8th Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under - 2.HCAustralia, January 17-22, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Video Previous Stage Stage 5 - Sunday, January 22: Adelaide City Council Circuit, 81kmAlby gets another as Gerrans takes overallGerrans wins overall title after super team effortBy Les Clarke in Adelaide After taking his first Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under stage just four days ago, Liberty Seguros' Allan Davis has won his second stage of this year's event in Adelaide this afternoon after out sprinting Robbie McEwen (Davitamon-Lotto). Going into the day with the aim of holding onto teammate Luis Leon Sanchez's lead, Davis laid low in the peloton as an early break rode away for most of the race, only to be caught in the final laps before a bunch gallop concluded this year's Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under. "I did everything I could yesterday for Luis to bridge a gap and basically rode to the finish; I thought about today's stage all the way home yesterday and I'm pretty happy with that," said Davis after the finish. "I stayed on Robbie's wheel the last few laps and I got a good run into the sprint for a change," he added. And it was a masterful sprint from Davis, who held off the likes of McEwen, Hushovd, Renshaw and Kirsipuu to finish the race with a very popular win. And as Davis celebrated with Team Davis [a crew of close family and friends] in the stands, it was Gerrans who took time to soak up the amazing atmosphere of being the first man to win the event after leading from the opening day. "I'm just absolutely rapt. I've had the lead from the first day until today - that's just an incredible feeling!" said Gerrans as he wheeled in after the finish. "My Ag2R-Prevoyance teammates have just ridden an amazing race," he continued, before adding, "they've backed me since the first day, they've protected me on every stage and there's no way I could've done it without them." How it unfoldedStarting the day in sultry conditions, 85 riders signed on for the last stage of this year's Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under, and after yesterday's scorcher several riders were suffering the effects of the intense heat. Speaking to Cyclingnews before the start, UniSA's experienced campaigners Sean Sullivan and Matt Hayman said they were confident of maintaining their lead in the team's classification, a goal the composite squad set themselves after some attacking riding in the opening stages of the tour. And it was UniSA that made the early running, with four men in the break that formed during the opening lap - Hayman, Sullivan, Chris Jongewaard and Paul Crake were joined by Carlos Barredo, Jose Rojas (both Liberty Seguros), Matt Rex (United Water) and Hilton Clarke (Navigators) freed themselves from the peloton before Liquigas' Luca Paolini joined the party on the next lap. The break made their move early, but only two laps later three riders had made their way ahead of the break, with Laszlo Bodrogi (Credit Agricole) sneaking up unannounced to join forces with Sullivan and Paolini and becoming the three riders out front. Hayman was doing his best to bridge the gap to the leading trio, while behind him Barredo, Rex, Crake and Clarke worked amongst each other to make up the gap to the leaders. Joining Hayman, Barredo was able to reach the three leaders with the UniSA's classics specialist to make the leading trio a quintet. They were able to establish a 36-second lead in a short time, and at the start of lap 6 they had extended their lead to 42 seconds. Back in the peloton, Ag2R were once again controlling proceedings in an effort to deliver their man to the line without losing any time, something they were confident of doing at the start of today's stage. By the end of lap 7, the break had increased their lead to 45 seconds, with Navigators' Sergey Lagutin dropping out of the race after suffering the effects of yesterday's incredible heat. Ag2R continued to control the peloton, not working too hard in the intense wind and heat as a thickening blanket of smoke appeared over the course due to a bushfire on the outskirts of Adelaide. This made conditions even tougher for the riders, and it became increasingly unlikely that the break wouldn't succeed in staying away from the peloton - but they kept trying, nevertheless. At the first intermediate sprint, Sean Sullivan took the points, followed by teammate Matt Hayman and Liquigas' Luca Paolini. The pace then dropped as the break's lead hit 33 seconds during lap 9 and the first KOM on lap 10. Cresting Montefire Hill first on lap 10 was Paolini, followed by Hayman and Bodrogi, the five escapees fighting amongst themselves for the mountains points on offer. Davitamon-Lotto's Cadel Evans was experiencing mechanical problems during lap 11, with the break increasing their lead to 49 seconds - but that was all they were allowed to take, as their lead decreased gradually from this point on. At the second intermediate sprint during lap 12, Paolini added to his tally of sprint points as he crossed the line ahead of Hayman and Bodrogi, the break still able to share the spoils with the peloton 35 seconds behind them. Behind the peloton Josh Wilson withdrew with only a handful of kilometres left to run as Sullivan was dropped from the lead group - the peloton's chase was on, and it was taking its toll. Next to leave the break was Lazslo Bodrogi, the heat and wind proving too much for the Hungarian national road champion. With the break whittled down to Barredo, Hayman and Paolini, the peloton smelled blood like a shark on an Aussie beach as the lead fell to 31 seconds before they took out the top three KOM spots on offer during lap 15. Paolini took the 16 points, followed by Barredo and Hayman. Further back in the race Ag2R's Samuel Dumoulin tried his best to wrest the KOM jersey from Cadel Evans with a fourth place at the same KOM point; his efforts were in vain as Evans took fifth at the same point to secure the jersey in this year's tour. Coming into the last two laps it was game over for the break, as the pace of the peloton lifted and sprinters such as McEwen, Davis, Renshaw and Hushovd made their way to the front of the field, waiting for their opportunity to pounce in the closing stages. Aaron Kemps (Liberty Seguros) and Ben Brooks (Navigators) tried their luck during lap 17, but they were quickly swallowed up by the freight train that was the peloton. Going into the final lap McEwen had been brought to the front by his Davitamon-Lotto teammates, the winner of Tuesday's Jacob's Creek Down Under Classic sitting in third wheel coming through the start-finish area. It was then time to light up the race, with Jaan Kirsipuu and Gene Bates joining Renshaw and Hushovd on McEwen's wheel coming into the final straight. McEwen was looking good for the win, pumping the legs and twisting his bike in an effort to stay ahead of Davis, who had become the main challenger as they headed into the final 200 metres of the race. It was McEwen, Davis, McEwen, Davis until Bundaberg's favourite son, Allan Davis, took the win with a perfectly-timed throw across the line, winning by a rim's width from McEwen. After appearing to get boxed in during the final metres of the race, Davis said of the closing stages, "As soon as I saw I had a bit of room there, I knew I had a chance." Speaking of his team's performance in the tour, Davis said, "We're really rapt. We went into the race forgetting about last year and trying to do the best this year - Marino Lejerreta has done an awesome job this last two years; he doesn't put any pressure on us." But the day belonged to Simon Gerrans, the Victorian becoming the first man to lead the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under from start to finish. He said after securing the win, "No one's done it before, so I'm pretty rapt. Full credit to my team - they defended the jersey perfectly every day, and I really can't thank them enough." The win wasn't without some tense moments, with Gerrans admitting he was a little nervous at times. "When I had my team put so much faith in me, and right from the start I would've been really disappointed not to have won just for those guys, so the pressure was definitely on." After a year that included third in a Tour de France stage Gerrans was delighted to win at home, saying, "It's fantastic to win at home. I don't get the chance to race at home, and to do it and win, it...fantastic." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Mark Gunter/www.pbase.com/gunterphotograph
