at the end of the stage. "This morning we talked about being aggressive in this stage and that we had to go early," Fleury told Cyclingnews. "I knew if I had good legs I would attack early, so just after the first sprint bonus there were some attacks and I decided to put in a hard attack and it worked." In the break with Fleury was Svetlana Bubnenkova (Fenixs Colnago), Olivia Gollan (Nobili), Joanne Kiesanowski (Univega), Amy Moore (T-Mobile), Suzanne De Goede (AA Drink), Maryline Salvetat (French National Team), Eva Lutz (Nurnberger) and Cindy Pieters (Belgian National Team). The course was 100km in length and included four category one climbs along the way. None of the climbs were terribly steep, but all long challenging with another small rise for the last few kilometers into Rennes les Bains for the finish. Bubnenkova proceeded to drive the break solo for the remainder on the race taking all the mountain sprints and aiming to move herself up in the general classification. "In the beginning," said Fleury, "it was just Bunenkova and I working with seven people sitting on so I stopped working and Bubnenkova just drove it. She'd drive it down each descent and shattered it. She was amazing." On the second climb, Buitenpoort started to attack with their GC riders Amber Neben and Susanne Ljungskog, but Ina Teutenberg (T-Mobile) close both attacks preparing for her teammates to attack. Kim Anderson went first and her attack was countered by Kimberly Baldwin (T-Mobile) who opened up a gap with Edita Pucinaskaite (Nobili) on her wheel. The pair rode together until the third climb when Baldwin fell off the pace and Pucinskaite continued solo. By the final climb, the Lithuanian's teammate Olivia Gollan had been dropped from the front group and sat up to wait for her. With two kilometers to go from the top of the climb, Gollan gave it everything and helped Pucinskaite to the top of the climb and sent her off solo once again. With the GC riders still looking at each other back in the bunch, another group rode off the front containing Buitenpoort rider Madeleine Sandig. Also in the group was Theresa Senff (AA Drink), Claudia Hausler (Nurnberger) and Edwige Pitel (Bianchi). Sandig was also riding towards the yellow jersey and had every reason to drive the break. The group caught and passed Moore and Pieters who had been dropped by the front group and eventually they also caught Baldwin and held their gap to the chasers to the finish. Meanwhile in the lead group, De Goede realized the break would stay away and that she could possibly move into the overall lead. "I first thought Bubnekova would be the one to take over the jersey," explained De Goede, "but then I heard the classement so I also started to work at the front." For the last ten kilometers of the race De Goede and Bubnenkova drove the break and finished with 52" on Pucinskaite, 3'11" on the second break group and 3'38" on the next group that contained the main GC contenders. The gap was enough to put De Goede in yellow with Sandig holding on to second place overall. Pucinskaite moved up into fifth place overall and Bubnekova moved into the top ten with a firm lead in the mountains classification. Fleury said of the finish that she was basically following her director Jim Miller's advice on the finish. . I Couldn't really remember the finish. Jim said there was a little dip with about 300m to go and I knew I had to watch for Jo Jo [Kiesanowski]. So I had to start early." Fleury opened up a convincing gap and won the sprint with ease, with Kiesanowski and De Goede taking second and third place. Very excited with the win, Fleury said it was definitely her best result yet. "I was feeling ok today. Just trying to survive each climb," she said. "I've really just been trying to survive this tour and look for opportunities when they come." De Goede was also pleased to move into the yellow jersey, but conservative about how tomorrow's stage would go. "It's cool to have the jersey for the day," she said. "Tomorrow's a very hard stage. Of course I'll do my best and see how it goes." The plan however was always to work for her teammate Senff for GC. "If Theresa is good tomorrow, she is a very good climber," added De Goede. Normally I would be helping her. I'll do my best tomorrow and we'll see." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by CJ Farquharson/WomensCycling.net
