19th Trust House Classic (Tour of Wellington) - 2.2New Zealand, January 25-29, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - January 26: Masterton Criterium, 40 kmRoulston enjoys a winBy Nick Warren in Masterton A super-fast circuit and near perfect conditions, that were in total contrast to the previous nights racing in Lower Hutt, saw Hayden Roulston (Subway) claim his first stage of the tour ahead of Scotlands Evan Oliphant and race leader Tim Gudsell (Samsung NZ National Team). Masterton played host to the evening criterium, where wide roads allowed riders maintain high speed despite numerous cornering. Early attacks were closely guarded by Gudsells Samsung NZ team and the pace was furious, taking its toll on the peloton. Riders were being dropped left, right and centre as the field fully strung itself out, sometimes stretching the entire length of a straight. A break of three were allowed some freedom after the first sprint, which were taking place every 10mins. Wesley Sulzberger (SouthAustralia.com-AIS), Jeremy Vennell (Subway) and Dean Winsor (Mercedes Benz-Wellington Star) held a 10 second lead for 20 minutes, but the field was merely playing with them. After the 30 minute sprint, their lead disappeared as some of the big guns went on the attack. Subway, Scotland and SouthAustralia.com-AIS consistently tried to get away from Gudsell and his Samsung team. Two riders finally put clear road between them and the bunch. Evan Oliphant and Miles Olman (SouthAustralia.com-AIS) held a five second gap over the bunch with 15 minutes remaining. A crash by James McCallum (Scotland) five minutes later caused the bunch to shred and five riders bridge the gap to the leaders. McCallum had rolled his tyre and may have injured his collarbone. The seven-strong group contained among others, Roulston, Oliphant, Gudsell, Rob McLachlan (Trust House). With so many top contenders representing the big teams the bunch eased off, letting the break gain a near one-minute lead by the finish. McLachlan tried his luck heading into the final lap, opening a small gap which he held until Roulston unleashed his sprint with 200m to go. Oliphant pipped Gudsell to the finish with Logan Hutchings (Samsung NZ National Team) in fourth. "I didnt enjoy last nights race at all," said Roulston. "But once we established the break I felt really good." Of his Aussie rivals, Roulston highly rates SouthAustralia.com-AIS, saying "they are the number one team pursuit team probably in the world, you cant underestimate them."
