Navigators take stage and time from Parinussa
Lagutin wins climb to Mount-Megantic

The Navigators Insurance team had a lot of work to do today to make up for yesterday's shortcomings. "We made a few mistakes yesterday which was frustrating," said Sergey Lagutin. "But everything was under control today, all day." All day meant all the way to the top of Mount-Megantic, the highest paved road in Quebec -- which is where Lagutin road alone to take the stage win and all but thirty-seven seconds from race leader Stefan Parinussa (Team Sparkasse).
"I attacked in the last two kilometers because I saw everyone was tired," Lagutin explained. "I was going to wait for Valeriy but I saw he was tired so I went around him." Lagutin is referring to teammate and former race leader Valeriy Kobzarenko who attacked 70 kilometers into the stage, just under half-way to the finish. Teammate Glen Chadwick bridged up to Kobzarenko and the two were off the front until the final slopes of Mount-Megantic.
"We knew we had to be aggressive today," said Chadwick. "After the second KOM Valeriy attacked and got away. I rode as hard as I could to get Valeriy's wheel. That made the Germans work all day."
Team Sparkasse had been riding on the front up until that point, but the speed was significantly increased with these two threats to the overall. "Navigators had four dangerous riders and it is just not possible to watch them all." Race leader Stefan Parinussa used all of his teammates to keep the break at two minutes the rest of the way, with TIAA-CREF joining in for the last 10 kilometers to the base of the climb. "The final climb was really hard. I had to go full just to survive. I was alone for the last ten kilometers today," said Parinussa.

"We went to the front when there was only one German guy left," said Danny Pate who moves up to fourth on the overall, just over one minute behind Parinussa. "We weren't going to help them any more than we had to. There was quite a bit of crosswind today, but the final climb was a dead head wind."
"I had a lot of teammates around me starting the final climb, then it suddenly was twenty little puny guys around me!" said Pate, referring to the many good climbers from the Mexican Tecos-Trek and Colombian National teams. "It was hard because when you got on the front the headwind made the climb steeper."
From there Lagutin put in his attack and rode the rest of the way alone. Kobzarenko managed to hang on for third behind Gregorio Ladino Vega (Tecos-Trek). Kobzarenko also retains his second place on the overall, and cut Parinussa's lead to just thirty-two seconds.
Also finishing with the yellow jersey group was British national champion Russel Downing (DFL-Cyclingnews-Litespeed), who is hoping this race will prepare him to defend his jersey next week. "Oh, just a normal day at the office! People kept losing wheels and then you were in the wind. But I was able to get back to the group with the yellow jersey. I'm looking to get some good form for when I go back to defend my national championship next week."

Sergey Lagutin also increased his lead on the KOM jersey with the mountain-top win, while the rest of the classification changed significantly. Colombian Jarley Colorado Hernandez jumps to second place, followed by Danny Pate (TIAA-CREF).
Tomorrow begins with a short and flat 15km time trial in Saint-Georges, followed by an evening criterium. However, the criterium does not count towards the overall. Navigators director Ed Beamon is cautiously optimistic about his team's chances of taking the overall away from Parinussa. "The main objective was the be aggressive from the gun. Chadwick really rode well today. I was thinking of putting [Ciarian] Power with him, but it turned out to be a good opportunity for Valeriy. It forced the Germans to ride very hard all day, and with the wind it wasn't easy."
"I feel that the circuit races here are some of the hardest. It is really windy in Quebec City. And we are down one, maybe two riders with O'Loughlin getting dropped from the caravan by the medical car, and I still haven't seen Grajales. He was not feeling well this morning."

On the other side, Team Sparkasse's director Erik Weispfennig is hopeful... hopeful that they can find some time trial equipment in time for tomorrow's stage. "We still have a small lead -- I don't know how much. We do not have our time trial equipment here, but maybe we can borrow some?"
