58th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré - PTFrance, June 4-11, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - June 5: Annecy - Bourgoin-Jallieu, 207 kmThe sprinters pass their chance onto WegmannBy Jean-François Quénet in Bourgoin-Jallieu The highly expected scenario of a breakaway caught before a bunch sprint didn't happen in Bourgoin-Jallieu, a French town close to Lyon known for its rugby team. It wasn't time for defenders, but attackers took their chance and profited from a hill located 14 kilometres before the finish, escaping and catching Nicolas Inaudi who had ridden solo for 190km. Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner) proved himself to be the fastest of the four man group ahead of Thomas Voeckler (Bouygues). There was the notable presence of Tour de France challenger Francisco Mancebo (AG2R) in that break despite a crash earlier on. "We worked together very well," Wegmann explained. "I knew Voeckler was the fast guy, I had to watch him. He was on my wheel for the last 200 meters but he couldn't pass me." This wasn't exactly a planned victory for the 26 year-old German. "I had a five week break after the Henninger Turm," he said. "It was just training since. So I didn't know how my condition was. But I was feeling good yesterday (he finished 73rd in the prologue - ed.) and also today at the beginning of the stage." Two years ago, Wegmann was the king of the mountain at the Giro d'Italia. Last year, he rode the Tour de Suisse. "I chose to do the Dauphiné this time because the Tour de Suisse is closer to the Tour de France and that was too hard for me," he declared. "I also like the Dauphiné because some climbs are the same as at the Tour de France. Today, I'm sure that it was a good choice to come here." There aren't many sprinters at the Dauphiné, they know this race is more designed for climbers. That's why Crédit Agricole didn't get much help in the day-long chase. "Our team did a superb job though, but we didn't have enough guys in the finale when the group went away," a disappointed Thor Hushovd said. Quick Step gave a hand but too late. The côte de Rapoux disturbed the usual work of the trains. However, Wegmann's ambitions don't change very much, although he now leads the race. "Maybe tomorrow I can keep the jersey, but the 43km time trial on Wednesday will be too hard for me. I'll take it day by day. I don't know how I can go in the long climbs. At the Tour de France, I hope to win a stage one day like my training partner Georg Totschnig did last year, but for GC, we'll only work for Levi Leipheimer." Will it be another day for attackers in stage 2 of the Dauphiné finishing in St-Galmier? Or will the sprinters complete their duty? Hushovd is confident that he will have another option of winning a stage. How it unfoldedAt km 2, Nicolas Inaudi (Cofidis) attacked and there was no reaction from the peloton. The Frenchman was extremely motivated, racing on his home soil. His advantage grew out to 18'10 at km 75, where Crédit Agricole started pacing in front of the bunch. With 80km to go, CSC, the team of race leader David Zabriskie, gave the French squad a hand. At km 97.5, a crash involved Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner), Francisco Mancebo (AG2R), Chris Horner (Davitamon-Lotto), Filippo Pozzato (Quick Step) and Andreï Grivko (Milram). Leipheimer's bike was totally smashed in a collision with a motorbike but the American cyclist was fine. With 30km to go, Inaudi's lead was only 4'30. Thor Hushovd was clearly thinking of winning the stage and scoring points and time bonuses for both yellow and green jerseys. He ran twice second at hot spot sprints behind Inaudi. At the bottom of the côte de Rapoux (km 193), the first attack was launched by Kurt-Asle Arvesen (CSC), Manuel Quinziato and Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas), but they were countered by Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner), Mancebo (AG2R), Egoï Martinez (Discovery Channel) and Thomas Voeckler (Bouygues Telecom). Inaudi got caught one kilometre before the top of the hill, where Voeckler secured the polka dot jersey for himself. The four men had 40 seconds advantage with 8km to go when Crédit Agricole got some help from Quick Step, but it was too late to bridge the gap. Wegmann won the sprint ahead of Voeckler and became the new leader of the Dauphiné. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Luc Claessen/www.ctm-images.com
