Tour of Britain - 2.1Great Britain, August 29-September 3, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - September 2: Rochester to Canterbury, 152.6kmNo House party in Canterbury in go-slow showBy Gerry McManus in Canterbury Francesco Chicchi (QuickStep-Innergetic) won the final sprint into Canterbury on Saturday, September 2 after racing had finally started with less than 2km to go – much to the disappointment of Britain's Kristian House (Recycling.co.uk). The talented rider, originally a resident in the local town of Ashford in Kent, was expecting to race in front of friends and family on the way to Canterbury but the 27-year-old rider was left flat after they slowly cycled 152km to the finish. The race left the start line in Rochester on time but due to a misunderstanding in directions the race took the wrong exit from a roundabout as they rode a parade lap through the town. Subsequently the race was stopped for around 25 minutes as the convoy and riders re-assembled. Fortunately the rain hadn't started at this point. After the race was officially started it became apparent that a number of teams were not prepared to race and the CSC team went to the front and rode "piano" between 18 and 22 mph. The peloton wound its way through the Kent countryside at a fairly leisurely place and the mountains and sprint primes were ostensibly uncontested. It appeared the teams were not happy about the safety of the race and the go-slow was their protest to the race organisers. The rain that came down certainly didn't help persuade the riders to start racing as they donned rain capes. When racing finally got going it was Ian Stannard (GB) that had the whole field lined out behind him as he hit the front with 500 metres to go. The big teams took control in the final 200m with Chicchi winning the gallop from Mark Cavendish (T-Mobile) and Aart Vierhouten (Skil-Shimano) finishing third. Points leader Russell Downing (Recycling.co.uk) came in fifth place and so Cavendish had finally wrestled the green jersey from his shoulders but the T-Mobile stagiaire only has a slender lead of two points going into the final London stage tomorrow. Of course Martin Pedersen (CSC) retains the yellow jersey and the Dane decided to give the champagne spraying and post race interviews a miss. There was no change on leadership in the sprints or mountains competitions. House was livid at not being allowed to race. "No one wanted to race," said House: "I say no one but QuickStep didn't want to race and I guess T-Mobile didn't want to race. Whenever the smaller teams like us and the GB team attacked, they just brought us back and they abuse the hell out of you. I attacked through Dover after I was told over the radio that the race was on. My manager told me that all the other managers had said that they were going to race. I attacked and I got chased down by someone and one of the T-Mobile riders came over and just put me in the kerb just because they didn't want to race. "Fair enough if they don't want to race but that's no reason why they should dictate it to the lesser riders like myself. I'm not a Pro-Tour rider or even a Continental professional. As far as they are concerned I am an amateur. I think it's outrageous. I can see their point and I know why they are doing it but the way they do it is out of order. We only started to race with 2km to go when the GB team took over from CSC on the front of the race. CSC were riding on the front just doing enough all day. "Maybe this race could be a joke for them and it's not as big as other races they are doing," House continued: "For guys like me today has been the target of the last eight weeks training. Today was the stage for me but when you attack you get taken out of the race. This morning wasn't so bad really. OK so we had to stop and we were waiting around for about 25 minutes. It wasn't great and there was a mistake on the organisation but that doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice a whole day of racing." Tomorrow the race goes from Greenwich into London over Tower Bridge and to Hampstead Heath finishing back in the city with 20 laps of a circuit based on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.
