Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 15-23, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - July 17: Xihaizhen - Qinghai Lake Hotel, 147kmNew leader after Weissinger misses splitBy Mark Gunter in Qinghai Lake Hossein Askari (Giant Asia Racing) is the new leader of the Tour of Qinghai Lake after Rene Weissinger (Skil-Shimano) missed making the front group in the third stage. The stage finished in a 17 rider group sprint, with Denys Kostyuk (Intel-Action) taking the honours from Eduard Vorganov (Omnibike Dynamo Moscow) and Nacor Burgos Rojo (Relax-Gam). Weissinger finished 34th, 47 seconds behind, and lost the jersey to Hoessein Askari, who was 12th. Once again the riders woke to a cool cloudy day, which made for perfect riding conditions. The wind had subsided and the first major climb of the tour was faced in front of them. The 147 km stage from Xihaizhen to Qinghai Lake Hotel included the 3435m Sun and Moon Mountain, and then went onto finish where the tour had started - on the shores of Qinghai Lake. The first sprint of the day was 12.8 km into the stage and FRF Couriers-Caravello were on the front pushing the pace, but everyone sprinted early as they all thought a banner across the road was the sprint line, but it was in fact a further 200m down the road. A group of 18 riders made a four-minute break on the yellow jersey group but by the base of the climb at 52km, everyone was together. Several attempts to form a breakaway group happened on the lower slopes, but it wasn’t until Alexander Dyachenko (Capec) and Daniel Spence (South Africa) attacked at around 10km into the 30km climb that anything sustained. Krzysztof Miara (Intel-Action) tried to join them but was stuck in no-man's land until slowing down to join the rest. The field split into several groups but Dyachenko (Capec) and Daniel Spence (South Africa) reached the summit together. But with their energy supplies sapped on the climb, they were soon caught by the next group. On the front Darren Lill (South Africa) and Kenny Van Hummel (Skill-Shimano) had a go with 25km to go, but couldn’t hold on and it came down to a group sprint with Denys Kostyuk (Intel-Action) taking a comfortable win. Hossein Askari (Giant Asia Racing) is now the new yellow jersey wearer with Rene Weissinger finishing in the second group.
