60th Tour de Romandie - PTSwitzerland, April 25-30, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - April 28: Bienne-Leysin , 164.6kmThe Liberty to win: Contador triumphs with copycat victoryBy Anthony Tan in Leysin How the tide turns en Suisse. One day Discovery, the next two Davitamon... Well, today, Liberty Seguros proved their Würth - pun intended - as 23 year-old comeback kid Alberto Contador took full advantage of the freedom to do what he wanted, when he wanted and how he wanted. An almost identical performance to his victory atop Les Paccots exactly twelve months ago, the Spaniard attacked with an inner force of someone who has being on the brink of death and bounced back, driving home his advantage to not only earn him the stage, but also the overall lead in the 60th Tour de Romandie. "From the beginning of the day, I had good sensations and was waiting for the last climb," said Contador. "Since we had a majority of riders, the key was our strategy and it has worked out perfectly for us. I saw my opportunity at four kilometres to go, attacked and it paid off. "The difference between the two victories [in Switzerland] was that last year I was in better form. [Last year], I had won a stage of the Tour Down Under and Setmana Catalana, plus the overall, and few weeks before, I won the final time trial at the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. "So far this year I hadn't won anything, but in the Tour of the Basque Country, I had a good level. I believe that this new preparation, far more delayed [to focus on] the Tour of France, is giving good results. This victory is very important for me: Romandie was the last opportunity to win before starting my preparations for the Tour, and now I will be able to do it with better sensations and hope for good things for the rest of the season." You're following in the footsteps of a myriad of great Spanish climbers, like Luis Ocaña and Federico Bahamontes, Contador was told - how does he feel about that? "Well, that's a great compliment," was his modest reply, "but they conquered some of the biggest mountains, and I have some way to go before I can put myself in that league," he smiled. Consequently, overnight leader Chris Horner lost his race lead, but as he said the day before, he was realistic about his chances before turning a pedal-stroke today: "Yeah, you kind of know... I wasn't surprised, I knew yesterday. I'm a pretty realistic guy, I know where my form's at; unless I recovered from Liège, which was what I was hoping... especially with Cadel up there too, I just ran out of days of going at the limit," he said to Cyclingnews at the finish line in Leysin. "I really hurt yesterday, but I think it was the effort from Liège [Bastogne-Liège], so deep, so many times... basically all season so far, I've been goin' deep. Today, in all honesty, I wasn't at maximum suffering, but I just couldn't do it; I would try, then the legs would just stop... I think I've just ran out of how many days I can do in the red like this season - and today was probably the peak!" laughed the good-natured Horner. Nonetheless, his third-placed team-mate Cadel Evans was one of the day's biggest beneficiaries, jumping from seventh to fourth overall, behind Contador, Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears, 0'16 back) and Jörg Jaksche (Liberty Seguros-Würth, 0'28 behind). Clearly, whatever problems the Australian was having earlier on appears to have been sorted - or are at least being dealt with. "Yeah, yeah - the problem was last week, we didn't know what was causing the problem I had with my eye, and I think we found out what it is now," he told Cyclingnews. Declared a far more confident Evans: "All the best riders are at the top of the classification now." Asked if the stage yielded any surprises, he replied, "No, it was actually what I expected. Yesterday, Liberty looked like the best with three; we were good with two, we played our cards right and we managed to win and get the jersey, which, on our part, was tactically very good. But today on an uphill finish, when they're three and I'm one," Evans shrugged with a gesture of 'what can you do?', before saying, "I can follow one, I can follow two - but when a third goes full gas... " Still, with a shade over a minute separating the top ten and arguably the hardest stage to come tomorrow, followed by what will most probably be a very important time trial, it's a Tour de Romandie for the taking. However, with three of those ten from Liberty Seguros-Würth, it would take a wild punter not to back them. Said Contador, "Of course I am interested in the general classification and holding onto the leader's jersey. I believe that here we have the strongest team with three riders - Jaksche, Kashechkin and myself - with options for victory and we have to try to take advantage of this opportunity." Stage 4 - April 29: Sion-Sion, 127,7 km The penultimate stage looks eerily similar in profile to that cruel final day in Ulrichen at last year's Tour de Suisse. which saw Australian Michael Rogers lose to an amazing Aitor Gonzalez, albeit under controversial circumstances. Three Category 1 climbs in just under 130 kilometres for a total 2,360 metres elevation can only be described as a sufferfest - even the gruppetto will need to be moving just to make the time limit! How it unfoldedMinus the face of Milram's Fabio Sacchi, 155 riders began the third stage under a light north wind and damp roads, although when the race got underway at 13:25, it wasn't raining. The day's menu began with 75 flat kilometres to the base of the Cat. 2 climb at Vuarrens, and like yesterday, the peloton got off to a snappy pace, scooting along the edges of Neuchâtel and the Bienne Lakes at 50 clicks an hour. An ever so slight lull sparked the first attack after 25 kilometres, initiated by Quick.Step-Innergetic's Wouter Weylandt and eagerly assisted by Liberty Seguros-Würth's Jose Redondo Ramos. By the first of the day's two sprints in Auvernier (km 34,6), the Belgian-Spanish combo had a one and a half minute advantage, and after 50 kilometres, their lead was just shy of the four-minute mark. After getting dropped and suffering like the proverbial dog yesterday, it was little surprise to see the abandon of Dimitri Konyshev, who will be remembered for a 120 kilometre breakaway that amounted to exactly nothing two days ago. A bientôt, Dimitri! Meanwhile, the lead duo were riding so well that 21 year-old neo-pro Redondo became the maillot jaune virtuel by km 65, the two enjoying a 9'20 buffer from the peloton. Back in the bunch, a mass pile-up saw the names of Montgomery, Guidi, Mazzoleni and Bertogliati hit the deck, but none were believed to be seriously hurt. Though later in the day, Montgomery was forced to exit the race. Over the climb at Vuarrens (km 85.5), LPR's Roger Beuchat took third place and improved his lead in the mountains classification, now with a 10 point advantage over compatriot David Loosli (Lampre-Fondital). Just shy of the century mark, Redondo and Weylandt held their gap, the time-keeper telling us 9'30. With 60 kilometres remaining, Davitamon-Lotto assumed their place at the head of the peloton to give race leader Chris Horner every possible chance. However, our friends up front resisted the chase and continued to look good: approaching the Swiss Riviera town of Vevey (km 126.5, 38.1 km to go, and last year's European residence for yours truly!), their lead was still a little over eight minutes. But that's when the peloton began motoring, causing Redondo to lose his maillot jaune virtuel - oh well, mate, it wasn't real, anyway :) At km 140 and after 120 kilometres away, their lead was 5'40; as they hit the final climb to Leysin, it was a little more than four minutes. It was also announced (fairly discreetly, mind you) that early race leader Paolo Savoldelli was suffering from diarrhoea, so we weren't expecting the Discovery Channel leader to force the pace in the finale, who in fact lost a massive 12 minutes by the day's end. At exactly 17:00 hours, the youngster Redondo said adieu to his Belgian companion Weylandt, still holding a two-minute lead, while back in the peloton, the attacks began thick and fast. First Oscar Sevilla (T-Mobile) attacked, then Liquigas' Dario Cioni took a solo flyer. But still, it was Redondo two kilometres from Le Sépey (km 159,5, 5.1 km to go) and 48 seconds in front, with Sevilla and Cioni a little further behind. Just before the summit of Le Sépey, the two Spaniards met, while another, Redondo's team-mate Alberto Contador, shot out of a rapidly dwindling front group and went straight past them. Chasing behind was a group of 11: Sevilla, Redondo, Miguel Martin Perdiguero (Phonak), Sylvester Szmyd (Lampre-Fondital), Cadel Evans (Davitamon-Lotto), Alejandro Valverde, Joaquin Rodriguez Oliver (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears), Sergio Ghisalberti (Milram), Jorg Jaksche, Andrey Kashechkin (Liberty Seguros-Würth) and Andrea Noe (Liquigas). For this group, however, their efforts were to little avail. Contador was pedalling with a fury one first witnessed in Australia a year and half ago, where he came back from a life-threatening blood clot to take a magnificent comeback victory at the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under, declaring it the most significant of his career. And twelve months after he earned his first stage win at the Tour de Romandie, he repeated the triumph in Leysin. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by AFP Photo
