Time bonus puts Hincapie four seconds ahead of Leipheimer

Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) warned everyone yesterday that today's final climb up Sierra Road would be brutal -- and the climb lived up to every expectation, and even surpassed it. Leipheimer followed the KOM leader Bernhard Kohl (T-Mobile) and Floyd Landis (Phonak) in a three man break over the top and down into San Jose -- but it was Discovery Channel doing what they do best -- waiting. "It was important for us to stay together -- that's the way we raced the last ten years in the Tour de France with teams attacking us -- we always stay together and we will catch them eventually," Hincapie explained. "That strategy worked again for us today." Michael Barry, Jason McCartney and Tom Danielson all took turns driving the chase, catching the leaders and leading out Hincapie, with Barry delivering him to the line for his first win of the season.

"It was tough," Hincapie told Cyclingnews just after the race. "Those guys were going pretty good. My climbing is not as good as [Levi] right now. We stayed pretty close, and I knew it was a long way from the top of the climb and to the end. It was really steep." The key to Hincapie's win was the strong team effort, particularly from Tom Danielson, Jason McCartney and Michael Barry. "Michael and Jason were super strong, and Tom [Danielson] did a lot at the end. It was an amazing lead-out there at the end from Michael. Levi was on me and Chris was behind him -- they were going hard."

Danielson was part of the Discovery strategy today, said Hincapie. "Tom is a phenomenal climber, and we wanted him to attack -- but he couldn't do much damage on the climb at the end. Levi and Floyd were really strong, so we couldn't get rid of those guys."

Riding close behind in the chase group after the final climb was Chris Horner, who caught a ride due to the fact that his teammate was up the road. "Discovery did most of the work to bring the break back," Horner said. "We had Cadel up there, and a lot of time trial specialists like Bobby and Discovery. I pretty much had a free ride down the descent until they caught Cadel." Once the leading group was back in the fold, it was Discovery who had numbers and who assumed control with CSC. "We told Dave [Zabriskie] to stop working and told Bobby and Christian [Vande Velde] to work with Discovery," said CSC's Scott Sunderland. "When the caught Cadel we started working -- CSC was working but Discovery pulled the break back," Horner continued. "Jason [McCartney] and Michael [Barry] started doing a lot of work," said Hincapie. "CSC started pulling when we caught Dave [Zabriskie] and we all had the same interests in mind. When we got closer I was able to sit in for the last ten or fifteen kilometers, and get ready for the sprint."

"In the last kilometer it was Barry on the front, with George second and Levi third and me fourth," Horner said. "There was a teammate of mine on my wheel, but I didn't realise it, otherwise I would have jumped sooner." From there Michael Barry put his head down and gave a huge effort to deliver his teammate to the final meters, though Hincapie was a little uncertain how his body would perform this early in the season. "For us it is the first time we have been digging into the red zone since September. It's hard to know how your body will react. You can train well but never as hard as in the race. We normally begin racing in February in the middle of nowhere in Spain, just getting our legs rolling. But here this is very different for us. I know all of the American cyclists are way more motivated in February then they have ever been."

Down to the line it was Hincapie leading with Horner and teammate Josep Jufre Pou, passing Leipheimer. "Hincapie just had a really good sprint at the finish," said Horner. "I had to come around Levi first to get up to Hincapie's wheel -- but I certainly haven't shown that I have the speed to come around Hincapie in the past, but I thought I would give it a go anyways!"

With the stage win, Hincapie erased the six second deficit and put another four seconds between himself and Leipheimer. CSC's Bobby Julich sits nine seconds behind with Floyd Landis in fourth at ten seconds. "Those guys, Levi and Floyd are strong right now though," Hincapie admitted. "But it's nice -- see what I can do in the time trial. It's a good position to be in. Tomorrow will be a very crucial day -- the most crucial of the race. We have some good time trialists on our team as well, but those guys, Floyd and Levi will have the most pressure on them."

T-Mobile's Bernhard Kohl was happy to retain his lead in the KOM competition. "The KOM jersey for me is really nice. I was prepared to protect the jersey today, but it was not easy with the climbs. I was thinking maybe it was not possible for me, but the team was working well for me. On the last climb I was positioned good with Leipheimer. It was a big result for me, and it was nice to stay with the best guys in the front in the mountains. This is my second year as a professional and first jersey with the T-Mobile team. It is important for the team to have the jersey, and I think now it is possible to bring it to the finish."

How it unfolded

Stage two began in Martinez, about 58 miles away from Santa Rosa, under similar sunny skies. Also similar to yesterday was the immediate climbing from sea level into the California hills. Gerolsteiner and T-Mobile took position at the front, protecting their leaders in the overall and KOM categories. After just 11 kilometers, Mark McCormack (Colavita-Sutter Home) tested the field and attacked on an incline. He sat in front for about a kilometer when Mike Sayers (Health Net-Maxxis) attempted to bridge, but brought the whole field with him.

Up and down the road undulated with some small, tough sections of twisting road. Half-way up the category four climb, Michael Creed (TIAA-CREF) shot off the front, and built a small gap. Over the summit, Creed took maximum points and was followed by Ben Jaques-Maynes (Kodakgallery.Com-Sierra Nevada) and Mads Kaggestad (Credit Agricole). The two chasers linked up with Creed after some time while Gerolsteiner sat comfortably on the front. "I went away on the KOM over Happy Valley Road and flew down the hill to bridge across to [Creed and Kaggestad]," said Jaques-Maynes. "We started cooperating immediately and the gap went wide open. The first time check we heard was 1'30" and then next was four minutes!"

Two more tough climbs that were surprisingly uncategorised were ahead of the leading trio as they built their lead, which could be seen as helpful as the KOM leader would not be interested in bringing the two back. But with a category one climb just thirty kilometers from the finish, every team would be driving near the end. "We were pretty surprised that the gap went up to six minutes, but I wasn't surprised by how quickly it came down - I know how hard the ProTour teams can chase."

As the race continued south, two sprint lines were passed without much notice. As the race climbed up to the Calaveres Reservior, the speed increased and the time gap disintegrated as the road curved and snaked -- narrowing down to a single lane with steep drop-offs.

The lead Creed and his compatriots built lasted until the race entered Milpitas, home to the now feared Sierra Road climb. As the trio turned left onto Sierra Road, a wall of pavement ascended into the clouds, lined by spectators the entire way. The steepness was similar to Manayunk and the trio slowed on the early slope. The field was not far behind at this point and Jaques-Maynes was the first to pop. Creed and Kaggestad continued on, with Creed eventually going alone. The field reeled in all the riders by the half-way point up the climb, led by Leipheimer and his Gerolsteiner team. From there, the pace shredded the field, with Leipheimer, Kohl and Landis riding alone on the front.

Kohl took the points on the summit, taking the KOM jersey lead back from Creed on the road, and the three dropped into town. Multiple groups of four and five riders survived behind and began the chase, powered along mostly by Discovery and CSC. By the time the race returned to Milpitas, the chasing groups had organized into a nineteen rider mob and was bearing down on the Leipheimer, Kohl and Landis, thirty-five seconds away.

One by one, the three were overtaken, and the Discovery Channel train rolled on, powered by Tom Danielson, Jason McCartney and Michael Barry. Into San Jose the course bent around five ninety-degree turns until the final four hundred meters to the finish. Hincapie launched off of Barry and held off Horner and teammate Josep Jufre Pou for the win.
