Tour of Britain - 2.1Great Britain, August 29-September 3, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - August 31: Bradford to Sheffield, 180kmPozzato storms into Sheffield and Pedersen regains the yellow jerseyBy Gerry McManus in Sheffield Filippo Pozzato (Mapei) soloed his way into the city centre in Sheffield to take victory in a rain swept stage three of the Tour of Britain. The 24-year-old Italian escaped from what was left of a 30-man break that had formed as the climbs of Broomhead and The Strines had loomed. The early yellow jersey owner Martin Pedersen (CSC) proved strong in the Yorkshire hills and finished strongly in fourth place to regain the overall race lead. Russell Downing (DFL-Cyclingnews.com-Litespeed) finished in 8th place to retain the green points jersey. Unfortunate race leader Mathew Goss (South Australia.com-AIS) decided to play it safe with a knee injury and retired from the race. In an eventful last few miles where Tom Boonen (Quick Step-Innergetic) crashed, Pozzato broke free just after the final sprint at Millstone Edge with only 10-miles left and finished 32 seconds ahead of second placed Michael Rogers (T-Mobile). Last year's winner Nick Nuyens (Quick Step-Innergetic) finished in third spot. Driving rain had made the second half of the race very difficult especially on the descents from the last two 1st category climbs. Boonen remounted and after an early effort to regain the leaders eventually had to forget his chances of a stage win and finished in a small group 19 minutes back. How it unfoldedWorld road race champion Boonen had set the standard for the stage by attacking after only one mile and when Andy Schleck (CSC) set the pace on the first climb at Leathley Bank, there were already riders being dropped. Ben Greenwood (Recycling.co.uk) was glued to his wheel and eventually reached the summit first to take maximum KOM points. The weather was still warm and partially sunny as the peloton split into three groups along the flat roads between Harrogate and East Hardwick but only the front two were serious about racing. Pedersen had signaled his intent by taking three seconds bonus when he won the prime at Harrogate. The 11 man front group contained Piet Rooijakkers (Skil Shimano), Roger Hammond (GB), Jakob Piil (CSC), Robert Hunter (Phonak iShares), Hugo Sabido (Barloworld), Moises Aldape Chavez (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare), Michael Rogers (T-Mobile), Erwin Thijs (Unibet), Andy Capelle (Landbouwkredit-Colnago), Kristian House (Recycling.co.uk) and Pedersen. The Quick.Step and South Australia teams had missed the cut and were chasing in a larger group behind at around a minute. Pedersen was now the race leader on GC on the road and his lead was heading towards minutes rather than seconds. Pozzato took off in pursuit on his own and made it across the leaders meanwhile Goss and Co fought hard and managed to bridge the divide as the big climbs loomed. The front group was whittled down to 26 riders on the climbs as Schleck took maximum points on the Broomhead KOM and Pedersen took the honours at Strines Moor. Schleck's 31 point total now gives him a seven point lead in the KOM competition. The rain played havoc with the riders on the steep hair pin bends and narrow roads on the run in to Sheffield and a number of riders crashed out of contention. But Pozzato had no such problems and took the generous applause as he had time to sit up and enjoy the moment. "The team decided to race for me today," said Pozzato: "Because I need to get a result to get to help get my selection for the Italian team in the world championships. We had two guys in an early move after 15km and we chased another move and then I got across to the break of 11 riders. We attacked again and then Boonen and Jakob Piil crashed and I waited for them to get back on. I attacked with about 15km to go and the fact that I got such a big gap shows that I am going well and hopefully people who are watching for the Italian team see this as a sign. "I can ride well in good or bad weather. It doesn't affect me when I am riding for a result," he continued: "The penultimate descent was the dangerous one and that's where everybody crashed." It's only Pozzato's second win of the year but the other one was the classic Milan-San Remo. Russell Downing found it hard going too. "Even knowing the roads myself it was really bad out there. It all split up on the first climb and there were six or seven of us away and I told Nick Nuyens to slow down for a bad corner and he thanked me for that. I am not sure if Pedersen can be caught as he has a strong team around him. Sheffield is always the hardest stage and it's out of the way now." Pedersen was upbeat at the post race conference. "It was a long crazy day with the bad weather and narrow roads," said the first year CSC professional: "You have to stay focused the whole time because everything could be over in a split second. I am very pleased to have taken back the yellow jersey and the team did a tremendous job today. It was pretty cool. The team is strong and they work 100 percent for me."
