60th Tour de Romandie - PTSwitzerland, April 25-30, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - April 26: Payerne-Payerne , 169.0kmDavitamon delivers on McEwen's promiseBy Anthony Tan in Payerne Today in Payerne, Robbie McEwen delivered on his promise, taking the stage everyone knew he could and should. And in doing so, the 33 year-old Queenslander lifted a massive weight off the shoulders of his Davitamon-Lotto team, who, until this day, had spent the entire season in Europe without a major victory. "I've been telling the boys since yesterday that this was our only chance for a sprint and I wanted to win it, because I've had a hard time since, well, since I crashed and broke my rib on the fifth of March [at the Three Days of West Vlaanderen - ed]," he told Cyclingnews. "I rode Tirreno with a broken rib - basically rode everything with my rib broken and just couldn't go 100 percent - but now I'm finally back. This is really my first race in almost a month, so this is a good comeback race and I knew this was my only chance." Continued McEwen: "I wanted to have a sprint and go for the win. When Konyshev had 10 minutes, I went back to the boys and said, 'Right, we're going to start [chasing] now.' The boys rode right at the front until the last two k when other teams come and took over, but I just kept my position, stayed in the first three coming into the sprint and I hit out from 200 [metres to go]. I'm not sure even who came second, but anyway, I won pretty easy in the end 'cos nobody got next to me," he said, a certain air of confidence returning to his voice. McEwen added that despite riding over the final kilometres twice before the finish, he wanted to scout the parcours a few times before the stage. "I wanted to see it at ease, cruise over it and see what it was like and see where I was going to hit out from before we hit that hill. I didn't want to get swamped from behind because I lost a couple of sprints in Portugal like that, so I just decided I was just going to go, and when I hit out, I hit the front right at that little dogleg as we hit the uphill finish. From there, it was less than 100 metres to go." Overnight leader Paolo Savoldelli (Discovery Channel) had no problems in maintaining his race lead, albeit a slender one, less than a second separating he and Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears). And after picking up a two-second sprint bonification out on the road today, Française des Jeux's Bradley McGee moved within two seconds of the race lead, and by chance, he too is on equal time with today's stage winner and fellow Australian. Asked what's next for him, McEwen replied: "Ah, just ride through the next few days for race condition. I'm going alright, but I just need that extra bit of conditioning to go to the Giro with... hopefully it'll be dry tomorrow." Stage 2 - April 27: Porrentruy-Porrentruy Tomorrow starts and finishes at the race's northernmost point in Porrentruy, also the longest stage at 171,2 kilometres. With two Category 1 climbs (km 56,2 and km 157,7) along the way and a total 1,810 metres' elevation, April 27 is one of the most difficult days in the saddle - maybe one for those often-aggressive Liberty Seguros guys, like Jörg Jaksche or David Etxebarria. Savoldelli shouldn't have any problems in the hills, saying today he's been doing specific training in the mountains in order to be ready for the Dolomiti at the Giro d'Italia. How it unfoldedMild, sunny conditions greeted the 162 riders left in the 60th edition of the Tour de Romandie, the small market town of Payerne hosting both the start and finish for today's opening road stage. With Roy Sentjens (Rabobank) and Koldo Gil Perez (Saunier Duval-Prodir) abandoning yesterday - no easy feat in a 3.4 kilometre prologue! - Euskaltel-Euskadi's Gorka Gonzalez became the third rider to exit stage left prior to the 13:35 start. La parcours du jour consisted of three loops of varying length and three tours of Payerne: the first measuring 51,5 kilometres without any particular difficulty; the second 40 kilometres long with one Cat.3 climb at Lucens after 76,5km; and a final large loop of 77.5 kilometres, again with one Cat.3 climb in Sassel (km 123,4) and by far the most picturesque, hugging the banks of the Lac de Neuchâtel before returning to Payerne. The official start took place at twenty minutes to two and it was a very leisurely one at that, the peloton rolling along at 30 kilometres an hour for the first 10 kilometres. At km 14, a move by Mickael Delage (Françasie des Jeux) and Pierre Drancourt (Bouygues Telecom) proved unsuccessful, but 12 kilometres later, Dimitri Konyshev's attack was, the LPR rider leaving the peloton's grasp at km 26. The one and only Continental team to have received a wildcard in this year's race, Team LPR had so far shown they had come to Switzerland to compete; in yesterday's prologue, Swiss local Andreas Dietziker earned himself a top-ten performance, and now their Russian rouleur was displaying his worth with a massive 11-plus minute advantage after 60,7 kilometres covered. As mentioned in our Latest News bulletin today and depending on who you spoke to, Davitamon-Lotto were hungry - actually, ravenous - for their first big win on 'home soil' (home being Europe), choosing to place all their bets with sprinter Robbie McEwen. So it was going to be a tough ask for 'Kony' to hold off the peloton and at 40 years-old, the evergreen Ruskie would need to call on all his 17 years' experience if he were to force an upset. Over the first GPM at km 76,5, Konyshev was still way out in front, cresting the climb of Lucens with nine minutes' advantage over Phonak's Steve Zampieri and Ivan Ramiro Parra Pinto from Cofidis. At km 113,7, however, which signalled a 100 kilometre escape so far, the LPR rider's efforts began to take their toll, his advantage at this point just six and a half minutes. Things looked more ominous for the lone breakaway when Davitamon-Lotto began motioning their troops inside the final 50 kilometres. The increased speed of the peloton also created some anxiety within, and not long afterwards, T-Mobile's Bernhard Kohl had a rather spectacular crash into the fields but was thankfully unhurt, and rejoined his companions with a few extra grass stains. At a quarter to five in the afternoon, Konyshev crested the day's final categorised climb in Sassel (km 123,4), his lead now hovering at around three minutes. Behind him, the peloton gave more than a few spectators a brief scare when half the field experimented with a little cyclo-cross, cutting their travels a few metres short around a hairpin bend. Maybe the bunch were preempting the wet-weather finish, for the skies over Payerne had begun to turn nasty and rain and thunder could be heard in the distance. The gloomy temps also coincided with Konyshev's chances: 27 kilometres from home, just 45 seconds separated him with le peloton. Sure enough, at km 146 and after 120 kilometres out on his own, the Russian met his destiny with the now rapidly-moving peloton. Just three kilometres later on the last small climb of the day, Frenchmen Cédric Vasseur (Quick.Step-Innergetic) and Patrice Halgand (Crédit Agricole) escaped, the names of Moos, Etxebarria, Halgand, Anton and Voeckler tacking on a few hundred metres down the road. But with Davitamon driving, it wasn't to be, and with two kilometres to go, McEwen still had three men up front: Horner, Van Summeren and Roesems. Coming past the flamme rouge, Liquigas also wanted a piece of the action, cutting in on the train and seemingly intent on foiling the Belgian team's plans with their man Enrico Gasparotto. Recalled McEwen, "When they got swamped with about 2k to go, I sort of followed [Daniele] Bennati a little bit and through the corners, I didn't follow anyone, really... I just made sure I was near the front and followed Bennati again because he was in second position; I just waited for the moment." Despite being left on his own on the rain-soaked roads, McEwen kept his cool and good position, sitting pretty in fourth wheel. And having reconnoitred the final kilometres twice earlier this morning and twice during the stage, the Gold Coast speedster hit out with 200 metres to go to hold off fast-charging Milram man Mirco Loreznzetto and Lampre-Fondital's Daniele Bennati, with Gasparotto fourth. "I've finally been training my sprint in the last weeks and felt when I went, I had heaps of power and I could've kept sprinting for another 150 metres past the finish," McEwen said.
