Lest we forget: Horner fantastic in the Jurassic!

Until June 16 last year, many Europeans had forgotten the name of Chris Horner. It had been five years since he competed full-time in Europe, last with Française des Jeux, but on that summer's day in Switzerland, the American made them remember with a superb mountain-top victory at the Tour de Suisse. Another year on in the heart of the Jura mountains, the now 34 year-old has done it again, taking advantage of having the numbers, speed and suppleness for his second succès en Suisse.

And while he had every intention of winning the stage, Horner said no had no intention of taking the race lead: "No, absolutely not - it just came with it, so I'll take it," he giggled to Cyclingnews.

"I was a little bad today," Horner recalled. "I had some moments where I wasn't so sure of the legs, but we hit the climb and I was to able to follow the pace on the climb; the Illes Balears rider Joaquim Rodriguez was very strong on the climb but very steady. Afterwards on the descent, Savoldelli was... whooaaah - now I understand where [he gets his nickname] - it was the first time I'd seen it, and I thought for sure he was going to crash a couple of times he went into some of the corners so fast.

"But he managed to stay up and split the group in three or four different places; at one time, I had to chase the whole time down the descent to get back on. Luckily, I had Cadel Evans in the front; he didn't take a pull and he slowed it down till I got there, and then we started playing some tactics after that.

Asked on the discussions between Evans and himself, Horner replied with a laugh: "We didn't need to discuss with Valverde there. It's pretty clear: you come out of the last corner with Valverde, you're going to lose.

"He's such a well-rounded rider but more than anything, his sprint is incredible. You've got to know your job, and when you see Valverde in the group with you, you know you can't win so you have to attack - you let it come to a sprint, there's no chance of winning.

"Hopefully the yellow jersey gives a little extra incentive, but I definitely... I'm certainly there with the top, I don't doubt that at all; tomorrow's going to be a mountain-top finish instead of a descent and there's so much tactics involved there. I'm certainly up there with the top climbers in the race, but we have to see tomorrow exactly if I can climb with the very best, or just some of the best."

Two days ago, it felt like Davitamon-Lotto had the weight of the world on their shoulders. Now with two victories in as many days and won with apparent ease, it appears as if they're lying on the couch! But Horner said today wasn't easy at all, and in fact suffered a great deal more than last Sunday where he finished eighth in La Doyenne.

"In Liège-Bastogne-Liège, I wasn't suffering, I felt fantastic, and today I was at the limit most of the time and never felt comfortable all day. So I think I was better at Liège, and the problem that I think I'm having is maybe the days in between Liège - that was only my second race of that distance - so I think I needed a few more days of recovery.

"Maybe now with three days between Liège, the legs will be a little better tomorrow. Either way, I hold the jersey, I don't hold the jersey... it's not a huge priority. But once you have the win, they can't take that away from ya!"

One not so content with today's proceedings was overnight leader Paolo Savoldelli, whose famed descending skills almost won him the stage. The defending Giro champion has continually played himself down since taking the opening lead in Geneva - but it was clear from his sullen face on the podium he didn't want to lose it. However, with two very difficult stages to follow before the final time trial in Lausanne, Savoldelli has plenty of opportunities to salvage his loss of today.

Said Horner of Savoldelli: "I can give you my opinion: I think he's incredibly strong and stands probably the best chance of winning this race overall. You have Valverde who's so fast and can pick up time bonuses in the few stages coming up, but Savoldelli can time trial, he's on his way to the Giro, so naturally I would think his form is coming up, not going down."

Stage 3 - April 28: Bienne-Leysin

The only point-to-point stage of this year's Tour de Romandie, tomorrow's stage begins in Biel in the far west. It's a relatively flat ride southeast to Leysin until 15 kilometres from the finish - but that's where things change, the day ending atop the 1,318 metre-high Category 1 ascent of Le Sépey. Here, we're sure to see fireworks galore, the first significant reordering on general classification and a clear idea of just who will be standing on that final podium in Lausanne.

How it unfolded

Arm warmers were the order of the day at the 13:15 start in Porrentruy's Hôtel-de-Ville; it wasn't raining, but it was un peu froid, and the weather report from Météo Suisse suggested un peu pluie was on the way. Furthermore, apart from two Category 1 mountains, no less than eight railway crossings were to be crossed over the 171,2 kilometre-long parcours, so we were all hoping for a safe journey for the 158 riders left in the race; Crédit Agricole's Alexandre Botcharov was today's only non-starter.

Like yesterday's stage, Stage 2 consisted of three large loops, this time held in the Canton of Jura. The principal challenges included the climb to Bourrignon after 56.2 kilometres, with the second the Col de la Croix, it's GPM located just 13.5 kilometres from the finish.

However, unlike yesterday's stage, it was a nervous start with plenty of attacking; the first escape happening after 12 kilometres with Juan Manuel Garate (Quick.Step), Bart Dockx (Davitamon-Lotto), Joaquin Rodriguez Olivier (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears), Joseba Beloki Dorronsoro (Liberty Seguros-Würth) and Staf Scheirlinckx (Cofidis) represented. The names showed promise but the cohesion didn't, and it was peloton groupé by km 15. Already yesterday's lone escapee Dimitri Konyshev (LPR) was in difficulty, and it was going to be a long, long day for the Russian.

After 20 kilometres, Konyshev's Swiss team-mate Roger Beuchat and compatriot David Loosli were feeling a little more lively, their move prompting Aitor Perez Arrieta (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears) and Christophe Moreau (Crédit Agricole) to chase. However for the latter two, it was too late, and after double the distance, the Swiss pairing had amassed a two-and-a-half minute advantage. Nevertheless, Moreau continued his chase although Arrieta returned to the peloton.

It was an inspiring breakaway by the two locals with Beuchat a citizen of Jura and the Bernese Loosli. Not much was happening in the peloton behind them, apart from Française des Jeux's Bradley McGee taking third place in the first bonus sprint in Délémont (km 44,1) and moving within a second of the maillot jaune virtuel.

Smartly, Beuchat and Loosli rode tempo up the first climb to Bourrignon and by the first passage of Porrentruy, the peloton was over 10 minutes behind; the obstinate Moreau pressed on 6'22 in arrears, venting his frustration through his pedals after missing the move.

A closed railway crossing just before the century mark à la Paris-Roubaix saw the lead pair wait for almost one and a half minutes with no neutralisation of the peloton by race officials. Consequently, Moreau closed the gap to five minutes with the peloton now nine minutes down.

Through the second passage of Porrentruy (km 129, 42,2km to go), Moreau had just about given up but the bunch certainly hadn't, who were five minutes behind and closing. 20 kilometres later, a tired Beuchat and Loosli made it onto the final climb that must have resembled an oversized hurt bag, which turned out to be the case for more than a few members of the peloton as it split into three on the Col de la Croix's lower slopes.

Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears's Joaquin Rodriguez Olivier put in a killer move that narrowed the front group further, with no more than 15 riders going first over its crest. Naturally, 'Il Falco' Savoldelli dropped down the descent like a stone, opening up a lead that split the group yet again: after some manic chasing, only the names of Alexandre Moos (Phonak), Cadel Evans and Chris Horner (both Davitamon-Lotto), Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears), Andrey Kashechkin (Liberty Seguros-Würth) and Dario Cioni (Liquigas) got back on.

Then six kilometres from the finish, Evans put in a big attack before being caught, and with Davitamon holding the numbers, it was cleverly countered by his teammate Horner less than a kilometre later. After his top-ten finish in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the American was a man on form with the confidence to match...

... and with his hands on the hoods - his favoured riding position - elbows well bent and head down, bum up, Horner hammered to the finish, only looking back on the final left-hand corner before throwing his arms up in delight for his second success in Switzerland.
