Stage 6 - March 13: S.Benedetto Del Tronto Torricella Sicura, 182 km
Bertagnolli gets it
Petacchi foiled, but happy with form

It was almost a bunch sprint to finish the sixth stage between San Benedetto del Tronto and Torricella Sicura, but not quite. Leonardo Bertagnolli (Cofidis) attacked with 800 metres to go to anticipate the rest of the medium sized pack and win the stage by a handy margin over Alessandro Petacchi (Milram) and Ricardo Ricco (Saunier Duval). It was the Cofidis man's second win this season after the Tour du Haut Var.
Despite another second place, Alessandro Petacchi declared himself relatively content. "I am satisfied with my form, even if I am sorry not to have won today," said Petacchi. "I had not started this morning with the intention to win the stage, but during the race I have realized that I felt very good. Unfortunately, Bertagnolli jumped and he anticipated us."
The stage, which had been run on an easier parcours than planned because of bad weather conditions, presented few problems for Thomas Dekker and his Rabobank team to defend the red and yellow leader's jersey. Dekker finished 15th in the stage and lost no time to any of his rivals, and will likely keep the lead all the way to tomorrow's finish in San Benedetto del Tronto.

Although the stage was lengthened to 179 km from 164 km, the organisers made it significantly easier because of snow on the difficult climb to San Giacomo (1105m). The stage left San Benedetto del Tronto as planned, travelling 106 km to Torricella Sicura. But instead of continuing onto the summit of San Giacomo, the riders did five laps of a 14 km circuit in Torricella Sicura, with a 130m climb each lap.
181 riders started in San Benedetto at 11:30, with the exception of Australian Simon Gerrans (AG2R), who is heading home to prepare for the Commonwealth Games. Victor Hugo Pena (Phonak) made the first attack after 17 km, joined by Luis Perez (Cofidis), but the pair was caught 3 km later. Amael Moinard (Cofidis) crashed, without damaging himself too much, and rejoined the bunch. The peloton averaged 36.9 km/h in a nervous first hour.
After 38 km, a group of 13 riders including Philippe Gilbert (FDJ), Luca Paolini (Liquigas) and Stijn Devolder (Discovery) attacked, but Rabobank pulled them back, again after only 3 km. Basso and Van Petegem punctured, but lost little time and got back on. After 46 km, a more fruitful breakaway started with Mauro Facci (Barloworld), Fortunato Baliani (Ceramica Panaria), Francesco Bellotti (Credit Agricole), Frederic Guesdon and Cyrille Monnerais (Française des Jeux), and Michele Scarponi (Liberty). It had gained half a minute in four kilometres until Facci, Monnerais and Scarponi crashed and were reabsorbed by the peloton.

Alessandro Spezialetti (Liquigas) chased the remaining leaders together with Giuseppe Muraglia (LPR), catching them after 63 km. The peloton was one minute behind the break at the sprint in Villa Vomano (km 71), where Spezialetti won ahead of Baliani, Muraglia, Bellotti and Guesdon. The average after two hours had lifted to 38.15 km/h.
Rabobank lost one when Thorwald Veneberg crashed after 84 km, abandoning the race. But that didn't give the leaders any more of an advantage, and the well drilled orange train kept the gap to between a minute and a minute and a half until the first passage of the finish line in Torricella Sicura (km 106). On the second lap of the circuit, the one-time breakaway member Mauro Facci attacked again, this time with Alexandre Efimkin (Barloworld). The pair were 43 seconds behind the leaders at the first mountain sprint at km 135, won by Baliani ahead of Bellotti, Muraglia and Guesdon. Spezialetti was dropped.
Towards the end of lap three (km 147), Facci and Efimkin made contact with the four leaders. But behind them, the bunch was quite active with an attack coming from Angel Vicioso (Liberty), Franco Pellizotti (Liquigas), Ignacio Gutierrez (Phonak), and Vladimir Efimkin (Caisse d'Epargne). They were just 33 seconds behind Alexandre Efimkin and the rest at the end of the lap, with the peloton at 47 seconds.

On lap four, the 10 in front reorganised themselves, with the peloton getting ever closer. Vicioso, Pellizotti, Vladimir Efimkin and Gutierrez Cataluna survived as the rest were caught, while David Lopez (Euskaltel) bridged up to form five. On the second mountain sprint (km 164), it was Efimkin ahead of Lopez, Gutierrez, Vicioso and Pellizotti, with Serguei Ivanov attacking out of the peloton to try to close the 14 second gap.
Ivanov was caught on the last lap but the break was doomed anyway: it was gruppo compatto with 6 km to go. George Hincapie (Discovery) punctured at a bad time, but managed to return to the front bunch in time. Haselbacher and Gentili attacked in the closing kilometres, without success. But then Bertagnolli flew the coop at 800m to go, taking advantage of the lack of a big lead out train to win the stage by 10 metres from Petacchi and Ricco. 36 riders finished in the front group.
Tomorrow, the final stage in San Benedetto should suit the sprinters, and present Thomas Dekker with no difficulties.
