Haedo does it in Georgia too

J.J. Haedo made quite a name for himself at the Tour of California in February. But the more difficult climbing at the Tour de Georgia put a damper on the Toyota-United sprinter -- until today. Haedo's teammates drove the pace into Alpharetta to allow him to sprint past everyone for the final stage win. "I didn't feel that great today," said Haedo. "But the team did so much work for me that I had to do something good for them!"

Haedo had to come around some fast sprinters in Gord Fraser (Health Net-Maxxis) and Fred Rodriguez (Davitamon-Lotto), driving all the way to the line to take the win. "It was a drag race... I had to go all the way to the line!" he said. "It is hard to sprint with these guys. When you have Rodriguez, Hunter, Fraser you go to the sprint and it is not 100% that you will win. You just have to go with what you know of how you feel and go with what you have in the moment."

Gord Fraser was the defending winner of this sprint last year, but was without his man Greg Henderson who is healing a hip at the moment. This time he used the strong Australian Karl Menzies, who did the work in the final kilometer. "In the last 500 meters we got our act together and did a good sprint," Fraser explained. "Karl Menzies took me into 200 meters to go. I figured I would jump earlier and hopefully take it all the way. My legs were not quite as good as last year and they need to be very good to beat J.J."

Sprint leader Fred Rodriguez came in fourth, betting on the wrong train in the final kilometers. "I followed Popo on Discovery's train but that was the wrong train to be on. So, it cost me some energy to get on J.J.'s wheel." Rodriguez is part of a growing crowd who thinks that Haedo has a shot at the big show. "Haedo is a talented guy," he said. "I think he has what it takes to go to Europe and he might be successful there. The only thing he needs to work on is his endurance."

Race leader Floyd Landis (Phonak) only ran into one problem today, flatting on the finishing circuits and taking a wheel from a teammate. "It is always a little bit chaotic in the circuits," said Landis. "The guys did a great job helping me out but it wasn't so fast that I wouldn't be able to get back on."

With the race in the bag Floyd's team switched gears to enjoy the wins. "Winning three stage races this year -- I won three out of four races now," Landis said. "Tour of California and Georgia were goals of mine and I am really happy with it. I am very satisfied."

Ever the professionals Discovery Channel did the appropriate thing and slowed the field down. "I saw Landis flat and I road as fast as I could to the front and told the guys to slow down," said Tom Danielson. "I was in the same position as he was last year. I wouldn't want to worry about the stress of someone attacking you in your chief moment. I wouldn't want someone to attack me in that situation and there is no way I would ever do that to anyone else. The G.C. race was yesterday."

"It is always easy to look back and say I could have done this or that," said Johan Bruyneel. "It does not work that way. Cycling is not a science you try to be the strongest on the road. We tried to follow the plan and Floyd was stronger than we expected and we have to accept that. We have no regrets."

One thing that Bruyneel is taking away from this race is the strong performance by Yaroslav Popovych, who finished fifth today after a strong ride up Brasstown Bald. "Popovych is definitely a rider we expect a lot from for the Tour," Bruyneel said. "He has proven to be a great rider for the Tour. I see his progression going on. We want to bring him in an ideal position to start the Tour."

Their team also rode into town with the KOM jersey on the back of Jason McCartney who also showed he is ready for his ride in the Giro. "Hopefully I can recover," McCartney said of his week of sickness and racing. "My weight is good and I feel good. I'm not sick anymore -- I was sick at Paris-Nice. I am coming around and from what I hear Savoldelli is riding well -- and Danielson is obviously riding well, so I think the Giro will be good for us." But McCartney knows he is going there to work. "My full intention is to protect Savoldelli, so no personal ambitions at all."

The most aggressive rider of the stage was TIAA-CREF's Will Frischkorn, who managed to attack into the final circuits out of the day's break. But all day he had a watchful eye on him, as his father, Carl Frischkorn, was driving a medical moto in the break. "It's fun to see him out there in the race," Will said. "There aren't too many races that he can make it to. He said he would [draft us] for Clif Bars but I didn't have any handy!"

Floyd's Phonak teammates are clearly giving the thumbs-up to their team leader. "It is nice to work for a guy like Floyd," said Aurélien Clerc, who managed to squeak out a third after the tough work this week. "In the circuit when you do a lot of work like that for Floyd when he flatted it gives you energy too. That is how I was able to sprint today."

"Between now and the Tour I will take a week off," said Landis. "I will focus on the Tour from now on in training. We'll do a couple of the tour stages in June."

How it unfolded

Today's final stage of the Tour de Georgia was a departure from the previous years. While a little shorter, the stage included one rather significant category three climb as opposed to the usual all downhill run in from the north Georgia mountains. Leaving Cumming, which is only a fifteen minute drive from the race finish in Alpharetta, the race turned back north and headed towards Dawsonville.

At the end of the neutral start an attack came on a fast descent out of town by many, including Wes Hartman (TargeTraining.) Small groups like this came and were summarily reabsorbed before a group of nine got away. This included Caleb Manion and Nick Reistad (Jelly Belly,) Peter Mazur (Prodir,) Mike Sayers, Tim Johnson and Jeff Louder (Health Net-Maxxis,) Phil Zajicek (Navigators Insurance), Sean Sullivan (Toyota-United), Frank Pipp (TargeTraining), Allan Johansen (CSC), Danny Pate, Craig Lewis and Will Frischkorn (TIAA CREF) Scott Zwizanski (Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada) and Leonardo Scarselli (Quick Step-Innergetic).

Even though there were three ProTour riders in the break, the majority of the riders in the break were domestic pros, taking advantage of a lull in the race for the GC. And most of the pace was being set by riders like Caleb Manion and Health Net-Maxxis.

The break built more than a five minute gap as they reached the climb up Burndt Mountain. While not a killer climb it at around eight percent grade, it was rather long and consistent. On the start of the climb, riders from TIAA-CREF took over and pushed the pace to try to drop some sprinting weight from the group.

Half-way up it was Zajicek who made the first move, which was answered by Scarselli, Lewis and Manion. Over the top it and down the other side the group reformed and held more than six minutes on the Phonak-led field. The break moved along nicely again as the road turned south back to the Cumming for a $2,500 sprint.

As the break began to get closer to the city limits the field began to turn up the gas to bring the gap to a more respectable limit. Once again it was Caleb Manion spotted setting the pace in front of the break with help from TIAA-CREF and Health Net-Maxxis. It was quite clear that some of the riders were sitting on with instructions from their team -- the ones hoping for a bunch sprint.

One rider Sean Sullivan (Toyota-United) came back to the Mavic car for some rear wheel service and commented that the climbing over Burndt Mountain was a little hard with the heat today. Luckily for him he is on a team with a fast sprinter so his instructions were to sit on for the ride.

Nearing Cumming again the time gap was falling and the sprint was on for the guaranteed cash. Mazur jumped but was not sure it was the correct spot, he told Cyclingnews after the race. Lucky for him it was and he earned $2,500. The speed increased with this and the break split apart for a while. Two groups formed and the gaps fluctuated.

Frank Pipp (TargeTraining) led the chase in the second group almost alone as many members of this group had riders here had teammates up the road. Eventually the group came back together but a few riders were shed, including Lewis and Zwizanski. Davitamon-Lotto was on the front now and did most of the work bringing the gap down.

Multiple attacks came as the group neared the finishing circuits in Alpharetta, with Pate, Johansen and Louder making some noise. Onto the circuits it was Frischkorn and Louder who managed to get a gap as the field bore down on the rest of the break. But the two increased their lead to more than two minutes as they approached the finish line showing six laps to go.

"When we first attacked we thought it would just be for show," said Frischkorn. "Lauder was driving it, he was an animal. And for a couple of minutes we thought we might have it, with Floyd having his flat. But with all that horsepower behind they will get you."

The field now had both Davitamon-Lotto and Toyota-United working at the front, with Health Net-Maxxis waiting in the wings to see if Louder would stay away. As the two passed the field in the opposite direction on each lap, the teammates would cheer with Mike Sayers yelling the loudest. "Yeah, he is quite a cheerleader," said Gord Fraser. "The team did everything perfect today -- in the break and at the finish. I did the sprint as best I could and just got beat by a stronger rider."

Each lap saw the gap come down, as usual. And with two to go the final members of the original break were reeled in. A few lone attempts by Marco Pinotti, joined by Danny Pate. The two did not last long though. A final attempt was launched by David Zabriskie, but the fast-moving field made quick work of that.

Into the finish it was Navigators and then Discovery Channel setting the pace, working for Popovych. Health Net-Maxxis took over on the front with Karl Menzies looking after Gord Fraser, who was followed by J.J. Haedo.

Like last year it was Gord Fraser jumping first, trying to get a boost before the rise at the end. But on his wheel J.J. Haedo punched past like he did in California.
