Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 15-23, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - July 16: Bird Island - Xihaizhen, 152kmWeissinger does it againBy Mark Gunter in Xihaizhen Race leader Rene Weissinger (Skil-Shimano) has taken his second successive stage win in the Tour of Qinghai Lake, beating Cody Stevenson (FRF/Caravello) and Daryl Impey (South Africa) in a bunch sprint. Weissinger therefore increased his lead on the general classification to 19 seconds over Hossein Askari (Giant Asia Racing Team). The riders woke to a cool, cloudy morning at Bird Island on the western side of Qinghai Lake were they would begin stage 2 to the City of Xihaizhen, 152.4km away. There was a moderate head wind and the pace was fast, the peloton was once again split into a few groups. Rene Weissinger (Skil-Shimano) was looking comfortable in the lead pack as the field reached the first KOM at 66.75km. On the descent though, he was left behind with a dropped chain. The problem was soon fixed and with help from a teammate he was bought back to the group. Jasper Lenferink (Löwik Meubelen) and Pichot Alexandre (Bouygues Telecom) then made a break and were joined soon after by Alex Pavlov (South Africa). The trio made a sizeable gap in the peloton despite battling the head wind, and at one stage were nearly four minutes up. Once again, the stage was set amongst amazing scenery, especially the second half, which featured perfect rolling hills as far as the eye could see. As the leaders reached the summit of the last category 1 climb of the day (3449m) and with 25 km to go, mainly downhill, they were looking good to battle out the win between the three of them. But with three km to go on the flat into town, they were caught and the peloton came thundering around the last turn and up the 600m straight to the finish. Once again it was Rene Weissinger (Skil-Shimano) who snatched the win in a tight sprint in front of Cody Stevenson (FRF Couriers-Caravello) and Daryl Impey (South Africa). Delighted with his win, Rene said they would continue to try and keep the yellow jersey.
