Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 15-23, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - July 19: Guide - Xining, 114kmTjallingii holds on over torturous 40km climbBy Mark Gunter in Gui De Maarten Tjallingii (Skil-Shimano) held onto the yellow jersey after a difficult stage on Sunday; he struggled on the climb but retained his lead and has 42 seconds over Hossein Askari (Giant Asia). Maarten has a real chance of winning the tour with four stages to go. Wednesday’s stage, which layed out like a perfect triangle in the race profile, reached a high point of 3820m with 40km uphill and 50km downhill. Starting in Gui de, the riders crossed the famous Yellow River and passed through 20km of undulating terrain surrounded by imposing bare hillsides that look like something out of a western movie before starting their climb. The climb of the day was the opposite direction to the way the riders finished yesterday. From 2200m to 3820m it is one of the largest climbs in the tour. Skill-Shimano were on the front for the first 20km, but it was Alexey Bauer (Omnibike Dynamo Moscow) who instigated the first attack at the base of the climb, and was joined by nine others including eventual winner David McCann (Giant Asia). The Yellow Jersey wearer struggled and was leading the third group to try and stay in touch before the descent. As the riders elevated the temperature dropped and the top was covered in thick fog. It was Oscar Pintor (Relax-Gam) and Alexandr Dyachenko (Capek) who would crest the summit first, and start the tricky descent on a slippery surface. The pace was on, and the riders reached 85km/h as they headed to the finish in Xining. A group of sixteen riders joined forces to battle it out as Pintor and Dyachenko were reeled in. With 20km to go David McCann (Giant Asia) and Thomas Rabou (Marco Polo) attempted a break. They were successful. But in cycling there can be only one winner and David McCann (Giant Asia) beat Thomas Rabou (Marco Polo) by three seconds with a large group finishing a further six second down. Tomorrows stage is a relatively flat one compared to the last few days, but with the undulations it will be anything but and easy stage.
