19th Trust House Classic (Tour of Wellington) - 2.2New Zealand, January 25-29, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - January 26: Featherston - Masterton, 117kmShaw blows home to winBy Nick Warren in Masterton A strong tailwind for the last 80km helped Stuart Shaw (Team Trust House) to stay away from a chasing pack and win stage two ahead of his two breakaway companions. The trio, which also included Shaws team-mate Darren Lapthorne and Scottish national team rider Duncan Urquhart, had broken away after just 20km and at one point held a 3min 33sec lead. Riders began the 117km route in Featherston and battled a gusty headwind for nearly 30km before turning around the Southern end of Lake Wairarapa and heading North towards the finish in Masterton. As expected attacks came from the gun, but long, straight roads made it hard for escapees to establish a significant lead. After 20km, as the peloton passed Lake Wairarapa itself, a more twisting and rolling road made it possible for Shaw, Lapthorne and Urquhart slip away. Quickly out of sight, their lead grew steadily and the trio worked well together. At the 29km mark they made the turn North round the lake, their speeds rising at times to 55km/h on flat sections with a hefty tailwind pushing them along. At the beginning of the day, all three were 1min 31sec behind race leader Tim Gudsell who had won the opening stage one criterium in Lower Hutt the night before. By the feed station at 65km, just outside Martinborough, their lead reached a maximum 3min 33sec, technically leaders on the road. Their momentum broken slightly when Lapthorne needed a wheel change for a broken spoke. At this point the peloton were jolted into action. Tim Gudsell put his Samsung-NZ National Team on the front to protect his yellow jersey. They were soon joined by SouthAustralia.com-AIS and the time gap gradually reduced. With just 8km to go, Urquhart took the only King of the Mountains points of the day on the short climb on Pakaraka Road, but the three were obviously tiring and the bunch had closed to within one minute. Working hard right to the finish, the breakaways barely had a chance to play cat-and-mouse. Urquhart, perhaps realising he wasnt going to be able to upset the Aussie duo, led out the sprint, but it was Shaw who moved up the right-hand side and take a comfortable victory. "I didnt expect this today," he said afterwards. "I had a bad crash 3 months ago and its my first race since." "Our team was looking to get into a break today. I didnt really want it to be with just three of us, but thats the way it goes. Once we saw we were getting time on the field, we just put our head down and went for it." Urquhart, who as only King of the Mountains points winner pulled on the climbers jersey, said he was pleased with the days racing: "It was very enjoyable, I was fortunate to get into the right move." A speeding peloton was led in by Brady Gibbons (R+R), 45sec behind the break, thus preserving Gudsells lead. "I was a little worried," Gudsell said, "but I was happy with the way the ended." "Once the gap got out to 3min 30sec we started chasing proper. In the last 30km there were a lot of attacks on me, mainly from the team Subway guys and some others which kept the pace high." Gudsell holds onto his overall lead from Subways Sam Bewley and Stuart Shaw in third at 46sec. Tonghts stage three is a one hour-long criterium around the centre of Masterton.
