Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 15-23, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - July 18: Qinghai Lake Hotel - Gui De, 164kmTjallingii takes it back for SkilBy Mark Gunter in Gui De Maarten Tjallingii (Skil-Shimano) has reclaimed the leader's yellow jersey for his team, after placing second in the fourth stage of the Tour of Qinghai lake behind Daniel Lloyd (Giant Asia). The pair had attacked in the final 40 km of the stage, and had almost a 50 second gap on the chasing bunch, which contained race leader Hossein Askari. How it unfoldedIt was wet windy and cold as the riders left Qinghai Lake and headed for Gui De. The stage was 163.6 km in length and was the most scenic of the tour so far. It included a climb that peaked at 3880m and is the highest point in the tour. As the riders left Qinghai Lake, it was 12 degrees, with blustery wind and on and off rain. The yellow jersey team Giant Asia took to the front and the only thing of real interest was a solo break by Rhys Pollock (Marco Polo), but he could only manage a break of 1 minute and 5 seconds before retreating back to the bunch. The first sprint at 47.9 km was won by Antonio Quadranti (Naturino-Sapore Di Mare). The rain had stopped by then, but the new challenge was the fog. But as the riders reached the base of the climb at 70km the skies cleared up somewhat. Maybe the gods had done this to show off the magnificent surroundings they were about to encounter. Giant Asia was still at the front of the pack, when yellow jersey wearer Hossein Askari went to the front and pushed the pace, causing all sorts of trouble for the lesser riders. Hossein Askari stayed in the leading group of five riders as they reached the high point of the tour at 3880m. No time to look at the view though, as a larger bunch was just behind them, and the descent towards Gui De was on. Nearly 40km of smooth winding road down onto the valley, the five leaders were caught by the second group, and as they rode through the barren, eroded landscape at the base, Maarten Tjallingii (Skil-Shimano) launched a solo attack, soon to be followed by Alexander Dyachenko (Capec) and Daniel Lloyd (Giant Asia). Alexander Dyachenko (Capec) punctured, so it was up to Tjallingii and Lloyd to fight it out on the long straight to the finish line. In front of a massive crowd Daniel Lloyd (Giant Asia) took a win on a tough, if not scenic day. Tjallingii is now in the yellow, 41 seconds in front of Hossein Askari (Giant Asia), and with five more challenging days ahead it is set to be an exciting race.
