8th Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under - 2.HCAustralia, January 17-22, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Video Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - Saturday, January 21: Willunga - Willunga, 147kmVan Hout conquers the heat as Gerrans reigns supremeSanchez concedes defeat after massive day in WillungaBy Les Clarke in Willunga Starting and finishing in the sweltering furnace that was Willunga, stage four of the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under was won by Russell Van Hout after an epic all-day breakaway effort. Sitting in a 20-rider break for the day, Van Hout broke free before the KOM at Willunga with teammate Paul Crake and headed for home, taking the win to a delighted hometown audience. "There was no doubt I could get up there first. It was just whether we could make it to the finish, that was all," said Van Hout at the finish. Going into stage 4, all eyes were on the KOM at Willunga as overall leader Simon Gerrans went into the day seven seconds ahead of last year's champion, Luis Leon Sanchez. The Liberty Seguros rider and his team appeared confident at the start, with a battle royale on the cards as both he and Gerrans knew it was going to come down to the climb after 127 kilometres. Sanchez's attack came at the predicted point of the race, and with the help of teammates Sylvain Calzati and JJ Luis Arrieta, Gerrans was able to track the young Spaniard's attack, making sure he maintained his lead in this year's tour. "I had Sylvain Calzati with me and he kept his cool, he kept calm and rode an easy tempo so I could hang onto his wheel. Then we caught JJ Luis Arrieta and he started working as well, and the two of them just towed me back up to Sanchez up the front. They just did an awesome job - it worked out absolutely perfectly," said Gerrans after the finish. How it unfoldedWith the race situation as it was going into yesterday's stage - Gerrans leading Sanchez by seven seconds and Robbie McEwen by 18 seconds - the field lined up in Willunga prepared to battle extreme temperatures and the hill outside the town, which was tipped by most observers to be the deciding factor in this year's tour. But before that point there was 124 kilometres of punishing winds and searing heat to contend with, conditions easily tougher than any stage so far in this year's tour. It was going to be epic. After the first ten kilometres several breaks had tried to get away without success, all being brought back to the peloton. That was until the 17-kilometre mark, when Dimitri De Fauw (Chocolade Jacques) attacked, sparking another 10 riders into action and instigating the day's big move, which was to come seven kilometres down the road. Going through the roundabout outside Aldinga, De Fauw's teammate, Serge Pauwels, came down heavily in a crash with Henk Vogels (Davitamon-Lotto) and Nicola Loda (Liquigas), breaking his left elbow and right wrist. Soon after the accident Vogels had regained his place in the peloton as Pauwels and Loda withdrew from the race, joined soon after by Daniele Colli, who found the going too tough to continue. At the 27 kilometre point 20 riders went clear, opening a break of 23 seconds. Aaron Kemps, Jose Joaquin Rojas (both Liberty Seguros), Jose Luis Arrieta, Sylvain Calzati (both Ag2R), Johan Vansummeren, Nick Gates (both Davitamon-Lotto), Simone Cadamuro (Milram), Manuel Quinziato (Liquigas), Rony Martias (Bouygues Telecom), Glenn D'Hollander, Frederick Willems (both Chocolade Jacques), Glen Chadwick, Sergey Lagutin, Phil Zajicek (all Navigators) and James Meadley (SA.com-AIS) all went clear, quickly establishing a lead of 1'50 as another four riders made a brave break of their own in an attempt to bridge to the leaders. As they neared the 37 kilometre mark, the four riders, Elia Rigotto (Milram), Matthew Lloyd (SA.com - AIS), Paul Crake (UniSA) and Mitch Docker (United Water) were making inroads on the leaders' advantage, and as the front group continued to put more time into the field (an advantage of 3:10 after 39 kilometres) the chasers definitely had their work cut out for themselves. After 41 kilometres, the leading 16 had put 4:10 into the peloton, but in the tough conditions they needed more time if they were to have any hope of staying away. This they did, with the chasing four sitting 1:15 behind their target during the second lap dash past the Aldinga beachfront. Belgian rider Glenn D'Hollander became the virtual leader on the road, but after only 53 kilometres and the temperature continuing to rise, it was always likely his lead wouldn't translate to a concrete result on the finish line. By 54 kilometres the lead enjoyed by the break had grown to 7:36, with the bridging quartet continuing to make up time despite the obvious numerical disadvantage as they sat at 1:10 behind the leaders. Six kilometres later they made contact with the leaders, increasing the break to 20 and completing the quota for the day's escape artists. Meanwhile, back in the peloton, Ag2R continued to set tempo, protecting Gerrans from the wind along the coastline and leaving plenty in reserve for the big moment on the KOM. Speaking before today's start, Gerrans was wary of the fact his team may be expending too much energy in defence of his race lead, but with the easy tempo set by the French squad, all was looking good for Monsieur Gerrans to keep enough in reserve to defend his advantage over Señor Sanchez. Further down the road, the 20-rider break had increased their lead to 8:47, the heat not seeming to bother them as they continued to build on their advantage. This, however, was the most time they were able to put into the field, because from that point on the peloton, controlled by Ag2R and Liberty Seguros, continuously pegged back the break's advantage.
Gerrans explained how this was down at the finish. "That's what we planned to do and it came off perfectly. We thought we'd let a group go, let them ride to about four minutes and put it on Liberty to give us a hand. It went out to ten minutes, so we used a couple of Liberty guys up there because my guys were getting a little bit tired. They've [Gerrans' teammates] just done an awesome job all week - I can't thank them enough." So as the break neared the vital KOM point outside Willunga, Gerrans and Sanchez played cat and mouse, the latter waiting for the perfect time to launch that expected attack. But before that, Russell Van Hout and Paul Crake had launched their stage winning move near the bottom of the climb, blowing the rest of the break to pieces and crossing the summit with a sizeable advantage. It grew to 40, then 50 seconds, then a minute as the pair of teammates two man time-trialed it to the finish. In the peloton, all eyes were on Sanchez, who hit his straps at the 125 kilometre mark to put 10 seconds into Gerrans, a move that wrested the overall lead from the Victorian. But as they approached the remnants of the break which had split up on the climb, Gerrans was able to recruit the help of troopers Calzati and Arrieta to bring Sanchez back after the top of the climb, neutralising the threat to Gerrans' lead and essentially sealing the win for Ag2R. But his work wasn't finished yet - it was time to make it to the finish, and following the finish Gerrans explained, "I was really relieved when I caught him; I was just sat on his wheel and with about five kilometres to go I really started cramping like a bastard then both my quads locked up, then my calves...I was just getting water from whoever I could and putting it on my legs." And despite the scare he made it to the finish with Sanchez, last year's champion conceding defeat after the finish. "I gave it my best shot and came up a bit short," said the defending champion. "Obviously I'm disappointed, but well done to Simon." It was Russell Van Hout's day, however, the newly-crowned national road race champion ecstatic as he crossed the line ahead of teammate Paul Crake, who had helped Van Hout to the victory after taking the KOM points at the top of the hill outside Willunga. Crake said after the finish, "When that breakaway went, we only had one rider in it - that was Russell. Liberty had two, so if it stayed that way we would've lost the teams classification. I said to a few of my teammates, 'right, I've got to go', and a few of the other Aussie guys came with me who were able to bridge the 1:20 gap, and then it was just up to the climb. I gave it everything I had and fortunately it was just Russell who held my wheel." Van Hout paid tribute to the help of Crake after the finish, saying, "Paul just rode the strongest race in the last 15 k's; I just couldn't have done it without him, he's a champion." Matthew Lloyd (SA.com-AIS), who was with the second group on the road as they climbed up from Willunga, crashed heavily on the descent after suffering from heat exhaustion and lost consciousness before hitting the ground. The young Victorian remains in hospital for observation but will be ok and didn't suffer any breakages as a result of his fall.
