Hincapie answers Haedo's double

Landis retains overall despite Leipheimer's best efforts

If there was any point at which Floyd Landis' (Phonak) overall lead in the Tour of California would be in jeopardy, it would be the fifth stage's rolling parcours and three significant climbs, including the category one San Marco Pass. But Landis successfully defended his leader's jersey on the tough climb, even with a strong effort by Gerolsteiner's Levi Leipheimer near the top. With the main group all together Discovery Channel put their team on the front, and delivered George Hincapie to his second stage win of the race.

"The team did a great job there at the end, Paolo and Michael into the last kilometer," said Hincapie. "Until about three hundred meters to go, which was a long way for me... but I was able to hang on and finish it off with a win. With a team like this working for you it is a lot of pressure to finish it off. The last hundred and fifty [meters] I was counting and it was good nobody was able to come around."

George is a little surprised that he has already notched two wins so early in the season, especially sprint finishes when he has been focusing more on climbing and time trials. "I didn't expect to get two wins so early," Hincapie admitted. "Last season helped my confidence a lot and I believe in myself a lot more than I have in the past, and it is really starting to show. I was a sprinter at one point and I try to work on them once or twice a week, just to not let that totally go away. In situations like this if I can make it over climbs why not have a little... it's easy to do ten second sprints at home and as you saw today it helped a lot -- to keep those fast-twitch muscles going. With all of the training for the climbs and time trials it's easy to let that slide away."

Leipheimer keeps the pressure on

Leipheimer may not have come away with a stage win or any closer to Landis' lead, but he did gain enough points on the only KOM climb to wear the climbers jersey tomorrow. "There are not many opportunities left for me in the race, and today was a first category climb," said Leipheimer. "I've been feeling good and I am not just going to sit there -- I am going to make the race and give it everything I got. I knew the climb and I knew the downhill and knew the chances were not very good. I wasn't thinking at all about the jersey -- this was something that if the points were there I would snatch them up. I had no idea where Bernhard was and I was surprised he could not follow. I just wanted to get across to the breakaway where my teammate was. I had my team just throttle it at the bottom like it was a field sprint, and I just kept going."

Leipheimer made a bold move, attacking solo out of the field halfway up the climb with a teammate sitting on in the break. "At one point it looked like a good situation because I went up to the break and I had a teammate there -- unfortunately I caught them a little too quickly. There were only two of us on the downhill and the Saunier Duval guy wasn't very committed. It was impossible for us to stay away. But it made the race and I came out of it with the [KOM] jersey, so it's not such a bad thing."

Back in the field, Landis did not panic. "We didn't mind that somebody like Levi or a CSC or anybody within the first few guys as long as it wasn't multiple guys working together," Landis explained. "I would rather keep my team with me rather than follow. If I had done that I could count on some attacking as soon as I caught him and then I would be on my own. The best thing was to let Levi have his time and make him pay for it."

In the final kilometer of the climb Landis lost his final teammates, and Hincapie and Discovery drove the pace over the top. "When Levi went it seemed like the situation was still under control," said Hincapie. "Phonak had two guys doing tempo. But near the top Floyd was alone and it seemed like guys were hurting more. I was feeling good so I gave it a shot to see if I could get away. But the descent was not very tricky and I had five or six guys in the group. The best situation was for us to hang back. I had good legs so I just wanted to give it a little try, and it ended up working out anyway."

At this point, Landis was forced to react with Hincapie a threat at only forty-five seconds down on the overall. "I reacted because any time dangerous guys are reacting in front of you, you have to react just to make a point, if nothing else," Landis said. "It was a long way to the finish, and with one kilometer to go [on the climb] I knew they weren't going far. George sprinted and I just assumed he would not have done that, but it got us to the top faster!"

One factor that played well into Discovery Channel's hand was their intimate knowledge of the area, having had their training camp in nearby Solvang for the past few years. "We knew all the roads and we knew that last climb really well. As you could see we had six guys there in the final group, which is more than any other team."

One team that was absent from the goings-on in the end was CSC, which Leipheimer speculates is taking a conservative stance to protect their high GC positions. "I'm not very impressed with their tactics," Leipheimer said. "They are not very aggressive -- they haven't won a stage yet. They have second and third on the GC which is nice, but they haven't won anything. I didn't see Dave or Bobby attacking. If Discovery had sent Danielson with me or if CSC had sent Bobby that would have been ideal. I don't think when it comes to the climbs they are a little afraid -- they want to conserve their spot on GC."

But CSC's Bobby Julich told Cyclingnews that his team had planned on a move at the climb, but decided against it when they saw the level of difficulty was not what they expected. "[The plan] was blown out of the water when we saw the climb wasn't so hard and that there was a headwind. When you are second or third, you can try to make moves but at the same time something may go wrong in that situation. We made the main decision in the time trial because it would be very hard to gain time especially without time bonuses at the finish anymore. There wasn't much talk because we had Jens up the road and we wanted to play that card for a stage win, because he was riding super-strong today. I think Discovery had the same thing in their mind which is why we weren't as aggressive."

Julich was not worried about Leipheimer's move. "There wasn't any need to. When he got the gap I was ten wheels back, and when I didn't see Floyd react, the one who would need to react, he didn't panic and kept his teammates around him -- there was very little to gain and a lot to lose. We just all stuck together and we knew that with forty guys behind him that it would be difficult for him to gain any more time or even stay off for the stage win. The climb wasn't so hard and there was a headwind so it made it easy to stay on wheels. It was all of the GC guys marking each other. It was business as usual." Looking back on the week that has transpired, Julich did say that he wish he had known the first year of this race was going to be as big as it has."If I had known this race would be as big as it is maybe I would have trained more specifically for it!"

Hincapie says his team is content to have two stage wins and is realistic about any chances for a change in the overall. "There aren't many climbs left. Obviously, Floyd hasn't been in any trouble. Right now we are just happy with two stage wins. The final two stages are more for the real sprinters but we will still be out there racing -- we can't give Floyd an easy ride to Redondo Beach, that wouldn't be any fun!"

With only one more stage of any significant climbing, and Sunday's circuit race in Redondo beach almost guaranteed to end in a field sprint, Landis' lead looks rather safe and the stages left up to the sprinters. But when Hincapie was asked if Discovery Channel has what Hincapie calls 'real' sprinters, Landis chimed in, "The guy won two stages, leave him alone!"
