19th Trust House Classic (Tour of Wellington) - 2.2New Zealand, January 25-29, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 7 - January 29: Petone Criterium, 40 kmHendo caps it off for SubwayRoulston seals overall victoryBy Nick Warren in Petone Former scratch race world champion Greg Henderson (Subway) won the 2006 Tour of Wellington's final stage, after a well-timed lead-out by teammate and overall race victor Hayden Roulston. A tight 1200m long circuit was lined by the biggest crowd of the Tour, including All Black rugby star Tana Umaga. With Roulston 1min 30sec ahead of Gudsell on general classification and just one hour of racing remaining, it would have taken a monumental effort to knock the Subway team leader off his perch. Gudsell instead decided to focus on the sprinter's jersey which was still up for grabs; the top four being separated by just three points. Unfortunately, SouthAustralia.com-AIS decided to make it their target also, after having a fairly lacklustre Tour given the high expectations prior to the race. On four of the five intermediate sprints, the purple jerseyed team from Australia led Wesley Sulzberger out perfectly to grab maximum points, effectively sealing him the green sprinter's jersey. Less than 70 riders started the stage after seven were cut for missing the time limit in the morning's time-trial. In keeping with the two previous criterium stages, race speeds were exceptionally high. Subway tried to control the race as best they could, but often it was a calm-and-collected-looking Roulston himself on the front. Marking the numerous attacks from Dean Windsor (Mercedes Benz-Wellington Star), who was also chasing the sprinter's jersey, and keeping SouthAustralia.com-AIS within reach took their toll on the sandwich chain-sponsored team. Roulston was left with just two teammates as the bunch whittled down to 22 riders at the 15 minutes remaining point. He didn't appear too concerned and during the final two laps was able to tow Henderson to the front, pulling off with 200m to go. Henderson wasn't going to make a mistake and crossed the line half a length clear of Rob McLachlan (Trust House) and Ashley Hutchinson (SouthAustralia.com-AIS). "It's nice to win in front of such a great vocal turnout," Henderson said. "I tried to look after my legs and had a great lead-out from Hayden." Winner of three stages and the yellow jersey Roulston was extremely happy with adding the Tour of Wellington to his palmares. "I set it as a goal a short while ago and to achieve it is one big thing," he explained. "My team rode like legends all week, but hats off to Tim (Gudsell) and Samsung (NZ National Team), they rode a great race and deserve a week off. "I was really tired after flying in from Los Angeles the night before the race started but once the form came, I felt great. I'm still improving and am confident I'll be right for the Commonwealth Games." Second-placed Gudsell took home the under-23 jersey: "In a few weeks time we are all on the same team, but this week the racing was all on. I'm happy to hold on to second place. Hayden is a classy rider and he rode a great race." Sulzberger said it was his team's goal to try and scoop the sprinter's green jersey. "We set out with the goal of seeing how I went in the first few sprints and maybe keep going for the jersey," he said. "My team helped a lot and that's how it happened." Wellington plays host to the women's three-day beginning March 1st and women's world cup round on March 5th. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Craig Wadsworth
