2nd Eneco Tour of Benelux - PTNetherlands & Belgium, August 16-23, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Stage 7 - August 23: Ans (Bel) - Ans (Bel), 201.2 kmSchumacher wins Eneco Tour in bizarre finishExcellent solo by Gilbert in final stageBy Jeff Jones The last stage of the Eneco Tour finished with high drama, with Stefan Schumacher finishing third in the stage and jumping over George Hincapie to win by just one second, after the bonus seconds were worked out. It wasn't as simple as that, however. The bunch was sprinting for second place behind Philippe Gilbert (Française des Jeux), who took a fantastic home victory. With 100m to go, Schumacher led on the curving left hand barrier with Hincapie on his wheel, when he hit the arm of a fan who was perhaps celebrating Gilbert's victory. Schumacher swerved right, causing Hincapie to crash with just 50m to go, but held it up himself to finish third behind Gilbert and Manuele Mori (Saunier Duval). Had Schumi finished second and Hincapie third, the American would have kept the red jersey. A furious Hincapie walked across the line, bike in hand, pointing and yelling at Schumacher, who caused the crash through no fault of his own. 20 minutes later, the race jury decided that the stage result would stand, and Schumacher was thus the final overall winner. "I shouldn't be ashamed. I have deserved the victory," said Schumacher, who in any case wasn't happy on the podium. He stood a good chance of winning without the crash, but now it will be a case of "what if?" "Suddenly I got hit by a spectator and swerved to the right because of it. I definitely did not do that deliberately, I almost crashed myself. I definitely understand Hincapie, but I can't do anything about it. "I don't know what to say. This is my biggest victory, but not my most beautiful. I must process all this first." Discovery Channel's sports director Dirk Demol told Sporza that he would put in a protest. "George would have been third for sure," he said. "And with a third place, George would have had enough bonus seconds to stay just ahead of Schumacher in the classification. I have no idea [whether the protest will do anything] but will certainly do it." "It was a very difficult decision," the chief of the race jury commented. "We decided like that after looking at the video many times. The decision, we think, was correct. The deviation was made after the hand from one person from the public. This is our final decision." Another classy win by GilbertWhile this drama was happening, nothing could take away from the stage victory of Philippe Gilbert. The Française des Jeux rider attacked with 4 km to go and successfully held off the bunch by just 2 seconds, also moving himself up to fourth overall. "During the stage, I didn't do any major efforts so at the finish, I felt fresh," said Gilbert. "I waited for the right moment to attack, and came back on the wheel of Lövkvist. I told him to ride, but we had a very strong headwind and it was very hard to make the gap. But finally, I gave it everything I had and it's pretty special! "To win here is like when Boonen won in Balen - I live here in the Ardennes so it's great. I always wanted to win at home but the other races here are something else: Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège... I always try but it's hard to succeed. I'm very happy with my result here: a stage win, the top five, a third placing and fifth in the time trial, so I'm satisfied." How it unfoldedThe final stage of the Eneco Tour was by far the toughest, a 201 km journey starting and finishing in the Liège suburb of Ans. Many of the climbs used in Liège-Bastogne-Liège were featured, including the Redoute, Sprimont, and Saint Nicolas in the final 40 km. The first attack of the day came after 2 km from Bram De Groot (Rabobank), Nicolas Roche (Cofidis), Paul Martens and Piet Rooijakkers (Skil-Shimano). That didn't succeed, but De Groot and Rooijakkers were again in the right move that went at 10 km. Also in the break were Mario Aerts (Davitamon-Lotto), William Bonnet (Credit Agricole), Aaron Olson (Saunier Duval), Steven Caethoven (Chocolade Jacques), and Erwin Thijs (Unibet.com). The best placed of the seven was Rooijakkers, who started the day 2'03 behind Hincapie on GC in 35th place. Discovery Channel and Quick.Step set a controlling tempo, allowing the break 4'00 after 53 km, then 6'00 after 90 km, with the average speed sitting just below 39 km/h. But as the break hit the Côte de Wanne, the first of nine climbs in the final 95 km, their lead started to fall quickly. On the Haute Levée (85 km to go), the gap came down to 3'00 as Andrea Peron (CSC) and Maarten den Bakker (Milram) attacked the bunch in pursuit of the seven up the road. The bridging attempt was successful and Den Bakker and Peron made it across with 54 km to go. But by this stage, the peloton was 1'30 behind, and Rabobank had started working on the run into La Redoute at 40 km to go. The nine leaders got to that climb with just 1'18, and although Rooijakkers and Peron survived to the summit, the rest were caught. Posthuma (Rabobank) looked strong, as did Gilbert, while Hincapie marked the dangerous riders and waited for his Discovery teammates to rejoin on the descent. With 36 km to go, Thomas Lövkvist (Française des Jeux) and Axel Merckx (Phonak) attacked in pursuit of Peron and Rooijakkers, closing the half minute gap quickly. Then Karsten Kroon (CSC) and Thomas Dekker (Rabobank) went across, as Popovych and Ekimov kept the tempo high in the peloton for Hincapie. Things came back together with 32 km to go, before Merckx and Lövkvist got away again with Gerben Löwik (Rabobank), Laurent Lefèvre (Bouygues), Nicolas Portal (Caisse d'Epargne) and Daniele Righi (Lampre). The new break was able to gain as much as 45 seconds, with Löwik, Merckx and Lövkvist swallowing the bonus seconds at the sprint on the Côte de Sart-Tilman with 20 km to go - very much in Hincapie's favour. They still had 45 seconds on the Cote de St Nicolas with 11 km to go, where Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas, 3rd on GC) tried to get clear of the bunch, but failed. At the top, Portal and Merckx attacked the break and took another lot of bonus seconds, but were rejoined by the other four in the break with 7 km left. The pace had lifted behind as Hincapie had run out of teammates, so it was a free for all with riders going for stage glory and the chance of a good GC. The Merckx break came back at 6 km to go, prompting a counter attack by Maxime Monfort and Bram Tankink, which did not succeed. Then at just over 4 km to go, Philippe Gilbert placed his winning attack. Hincapie didn't react, even though Gilbert was only 28 seconds behind on GC, but Schumacher did try to get across. With 2 kilometres to go, Gilbert had 8 seconds, with Merckx now leading the bunch in pursuit. But Gilbert was able to survive all the way to the finish to take a well deserved victory. Then the drama unfolded behind with the sprint for second place. At 100m out, Schumacher looked to have got it sewn up, but Hincapie was positioned on the German's wheel to take third and therefore keep the leader's jersey. But that question will remain unanswered as an unfortunate series of events, started by an overenthusiastic spectator, led to Hincapie crashing and finishing the Eneco Tour on foot. Schumacher finished as the overall winner, but he will not be able to completely savour this victory.
