Barredo breaks through for big win
Liberty Seguros takes another stage as Ag2R commands

In sweltering conditions heading along the South Australian coastline, Liberty Seguros' Carlos Barredo took stage 3 from Strathalbyn to Yankalilla after an 11-rider breakaway spent most of the day off the front of an Ag2R-controlled peloton. "We're taking advantage of the fact that Ag2R are marking a steady rhythm in the peloton to get ourselves in the breaks," said Barredo at the finish. "The winds are a bonus, but of course the main objective is the overall win."
Going into the day's stage, overall leader Simon Gerrans was keen to hold onto the lead, as was his team, saying to Cyclingnews at the start in Strathalbyn, "We'll play it like we did yesterday - let another group go at the right time and not spend too much energy." And that's exactly what transpired, with Gerrans' team controlling the peloton after letting the early break fly the coop. The 11 riders, coming together as a group after only five kilometres, stayed away all day, building a four-minute lead that lasted until Barredo initiated a splintering of front pack at the 105 kilometre mark.
From there six riders went clear, with Cadel Evans (Davitamon-Lotto) bridging solo soon after to make it seven. After taking third in Yankalilla, Evans said of this final selection, "After a few years you get a good eye for these things, but it was a bit of a surprise." A surprise it may have been, but after signaling his intentions at the start of the day were to play it as it came, taking the mountains jersey and a podium place were just reward for his hard work during the stage.

Starting in searing Strathalbyn, the field in this year's Tour faced another test of strength in very challenging conditions with a 154km sojourn along the South Australian coast, going through the beachside towns of Port Elliot and Victor Harbor. Harbouring plans for a GC consolidation, Davitamon-Lotto's Robbie McEwen told Cyclingnews before the start that, "Today I'll be trying to conserve energy and stay in the bunch - keeping an eye on Sanchez and Gerrans." He recognised that the crosswinds along the peninsula would be very testing, and added that tomorrow's stage through Willunga will be the breaking point of the tour.
But first there were 154 kilometres of punishment in temperatures approaching 40 degrees, reducing the road surface to molten tar in patches; this didn't stop riders from making attempts to get away right from the gun, the first of which came immediately after the short neutral section out of Strathalbyn finished. And it was 24-year-old Barredo, joined by Evans and Jonathon Clarke (SA.com-AIS) that made the early move, quickly gaining a 100-metre lead after four kilometres before being joined by another five riders - Alexandre Botcharov (Credit Agricole), Michele Gobbi (Milram), Vincent Jerome (Bouygues Telecom), Serge Pauwels (Chocolade Jacques) and Matt Hayman (UniSA) before another three riders made their way across. Jose Joaquin Rojas (Liberty Seguros), Daniel Becke (Milram) and Ben Day (UniSA) made up the 11 riders, ready and willing to spend the entire day at the head of the field.

It was then time to turn on the gas, gaining 15 seconds by the 8km mark, 25 seconds by the 10km point and 50 seconds by kilometre 12. Back in the field, the SA.com-AIS crew were having plenty of mechanical problems, experiencing punctures at regular intervals during the opening kilometres as the leaders extended their lead to 1:10 after just 16 kilometres. Looking strong and working well together, the leading 11 riders continued to increase their lead in small increments, going from a gap of 1:20 after 18km to 1:52 at the 20 kilometre point and 2:25 at the 23km mark. Two kilometres later they'd pushed the lead out to 2:55 minutes, the power of Hayman evident as he pushed a big gear to drive the escapees on their journey up the road.
With Ag2R behind them controlling the pace of the peloton, the break hit the 36km mark with a lead of 3:38. Bouygues Telecom's Vincent Jerome punctured but soon made it back to the bunch without expending too much energy in the heat, which has been the talking point of this year's Tour Down Under. After 56 kilometres, the lead group [including Jerome] had stabilised their lead at 4:10, and after the first sprint at Goolwa they remained at 4:15 ahead of the peloton. Becke decided he wanted the points going through Goolwa, taking the sprint ahead of Botcharov and Hayman. With a significant crosswind in their sails and a beachfront beckoning an escape from the 30 degree-plus temperatures, the frontrunners increased their lead after 67km to a healthy 4:35. The big question became - would it be en ought to make it to the finish?

A short time there were later more points won offer, with Becke gladly taking the spoils ahead of Botcharov and Clarke. With the lead increasing to 4:40 the day's KOM loomed, and with Evans feeling good chances are he would take the points on offer to go ahead in that classification. This he did, beating that man Botcharov again, with Pauwels third, Hayman fourth and Clarke fifth. As the peloton rolled their way up the climb heading out of Victor Harbor it was still Ag2R dominating the front of the field, with Gerrans safely tucked away behind his men in blue and white. The Victorian was talking to his teammates, organising the troops to hold the fort for what he hoped would be another day in ochre.
With the peloton tucked up for the night [so to speak] it was time for the action out front to heat up. Having led the stage from virtually the start of the day's proceedings, things started to heat up among the leaders when Barredo made a move after 105 kilometres. Hayman wasn't giving any room to the young Spaniard, sticking to the Liberty Seguros rider's wheel like melting tar until Barredo dropped his chain, forcing him to drop back to the pack before launching another attack. By the time he made it across to Hayman again, he was joined by four riders, Botcharov, Becke and Pauwels, and they were joined soon after by Evans after he bridged solo. The Davitamon-Lotto rider had missed the initial break, but it wasn't long until he took his place among what would be the final selection of the day.

It was then a matter of seeing who had the goods on the final run into the finish, with Barredo, Evans, Botcharov, Becke, Pauwels, Hayman and Jerome pulling away from the trailing four riders and fighting it out for a win in the scorching heat. After establishing a lead of two minutes With around 10 kilometres remaining Barredo took matters into his own hands, attacking and quickly establishing a lead of 40 seconds that would set him up for only his second win as a professional. Speaking after the finish, Barredo said, "I'm not really a fast guy, so I had to stretch it out - I had to try and attack from a long way out." Having spent the whole day in the leading 11, Barredo knew a sprint finish wouldn't be easy. "I tensed it up in the hills and realised that Botcharov and Hayman were really strong, so I had to attack a fair way out," he said through translator Neil Stephens.
With teammate Luis Leon Sanchez in a strong GC position, Barredo said the team has an eye on that prize and one on the teams classification. "Obviously that's our main objective; at the same time we have to fight for the teams classification," he said after the finish. One man who certainly wants to keep that lead away from the Spanish squad is race leader Simon Gerrans, who said after the finish that, "I'm feeling pretty good [about tomorrow's stage]. The guys have got confidence in me, riding like I have the last couple of days, so that gives me confidence and it's a real morale boost."

Tomorrow's stage features the hill at Willunga, the make-or-break point of the tour. Gerrans knows this, and said, "I guess I'm a little bit nervous going into it because that's going to be the race. I've got a few strong teammates so I'm confident I won't be singled out," he said after the finish of today's stage. Cadel Evans, who took the King of the Mountains jersey after today's stage said to ABC radio after the finish, "Once I got into the rhythm I was alright. I'm still early in my season and I'm progressing, so it was a nice surprise today."
