62nd Tour of Poland - ProTPoland, September 12-18, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - September 18: Jelenia Góra – Karpacz, 61 kmNew leader in TdPBy Daniel Marszalek in Karpacz Orlinek Luxembourgois Kim Kirchen (Fassa Bortolo) won the morning's seventh stage of the 62nd Tour de Pologne, disputed on a short 61 kilometres course from Jelenia Góra to Karpacz Orlinek. Kirchen beat Danilo Di Luca (Liquigas) in a tough uphill finish, getting his revenge for this year's Flèche Wallonne, where he was outsprinted by the Italian on the Mur de Huy. Third place went to young Swede Thomas Lövkvist (Francaise des Jeux). Overnight race leader Pieter Weening (Rabobank) came just 8th, losing nine seconds to the stage winner. Therefore Kim Kirchen became the new race leader before this afternoon's deciding time trial. How it unfoldedAfter two tough days with awful weather, the remaining riders must have welcomed Sunday's chilly, but sunny morning in Jelenia Góra with great relief. The first mountain sprint at Karpacz Górny, which was named after Joachim Halupczok (amateur world champion in 1989, who died prematurely in February 1994), was won by Swiss Rubens Bertogliati (Saunier Duval), who at this moment was in a breakaway with his compatriot Beat Zberg (Gerolsteiner), Spaniards Jesus Hernandez, Daniel Navarro (both Liberty Seguros) and Frank Schleck (Team CSC) from Luxembourg. On a descent to Sosnówka, there was some regoupment with a new five man group now at the front, among them Navarro and Schleck plus TdP 2002 winner Frenchman Laurent Brochard (Bouygues Telecom), Ukrainian Volodymir Gustov (Fassa Bortolo) and the leader in the mountains competition, Bartosz Huzarski (Intel-Action). The only intermediate sprint in this stage was in the centre of Karpacz centre (km 36,5), and was won by Navarro ahead of Huzarski and Schleck. They were all caught on the second ascent to Karpacz Górny with Spaniard Carlos Barredo (Liberty Seguros) taking first place on the line situated near the wooden Wang church, which was specially brought to Karpacz from Norway in the 19th century. On the second descent to Sosnówka, Slovenian Janez Brajkovic (Discovery Channel) attacked from the still 50 strong peloton and was allowed a couple kilometres of freedom. Still, he was swallowed by the bunch just before the entrance to Karpacz. Croatian Vladimir Miholjevic and Italian Andrea Noè' were doing great work for Di Luca at the front with five Dutchmen from Rabobank including race leader Pieter Weening sitting just behind the Liquigas riders. When Noè's turn on the front was over, Michael Boogerd (Rabobank) - working for Weening - upped the pace. Spaniard Ruben Lobato (Saunier Duval) made a jump from the melting group but his action was short lived. With 1500 metres to the finish, Lobato's compatriot David Arroyo (Illes Balears) tried his luck but he also was soon caught. With 600 metres to go, it was Marek Rutkiewicz who accelerated from the leading group, but he was quickly followed by Weening and Di Luca. At the hardest part of the final kilometre with 300 metres before Orlinek, he started his dash for the line, immediately making a gap over all his opponents. Still, Kim Kirchen (who already was fourth overall in the TdP 2001) chose the best place to start the sprint. He went very strongly from fifth or sixth position and came around Di Luca with less than 150 metres before the end. Kirchen managed to reach the finish line with a few seconds advantage on Di Luca and Lövkvist, and most importantly, with clear gap to Weening. Before this afternoon's 19 kilometre long time trial, Kirchen now leads the race with an 11 second advantage on Weening and 0'33 on Di Luca. Lövkvist fourth at 0'41, Dekker is fifth at 0'42, and Boogerd sixth at 1'01. The best Polish rider Marek Rutkiewicz is still 11th with a 2'34 deficit to Kirchen.
