60th Tour de Romandie - PTSwitzerland, April 25-30, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - April 29: Sion-Sion , 127.7kmV is for victory, versatility - and Valverde! The final countdown: Lausanne TT to decide overallBy Anthony Tan in Sion It's been an amazing last week and a half for Alejandro Valverde. His victory in Flèche Wallonne was brilliant; Liège-Bastogne-Liège was confirmation; then four days ago in Geneva, almost winning the Tour de Romandie prologue showcased his wealth of talents. Today, after 2,360 metres of climbing in just under 130 kilometres, he still packed the punch of a bunch sprinter to claim the fourth stage ahead of Alexandre Moos (Phonak) and Cadel Evans (Davitamon-Lotto). In doing so, it brings Mr. Versatility within six seconds of the overall lead of Liberty Seguros's Alberto Contador - but with four riders separated by just 28 seconds and eleven separated by 1 minute 17, the race is set for a nail-biting conclusion with tomorrow's time trial in Lausanne. "It was a really hard day with the three climbs, but my legs were good and I'm glad the group worked well to catch Kashechkin," said Valverde. Asked about his chances against Contador in tomorrow's chrono, and whether he believed himself to be better than his Spanish counterpart, he replied: "No, I'm not better or worse. Well, perhaps Contador is a little better, but regardless, it will be a really difficult time trial. I'm just really happy with what was happened these past few weeks, and now being able to fight for the general [classification] here in Switzerland. "I already know the time trial course tomorrow because I did it in 2002 in my neo-pro year, and I know it's really hard. If I win, I'm happy; if Contador wins, I'm happy too, because credit should go to the best rider," he said. For a moment, the day looked like turning into another win for Liberty Seguros when Andrey Kashechkin still had a one and a half minute lead over a very select group of riders with 13 kilometres to go, having attacked the peloton three kilometres from the summit of Crans Montana. In fact, he had become the virtual race leader, but in the end, the Kazakhstani succumbed to the Canton du Valais' typically fierce headwind. "Our team was really good; they were all present [at the front] today and worked really hard," said Contador, despite losing 10 seconds to Valverde today. "It was a good day, because I still have the yellow jersey and the team has shown our strength. That Alejandro won, it's okay with me." That Valverde has improved his time trialling quite considerably since last season, however, is some cause for concern, admits our race leader, but it's not because of what he saw in Geneva: "No, it's not the prologue that worries me, it's the performance of Valverde in the time trial on the last day of Pais Vasco [he came eighth, while Valverde finished second - ed.]," Contador said. "It's a hard time trial and while there is Valverde, there's also many others within a minute - so anyone could win tomorrow." Stage 5 - April 29: Lausanne ITT, 20.4 km Set in the city that houses the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee, the Lausanne time trial will undoubtedly determine the overall winner of the 60th Tour de Romandie. It's arguably one of the most challenging TT parcours in any stage race, and a combination of power, suppleness and speed are the requirements; should one fall short in any one of the three, we'll find out 20 kilometres later. Apart from Valverde, some of Contador's biggest challengers will be Australian Cadel Evans, third on GC (@ 0'24) and excellent against the clock; his own team-mates Jörg Jaksche and Andrey Kashechkin, currently fourth and seventh overall (@ 0'28 and 1'04 respectively) and both renowned time triallists, the former with seven top-ten finishes in events over a similar distance, most recently finishing fourth in the Tirreno-Adriatico TT, and the latter sixth at the world TT championship in Madrid last year and coming within a whisker of winning the prologue in Paris-Nice; and Liquigas' Dario Cioni, maybe a little too far away in eleventh on GC (@ 1'17), but a chrono specialist nonetheless and a good outside bet. How it unfoldedToday's stage followed in the tradition of a three-looped parcours used twice earlier this week. But going against the grain was the inclusion of three Category 1 climbs within the relatively short distance of 127,7 kilometres: Ovronaz (km 25.7, altitude 1,165m) for starters, Veysonnaz (km 66.1, altitude 1,167m) for mains, and 'La Cima Coppi', the 1,529 metre climb to Crans Montana, would make a very hard-to-digest dessert. 147 lycra-clad lads lined up at the start in Sion at half-past one this afternoon, the notable absentee being Discovery Channel leader Paolo Savoldelli, who was unlucky to have suffered a bad bout of diarrhoea during yesterday's stage, with Markus Zberg (Gerolsteiner), Bert Roesems (Davitamon-Lotto) and Enrico Gasparotto (Liquigas) also marked as 'DNS'. When we spoke with Discovery Channel's assistant team manager Lorenzo Lapage, he told us that Savoldelli's problems only began during the race. "I think he ate something wrong, but mentally, after the race, he was okay and he felt better. He went three or four times to the toilet [after the stage], he slept at the hotel last night and this morning he went home. He now says the problems are over, so I'm pretty sure it was something he ate." No doubt it was the smart thing to do with Il Falco's main event just a week away: "When you have a stage like yesterday and you have problems with your stomach, you lose so much energy; it was better to send him home to recover, so that he's ready for the Giro," Lapage explained. It took just two kilometres of racing before the day's first attack, sparked by Davitamon-Lotto's Bart Dockx and Cyril Dessel from AG2R-Prévoyance. Minutes later, another 15 joined them, the names of McCarty (Phonak), Peron (CSC, and the best placed on GC, 4'07 behind Contador), Engels, Garate, Santaromita (Quick.Step-Innergetic), Weening (Rabobank), Brard (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears), Iglinsky (Milram), Parra Pinto (Cofidis), Charteau (Crédit Agricole), Roy (Francaise des Jeux), Perez Moreno (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Albasini (Liquigas), Moreau (AG2R-Prévoyance) and Muraglia (LPR) all represented. It was unsurprising to see this group narrow down to seven by the top of Ovronaz (km 25.7), Parra Pinto taking maximum points ahead of Charteau, Muraglia, Peron and Moreau, who were just under a minute and a half ahead of the peloton. Speaking of the peloton, not much was happening at this point, apart from one or two riders sporadically popping off the back and the team of race leader Alberto Contador controlling proceedings at its head. Down the descent to Sion and on the dead-flat roads before the climb of Veysonnaz, another four got back on to make a lead group of 11 at km 45,9, now with a 1'45 advantage. In the move were: McCarty (Phonak), Peron (CSC), Zberg (Gerolsteiner), Engels, Garate, (Quick.Step-Innergetic), Iglinsky (Milram), Parra Pinto (Cofidis), Charteau (Crédit Agricole), Albasini (Liquigas), Moreau (AG2R-Prévoyance) and Muraglia (LPR). This lead group were still all together at the Veysonnaz-Village, which marked the crest of the day's second climb after 66.1 kilometres. LPR rider Muraglia took the mountain prime ahead of Parra Pinto and Garate, the break's advantage having edged past the two-minute mark, but with the climb of Crans Montana left, it was never going to be enough. Already by its lower slopes, the lead group shattered, with just three at the head - Juan Manuel Garate (Quick.Step-Innergetic), Maxim Iglinskiy (Milram) and Ivan Ram Parra Pinto (Cofidis). The latter, who had previously demonstrated his ability on the first two climbs (although looked shaky on the descents), was setting the tempo, and a few minutes later, Iglinskiy found himself saying adieu - but it was more a bientôt when the Russian returned to the fold moments later. After 93 kilometres' racing, an attack by T-Mobile's Oscar Sevilla saw Joaquin Rodriguez Oliver (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears) and Andrey Kashechkin (Liberty Seguros-Würth) join him. One by one, the trio picked out and dropped off each of the early breakaways until they neared the lead group, and three kilometres from the summit, Kashechkin accelerated, taking no-one. With no more than seven riders in the groupe maillot jaune and a third from Liberty Seguros, it was left to Davitamon-Lotto and Illes Balears to chase who had two - Cadel Evans and Chris Horner - and two - Alejandro Valverde and Joaquin Rodriguez - apiece. The thing was, they either couldn't or didn't; Cadel Evans tried, but it was a similar scenario to that of yesterday, with the advantage firmly in favour of Liberty. 13 kilometres from the finish, the peloton was 1'26 in arrears and as a consequence, Kashechkin had become the maillot jaune virtuel, while three remnants from the early break - Garate, Parra and Moreau - were 22 seconds behind. Parra Pinto had also done enough to wrest the mountains jersey from the shoulders of local rider Roger Beuchat; an unpopular change, but a deserved one. However, the long descent and flat run-in to Sion did nothing for Kashechkin's chances, particularly when the peloton caught the trio in front of them. Combined with a stiff headwind, the Kazakhstani's lead sadly withered away until he was caught by a Davitamon-Illes Balears-led peloton inside two kilometres to go. The slightly uphill finish proved perfect for Valverde, claiming his fifth win of the season ahead of Alexandre Moos (Phonak) and Cadel Evans (Davitamon-Lotto). And significantly, moving within six seconds of the race lead. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by AFP Photo
