Roulston shines in the fog

Gusting winds, light showers and fog, which closed Wellington's airport overnight, greeted riders for the Tour of Wellington's sixth stage. Contrasting the previous day's almost unbearable heat, the weather didn't halt Hayden Roulston (Subway) making it two wins from two stages.
The short, dead-flat 12km time-trial around Scorching Bay in Wellington, exposed the remaining 70 riders to coastal crosswinds and sea spray. Roulston, however, appeared undeterred and belted round the course in a time of 14min 32sec with an average speed of 49km/h.
He beat second-placed Jeremy Vennell (Subway) by 29 seconds and Gordon McCauley, who was third at 34 seconds.
Second on general classification at the start of the day, Evan Oliphant, was almost caught by Roulston and finished with 15min 32sec, moving him down in the overall rankings to third. Tim Gudsell, holder of the yellow jersey for the Tour's first four days, recorded 15min 9sec, good enough for fourth place and moving him up to second overall, still 1min 30sec behind Roulston.
Roulston's victory still courted some minor controversy as he was castigated by officials for crossing the centre-line on the twisting Shelly Bay Road. Although no time penalty was imposed, Roulston along with Scotland's James McCallum copped a monetary fine.
"I've felt better these last couple of days," the team Subway leader said. "I knew I was in good form today and I'm definitely happy with the result."
With just one criterium stage remaining of the Tour, Roulston's victory is almost sealed, but he was not counting his chickens. "Everything could go wrong, it's not over until we cross the finish line," he continued. "My team will try and control the race and I have total confidence in them. They asked me before the race whether I thought I could win it and I told them I could. We came here with the aim of winning and it's been a great experience."
Third-placed McCauley said his team would still try to snatch victory. "It's not over till the last second of the race and we'll be throwing everything at it to win."
