58th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré - PTFrance, June 4-11, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Stage 7 - June 11: Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne - Grenoble, 131 kmThunder God takes final stage, Leipheimer wins the whole thingBy Jean-François Quénet in Grenoble In his lead up to the Tour de France, last year's green jersey Thor Hushovd wanted a stage win in the Dauphiné. He tried a lot, even in the mountains, but had to wait for the final stage to Grenoble to make it a reality. For Levi Leipheimer, who decided to give it all in a total opposite pre-Tour de France tactic as the one chosen by the very quiet Floyd Landis, Alexandre Vinokourov and Yaroslav Popovych, the overall victory is a big step in his career. He's the fourth American to win the Dauphiné after Greg LeMond (1983), Tyler Hamilton (2000) and Lance Armstrong (2002 and 2003). "When I first got into cycling, LeMond was winning the Tour de France and I always heard about the Dauphiné," the Californian explained. "I've always thought this was one of the best races in the calendar. When Tyler won it, I was on the same team and I thought I could win it one day." The Dauphiné is Leipheimer's second major stage race win after he claimed the Tour of Germany last year. "Finishing third in the Vuelta (2002) was a breakthrough for me but I prefer to win something." He was obviously frustrated that he couldn't keep the yellow jersey in the Dauphiné last year. "I definitely should have won it," he admitted. "But this race is very difficult to control as a team. What we've done this week shows a lot about Gerolsteiner and myself. I feel very happy. The guys have done three days of hard work. Sometimes people are afraid of doing it but this gives confidence for the future." It hasn't been just a dream though. "My week started pretty badly. In the prologue my stem came loose and I had to race sideways. The next day I had a silly crash. A motorbike went over my back from behind. I was sore then. Fortunately things started to turn around for me. More than anything, I'm very proud to win this race. It was so challenging, so difficult with a hard time trial, a mountain top finish in the Mont Ventoux and a real high mountain alpine stage." Aged 33, Leipheimer could have turned into a different rider now that Armstrong's days are over. "It will be a different Tour de France," he reckoned. "Because of no favourite like Armstrong, I'll look for opportunities to attack. I'm prepared to take more risks, but it doesn't mean you do stupid things, you have to choose wisely." The American also described the last stage of the Dauphiné "like a roller-coaster...The French teams were very strong all week. Today it was very hard and Crédit Agricole was ripping those hills apart." That was confirmed by Hushovd who said: "Even Pietro [Caucchioli] who was well placed on GC did a lot of work for closing the gap. It was a real pleasure to see that. It was strange for me to have the guys chasing Stuart O'Grady down, because he's a good friend of mine and he's been on my team for such a long time, but we had to race as we said in the morning: let a breakaway of three riders or so go and then ride behind them. But at the end, I had no more teammates. It's a team victory anyway." Left alone in the streets of Grenoble, the Norwegian looked at his rivals. "I chose Philippe Gilbert's wheel because I saw he was going to try something, and Sébastien Joly led him out. Then Samuel Dumoulin attacked but from too far I think. This was my goal to win a stage in the Dauphiné. The race ended up better than it started. I got no chance to sprint for the win in the first two stages because we were the only team working for a sprint finish. Then I passed the mountains really well. I did a nice breakaway onto the col d'Izoard. It's been good training for the Tour de France." Hushovd knows the competition will be tight with Tom Boonen and Robbie McEwen. "I'm just happy to know that I'm in a good shape. McEwen was super at the Tour of Italy and Boonen is now super at the Tour de Suisse, but on a good day I can beat them", the Norwegian concluded. The heat is now on for the Tour de France starting in Strasbourg on July 1st. How it unfoldedSébastien Joly (Française des Jeux) showed his intentions to break clear as soon as the start was given. Cédric Coutouly (Agritubel) and Andy Flickinger (Bouygues Telecom) were the first riders to join him. But there were many attacks before Stuart O'Grady (CSC) found the right timing at km 14. Guido Trenti (Quick Step) and Coutouly, again, caught him but José Luis Arrieta (Ag2r) who went in between couldn't make it. During the first hour, 48.7 kilometres were covered. At the hot spot sprint of Allevard (km 64.5), won by O'Grady, the gap between the three leaders and the bunch was 4'50. On the col du Barioz, with 57km to go, Trenti got dropped and the Gerolsteiner and Crédit Agricole teams of race leader Levi Leipheimer and stage favourite Thor Hushovd paced harder in front of the peloton. Coutouly couldn't follow O'Grady on the col des Mouilles, whose summit was located 39 kilometres before the finish line. Crédit Agricole was riding flat out but the gap stayed around two minutes for a long time. The bunch was reduced to around 60 riders. Among the supposed-to-be race favourites getting dropped were Floyd Landis (Phonak) and Yaroslav Popovych (Discovery Channel). With 24 km to go, the gap went under one minute. O'Grady still had 35 seconds lead at the top of the Côte des Roussets with 19.5 km to go. The Australian kept going on the descent towards Grenoble, but he got caught two kilometres before the line. "The human roc" Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel) tried to go on his own but it ended up in a bunch sprint with Hushovd taking the right wheel of Française des Jeux riders Philippe Gilbert and Sébastien Joly. The Norwegian won the last stage and Leipheimer was finally able to appreciate being the overall winner of the 58th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré.
