58th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré - PTFrance, June 4-11, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - June 10: Briançon - La Toussuire, 169 kmIban Mayo is back in businessBy Jean-François Quénet in La Toussuire Iban Mayo is definitely back at the top of world cycling. The day after finishing second in Briançon behind French surprise Ludovic Turpin, who broke his femur today on the descent of the Col du Mollard and will not ride the Tour de France for AG2R, the Basque climber has won the gruelling stage in La Toussuire, where Levi Leipheimer had no problem keeping the yellow jersey with one day to go. Denis Menchov is no longer his runner up, since he also crashed in the same descent as Turpin and got dropped on the final climb. "I've thought I'd never come back," a relieved Mayo said after his win. "I've spent two years without a win. Once it was because of a problem with a shoulder that stopped me from racing for a long time. Then I decided to prepare only for the Tour de France, but I got a sore knee as well as back problems and I never reached my level on time." It looked like the same Mayo when he climbed the Mont Ventoux ten minutes behind Leipheimer. "I wasn't on a good day. As soon as the climb became hard, I felt very weak, with no strength. I think I suffered in the heat. So I decided to save myself for another stage. Yesterday, I felt strong again but my mind wasn't following my legs. I got the necessary confidence though, and today I had both." Had the Spanish riders read the French press, who suggested that the arrest of Dr Fuentes and Manolo Saiz might have changed the Spaniards' performances? They didn't look as flamboyant as in the previous years in the Alps, until four of them gathered on the col de la Croix-de-Fer: Alejandro Valverde and David Arroyo (Caisse d'Épargne), Oscar Sevilla (T-Mobile) and Mayo. "I was afraid of Valverde and Sevilla," Mayo explained. "I knew they wanted to win but maybe Valverde was working more for the overall classification because that gives him points for the UCI Pro Tour? If I got to sprint against him, it would have been difficult for me. As for myself, I gave it all for the stage win. During the 500 last meters, when I was alone, I was very emotional. I've thought of all the times when I didn't see the light. I've made so many sacrifices to come back. It's a fabulous feeling to be a winner again." We might see the Basque climber in action at the Tour de France like in 2003 when he won on L'Alpe d'Huez. "But I don't have any concrete objective for the Tour at this stage," he said. "My ambition is big, but I'm not able yet to say what I can do. I'll see day after day. I've changed nothing in my preparation. I just don't have physical problems anymore. Thanks to some massages, my back doesn't hurt anymore." Confidence is also a part of Leipheimer's regime. The American could say with no arrogance at all: "Today's stage turned out perfectly. I had the feeling I'd be good today, and I was. I didn't suffer at all. I just followed the wheels of the strongest climbers: (Leonardo) Piepoli, (José) Azevedo, (Christophe) Moreau… Tactically, it was very easy for me." Leipheimer saw Menchov's crash in the downhill of col du Mollard. "There was a lot of gravel," he described. "It was a very dangerous descent. His front wheel washed away. I didn't think his condition was bad. I was concentrated on not crashing myself." Menchov came across to the yellow jersey group but couldn't follow the speed on the final climb to La Toussuire, where Ivan Basso arrived as well, while training on the road that will be used by the Tour de France, a few hours before the riders of the Dauphiné. Menchov lost almost four minutes on Leipheimer but didn't look too worried when he crossed the line. Consequently, Moreau took his second place on gc, and the true revelation of the Dauphiné is now young Austrian Bernhard Kohl, who came 5th in La Toussuire. The former Rabobank TT3 rider now with T-Mobile was known as a climber since he won the Tour of the Pyrenees in the lower category of 2.2 races. He's now a huge prospect for the future. "I would love to win this race," Leipheimer concluded. "It's not over yet. There is another difficult stage before the finish, not as difficult as today's though. Have you seen what the Dauphiné was about today? A bike race cannot be any harder, beautiful and challenging than that! I've enjoyed so much to ride well in a day like that, thinking about the rich history of this event." How it unfoldedStage 2 winner Philippe Gilbert (Française des Jeux) was the first man in action, as the race started at an extremely fast rhythm. He won the first hot spot sprint ahead of Egoi Martinez (Discovery Channel) and Carlos Barredo (Würth) at km 11. It wouldn't slow down until the top of the Galibier. On that main climb of the day, Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Épargne) showed his big ambitions for the day. He broke clear with his teammate David Arroyo, and also Marco Pinotti (Saunier Duval), Remmert Wielinga (Quick Step), José Luis Arrieta and Stéphane Goubert (Ag2r), Oscar Sevilla (T-Mobile) and Chris Horner (Davitamon-Lotto). The major trio of the race, composed of yellow jersey Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner), Denis Menchov (Rabobank) and Christophe Moreau (Ag2r), plus Ryder Hesjedal (Phonak) came across in the last kilometre of the Galibier, where king of the mountains Moreau passed in first position ahead of Menchov, Leipheimer and Arroyo. Moreau continued solo in the downhill of the Galibier with a lead of 20 seconds. But the bunch was back together in the Maurienne valley. More than 60 riders composed the front group at the bottom of the col de Glandon. Half way through that climb, Wielinga took off again, later Arroyo was more convincing in doing so as well. The Spaniard had 50 seconds lead at the top. He was reinforced in the col de la Croix-de-Fer by his teammate Valverde, again, Sevilla again, and Iban Mayo (Euskaltel). They passed the top with 1'20 advantage on the yellow jersey group. Their lead was the same at the top of the col du Mollard (km 133.5), where Moreau went very fast in the descent again, at a speed that caused Menchov to take risks. The Russian crashed, came across but lost contact in the first part of the final climb to La Toussuire, where Arroyo got dropped by his three companions. Sevilla also couldn't follow Mayo and Valverde with 10km to go. At the 5km mark, Mayo dropped Valverde and went on his way to his first win since two years. Crossing the line in 3rd position, Moreau became the new runner up behind a solid leader Leipheimer.
