21st Tour de Beauce - 2.2Canada, June 13-18, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - June 17: Québec, 125 kmQuébec City parcours the center of controversyBritish champion wins field sprintBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Ville de Québec The fifth stage of the Tour de Beauce, a circuit race in the downtown of Québec's provincial capital city, was supposed to be a highlight of the tour, since this would be the largest population of any city in the race. But this fact might have been the center of today's problem as a car on the course swerved right into the front of the peloton, causing former Canadian champion Mark Walters (Navigators Insurance) to crash and the field to stop racing. After all was sorted and some logistics changed, a shortened stage was highlighted by a fast downhill sprint, won by British road champion Russel Downing (DFL - Cyclingnews - Litespeed). "They had really strung it out on the climb," said Downing. "I just rode within myself on the steep section, then put it in my big ring on the easier part to catch back on. I started my sprint at like 400 meters! I was just sitting at the back down the final kilometer and David [Harrigan] said to have a go. So we went right and there was nothing, so we went left and caught the yellow jersey and leaders. They all looked at us, probably thinking it was too early to start a sprint." This win certainly adds to Downing's confidence as he prepares to defend his national championship next week. "Definitely! My form's been there the last few weeks. I was feeling good in the criterium last night, I was just outnumbered." The remnants of a tired peloton followed in, with all of the significant players safely tucked inside the lead group, including race leader Valeriy Kobzarenko (Navigators Insurance) and second place Danny Pate (TIAA-CREF). "I felt confident all day and we were getting good information, so [controlling] was not a problem," explained Kobzarenko. "The break went which made it easier to control things. With three laps to go it got harder when Tecos went to the front and Pate tried an attack, and it's been hard after four days. In the last sprint we had Sergey up there to try to take some points -- but Pate was a little back." The parcoursWhile it was exciting to have an urban setting for the race after four days of rural backdrops, the two-way road section of the race between the two dog bone-shaped ends was the big worry. The four lane city avenue was divided into three equal lanes, divided only by pylons. The middle lane was the outgoing section of the course, the left lane was the incoming and the right lane was for public traffic. Now any racer will tell you that orange pylons are hardly a deterrent -- and since the width of the course with the pylons was so narrow, the temptation to ride outside was even more. However, the first two laps were without incident as the peloton climbed the first lap up the Cote de Gilmore climb, a steep 350 meter section of 14 percent followed by another 500 meters of 6 percent pitches. A break of six riders had gone up the road on the second lap with no dangerous riders. A collective sigh was breathed by all as the peloton would now be controlled by the Navigators Insurance team. On the way out the third time, the peloton still navigated the narrow center section of the course without incident. But turning off this on the way to the descent the road narrows more. Here one lane is for the race and the other is for vehicle traffic. A car had pulled into this lane and was just in front of the peloton when it suddenly swerved across the pylons, cutting off the field. "We had just finally gotten a non-dangerous break up the road which was what we wanted to do," said Glen Chadwick (Navigators Insurance). "Then the shit hit the fan. This car had pulled onto the road, in the traffic lane. But then it drove between the witches hats [pylons] -- it just suddenly turned. I was able to swerve, lock up my brakes and started yelling at her -- which made her just slow. Mark then clipped my wheel and hit the deck." Walters landed on his backside hard. In a display of sportsmanship, the entire field stopped. "When I was on the ground a bunch of riders yelled to stop, which was just great." Walters was able to continue and finish, but is feeling the effects of the crash. "I have some soreness, and some movements really hurt while others don't," he said. "I was trying to put on my shoes after the race and couldn't lean over without holding on to something." At this point the race stopped for more than 45 minutes while the organisers and teams decided what to do. "The managers had an impromptu manager's meeting right there," said Chadwick. "There was a sort-of 'gentlemen's agreement' to let the break go again and let them have it until the last lap." In addition, the race organisers decided to remove the center pylons that divided the two race lanes, allowing the field to have a wider section. However, the vehicle traffic lanes remained, with organisers citing city traffic flow demands. The race then rolled completely neutral back to the start to finalize the plans. Another 30 minutes went by with the six rider break sitting on the start line while the field was sitting 25 meters behind. Walters went up to the break and explained to them the plan. Finally the race resumed with the officials starting the field forty seconds behind the break -- the last gap before the incident. The breakThe break contained yesterday's winner Richard Faltus (Sparkasse), Ian McGreggor (TIAA-CREF) Tony Mann (FRF Couriers-Caravello), Svein Tuft (Symmetrics), Andrew Randell (Symmetrics), Michael Ford (SouthAustralia.com-AIS), Éric Boily (Volkswagen Trek) and Jairo Hernandez (Colombian National). Hernandez was the most dangerous to the overall, but still more than four minutes down, so Navigators was willing to let the break go to keep the race safe. Within the break, the riders agreed to let Hernadez claim all of the KOM points in an effort to motivate cooperation. "We all agreed to give the Colombian the KOMs," said Tuft. "But he was rather spastic, I don't think he believed us. He ended up just making it hard for himself." Back in the field, the lack of communication was also evident among the other non-English speaking teams, as Team Sparkasse and Tecos-Trek drove the pace earlier than planned. "We definitely wanted to see if Ian could stay away," said Pate regarding the break. "I told him it was a good break and that he didn't need to push it -- to sit-on even." "But at one point the Tecos team had Navigators on the ropes, they put the screws to everybody. If they could have done it another half-lap it would have blown the field apart!" This is when Pate made a small attempt to bridge across, awakening the field. However, the Navigators Insurance team managed to keep everything together, but the speed increase shredded the field to bits, leaving only about twenty five riders in the main peloton. The catch of the break was timed perfectly, the final time up the Cote de Glimore climb. "I attacked at the base of the climb," said MacGregor. "When I was caught I ended up pulling, trying to give Danny a shot at the time bonus." The restarting of the break after sitting for more than 30 minutes did not help the break's chances of succeeding. "It was hard to get going. And it gave the Navigators a chance to really talk things over, but the safety of the riders is the most important."
The incidents of today will be fresh on the Canadian Cycling Association as this exact parcours will be used for the national championships in two weeks. "Maybe they can do a better job securing the the roads -- or having it as a rolling enclosure," said Walters. "We only come down the road for line two or three minutes at a time. A lot of guys wanted to stop the race all together -- they were pretty freaked out." The final stage of the Tour de Beauce is another circuit race, but is the less urban setting of Saint-Georges. Danny Pate still trails Valeriy Kobzarenko by only sixteen seconds, so the racing is certainly not finished. "I expect more of the same tomorrow," said Pate. "Hard racing."
