Lightning strikes again for Popovych and Discovery in Rome
Acton nearly survives four hour solo break

Two years ago Lance Armstrong pulled off a surprise sprint win on the challenging finishing circuits in Rome, and nearly won again here last year. This year, Armstrong paid a surprise visit to the team, visiting with them before the stage. And at the finish, his former teammate Yaroslov Popovych (Discovery Channel) notched another win for the team in the city of Rome, but this time the deed was done by attacking alone in the final kilometer on the steep Clock Tower Hill while the rest of the field hesitated, waiting for someone else to do the job. "It was not Discovery's plan to attack on the climb -- but when we were moving along I felt I could do what I did," Popovych explained. "I talked to my director and told him I felt good to attack and he said to go for it and that is how it happened to be today."
What enabled Popovych to launch his winning move was a hard effort by four Discovery Channel riders during the final lap. "Discovery took over and they drove the last half lap," said Juan Jose Haedo (Toyota-United.) "They drove really hard and then when we got into the steep part, Popovich attacked. He wasn't that far away, but when we were at the top it was Menzies, Freddie, myself and Grajales looking at each other hesitating, and that's when he went away. If I would have gone, they would have chased me and if Freddie had gone, we would have chased him."
Popovych held on to his 100 meter gap from the top of the climb to the finish, with Juan Jose Haedo and Fred Rodriguez (Davitamon-Lotto) fighting for second place. "I knew I should have closed the gap all the way and not rely on the other teams to do that," said Rodriguez. "Everyone was getting ready for the sprint so no one wanted to do the work to chase. It was a fast finish."

Coming into Rome, the crowd was rooting for a lone solo rider, Alejandro Acton (TargeTraining,) who had spent nearly 150 kilometers out in front of the field. The Argentinean pedaled alone through the wind and rain, similar to last year's epic stage four. Acton was able to make more than ten minutes on the field that was content to lounge most of the day -- as well as aided by the torrents of rain that slowed the field.
"When we approached the first sprint I was feeling good and I won there," said Acton. "I kept going after that and I was feeling good. My director told me to relax, but I kept riding hard because I was feeling good. Once I got the second sprint I thought I would try to keep going to see how long I can be in front. I had a very big gap and so I thought I would continue to try to get to the circuits."
Eventually, Davitamon-Lotto took charge of the field and upped the speed which quickly dissipated the gap to Acton. "We did most of the main effort to bring the break back today," said Rodriguez. "Phonak, CSC, Lotto all helped chase the break." Phonak also joined in the chase, as well as a couple of CSC riders.
"Ten minutes is a very big gap, too big to let it get any bigger," said Phonak's director René Savary. "Once we started to chase other teams like CSC and Lotto helped us a lot. Our first objective was only to reduce the gap, not to catch the break rider. Once the gap was reduced we knew that the other teams were going to ride hard coming into the circuits to set up their sprinters and to go after the KOM."

After catching Acton in Rome the field kept the pace high coming to Clock Tower for the first ascent which also counted as the first KOM climb of the Tour. Kirk O'Bee (Health Net-Maxxis) was the first to jump and powered over the hill in first place. "It was in the back of our minds," explained O'Bee regarding his attack on the KOM. "Karl Menzies had mentioned because he thought the jersey looked nice! Otherwise it was because we were at the front and I took advantage of the opportunity."
O'Bee assured Cyclingnews that he was going to taunt Menzies with his pretty peach jersey, but probably for only a day or two. "I don't think this is going to be a priority, especially for myself -- this is not a jersey I am looking forward to defending! I think now we are looking for stage wins with the time trial and the last day with the sprint finish."
From that point on it was a rotating effort from teams trying to control the front of the race, including Davitamon-Lotto, Health Net-Maxxis, Toyota-United and Phonak. Then Jelly Belly's Matty Rice attacked on the second-to-final lap, and held a slight advantage. "The last lap and a half I was with Chris Baldwin and my guys -- they were chasing Matty Rice and I was behind Freddie," said Haedo. Across the line, Rice was caught and Toyota-United pushed the pace a little longer before the Discovery train took over, launching Popovych to the win.
Fred Rodriguez retains his lead in the sprint classification by taking a couple of points during the intermediate sprints. "I have the sprint jersey and know we will work to keep it but intermediate points and go for more stage wins. My biggest competition is Lars Michaelsen."
Similar to two years ago, the stage winner also becomes the race leader as the Tour de Georgia heads into the important stage three time trial. However, it is unclear as to whether Popovich will become the designated leader of the team, or if the defending champion Tom Danielson will remain the plan. "The time trial is a good test for me," Danielson told Cyclingnews. "I have been working really hard on my TT and I would like to do well. There are better time trialists than me here but I wont lose as much time. Then when we get to the hills we are going to go after the leaders jersey. Brasstown Bald is my main goal -- it is a steep climb and a good one for me that is where I hope to do well."

With Lance here for the rest of the week, Danielson will certainly have the support to do well. "I am indeed mentoring the team for the Tour de Georgia," Armstrong told Cyclingnews. "I was there for the Tour of California and I will be there for the Giro d'Italia. I am not necessarily giving tactical advice because Johan will be in the car -- I am here to support the team and watch the race."
"I think having Lance here is great for the team morale," Danielson said. "Even if we just ride harder because he is around."
Stage 3 time trial ventures outside Georgia
Stage three of the Tour de Georgia is set on a totally new course and marks the first time the Tour of Georgia has ventured outside of Gerogia (See stage map & profile). It is the stage that the GC riders will be looking to to set themselves up for the overall.
Last year, Floyd Landis took the win by 19 seconds from David Zabriskie (CSC), only to lose it a couple of days later to Tom Danielson on Brasstown Bald. This year Zabriskie is confident he can take the win and keep the jersey for the remainder of the Tour.

The course starts in Chikamuaga and climbs over Lookout Mountain before crossing the state line into Chattanooga, Tennessee. 39km in length, the race of truth will be a good indicator of which GC rider has the form to take our the overall tour.
Last year Danielson proved however, that the time trial is not all important. He lost exactly a minute on Floyd but was able to make it up on the steep section of Brasstown Bald. This year Danielson told Cyclingnews that he's been working on his time trial and he believes he has improved considerably. "I won't win tomorrow," he said, "but I think I can go come in a lot closer than last year.
