19th Trust House Classic (Tour of Wellington) - 2.2New Zealand, January 25-29, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - January 28: Masterton Circuit, 125.3 kmRoulston fires in the heatBy Nick Warren in Masterton In sweltering temperatures, Subway's team leader Hayden Roulston won stage five of the Tour of Wellington, snatching the yellow jersey from fellow Kiwi Tim Gudsell. Roulston started the day in third place, 33 seconds behind Gudsell, but obviously confident it was his race for the taking. His manager asked the lead service van to look after a couple of bottles as "Vennell (Roulston's Subway team-mate, Jeremy) and Roly will be up the road." Early action once again involved Duncan Urquhart (Scottish National Team) who found himself in the first serious break of the day, going clear after 20km. Urquhart, leader of the King of the Mountains competition after spending two previous days in small breakaways, was after more points to seal his polka dot jersey. Second over the first categorised climb gave him an unassailable 16-point lead with just one climb of the Tour remaining. The break was doomed to failure however, as Subway rider Hayden Godfrey refused
to work on the front, and after 75km they were swallowed up by a new 19-strong
group, which included all the major players and had With just 20km remaining, Subway hit the front, and with Vennell setting the pace on the penultimate climb, the vicious Kureaw Hill, Gudsell was in trouble and briefly dropped before his Samsung team-mates Peter Latham and Logan Hutchins towed him back on the descent. Hitting the base of the twisting 9km ascent up Admiral Hill to the finish of the 125km stage, Vennell again went to the front, setting a pace almost as scorching as the 35 degree temperatures. Roulston was sitting tight on his wheel and Gudsell again began to struggle. With 5km remaining he had lost touch along with most of the lead group. Tasmanian Josh Wilson (Infinity Solutions) found the legs to pass the Subway duo, gaining a few seconds lead before Vennell towed Roulston up to him. As planned, Vennell and Roulston were "up the road", Gudsell with no option but to try and limit his losses. The hilltop in sight and just 200m remaining, Wilson tried his luck but Roulston quickly reacted and sprinted clear, finishing with two clear lengths to spare. Vennell came in third. Gudsell was a further 58 seconds behind, but it was enough to lose him the yellow jersey to Roulston. "It all went to plan perfectly," said Roulston. "All hats off to Jeremy, he rode an awesome race. The hill was pretty hard, but it suited me as a larger rider and I had a good team-mate to pace me up the climb," he continued. "I believe I have the strongest team in the race and that it's crucial to be confident in your team," said Roulston. Vennell continued the Subway-fest: "I'm really enjoying riding for this team and it's a privilege to work for such a talented rider like Hayden. The team has so much talent." Gudsell was philosophical about losing his overall lead. "It's disappointing to lose the yellow, but that's the way tour riding goes I guess," he said. "The hill was super tough and I struggled in the heat. I was going through heaps of water bottles." "But Hayden is a classy bike rider and a guy I have lots of respect for." Second-placed Wilson said he had targeted the stage: "I was always going to try and get this one, and I had fresh legs on the climb so I tried to ramp it up but Roulston was too strong in the sprint." Tomorrow's final day features a 12km morning time trial around Wellington's Scorching Bay and an afternoon criterium in Petone.
