62nd Tour of Poland - ProTPoland, September 12-18, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - September 17: Piechowice – Karpacz, 153 kmWeening triumphs on toughest dayBy Daniel Marszalek in Karpacz 24-year old Dutchman Pieter Weening won the sixth stage of the 62nd Tour de Pologne in Karpacz Orlinek and took the race lead after some impressive performances from the Rabobank riders. A very strong Kim Kirchen (Fassa Bortolo) was second on the day with just four seconds deficit. After a tough and rainy day in Karkonosze, only six men remained contenders for the overall victory. On this short list, there are big stars like Michael Boogerd (Rabobank), Danilo Di Luca (Liquigas) and two 21 year-old youngsters Thomas Dekker (Rabobank) and Swede Thomas Lövkvist (Francaise des Jeux). How it unfoldedThe hardest stage of the TdP started under heavy clouds and with rain which started to pour just after the riders left the neutral start in Piechowice at 12:04. The first of the two intermediate sprints on the day was situated in Cieplice (km 4) with the always active German Robert Forster (Gerolsteiner) taking first place ahead of Estonian Andrus Aug (Fassa Bortolo) and Forster's teammate, Dane Frank Høj. After a few initial attempts to split the field, the first group that broke away from the pack for a bit longer was a trio with Dutchman Joost Posthuma (Rabobank), Basque Iker Flores (Euskaltel), who was the last man on GC standings this morning, and last year's best climber of the TdP, Przemyslaw Niemec (Miche). During the first ascent to Karpacz Górny, Niemec dropped his two companions and won the first of six mountain sprints ahead of Spaniard Jesus Hernandez (Liberty Seguros) and Marek Rutkiewicz (Intel-Action) leading the bunch. On the way down to Sosnówka, first Niemec, and then Hernandez was caught, and a new breakaway was formed with Swiss Rubens Bertogliati (Saunier Duval), Basque Gorka Verdugo (Euskaltel) and KoM competition leader Bartosz Huzarski (Intel-Action). Huzarski was ranked 40th on GC with a 1'07 deficit to leader Luca Paolini (Quick Step), and was a danger for race favourites. The second mountain sprint at km 47 was won by Huzarski ahead of Bertogliati and Verdugo, while the break had around minute's advantage on the peloton. Their gap to the main bunch grew through the second 21.7 km-long lap, reaching 3'50 at maximum and 3'20 when the riders passed Karpacz Górny for the third time at km 69. Although this time, we already had a decimated group of favourites with around 20 riders, including Paolini and ProTour leader Danilo Di Luca (Liquigas). During the third lap around Karpacz, the advantage of the leading trio dropped to just one minute, which allowed young Spaniard Carlos Barredo (Liberty Seguros) to jump from the pack and join the three early leaders. Bertogliati was the fastest across the line in Karpacz Górny at km 90 ahead of Verdugo, Barredo and Huzarski, with the leader's group just 10 seconds back with Dutchman Pieter Weening (Rabobank) in the lead. The attacking quartet was swallowed by the favourites' group, but race leader Luca Paolini was already a minute behind his main rivals. Soon after this regroupment, Ukrainian Yaroslav Popovych tried to break away together with Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis), Dutchman Thomas Dekker (Rabobank) and Italian Paolo Valoti (Domina Vacanze), but they were allowed only some 10 seconds advantage. Chavanel managed to win the second intermediate sprint in Karpacz ahead of Dekker and Popovych, but soon this quartet was caught. Shortly after that, Spaniard Jose Luis Rubiera (Discovery Channel) countered the move of his teammate and broke away alone. The Spanish climber reached the fifth mountain sprint at Karpacz Górny with 0'41 advantage on the group of favourites led by Cezary Zamana (Intel-Action) and Italian Andrea Noè' (Liquigas). After descending to the flatter part of the course, Noè' was doing hard work for his team leader at the front of the chasing group, clearly reducing Rubiera's advantage. Di Luca made good use of it with a strong attack on the penultimate ascent of the stage, breaking away and taking with him the strong Kim Kirchen (Fassa Bortolo) from Luxembourg and young Dutchman Pieter Weening (Rabobank). They reached the start of the last lap at Orlinek with few seconds advantage on counter-attacking Rutkiewicz, and 15 seconds on a group of nine riders with American Bobby Julich (Team CSC), Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis), Swede Thomas Lövkvist (Francaise des Jeux) and two Rabobank riders, Michael Boogerd and Thomas Dekker, among others. At Karpacz Górny, there were three riders at the head with Kirchen winning the last mountain sprint ahead of Di Luca and Weening, while the chasing group was reduced to just seven riders with Rutkiewicz now in it. On the slippery descent to Sosnówka, the two leading groups linked together and a little later, those ten riders were also joined by a few more. Rutkiewicz tried to break away on the descent, but was caught at the bottom of it. On the undulating road to Milków, Chavanel tried his luck and got a gap, but Kirchen, Weening, Spaniard David Arroyo (Illes Balears) and Slovenian Gorazd Stangelj (Lampre) caught him just before the entrance to Karpacz. On the last time up to the Orlinek, Kirchen forced the pace too fast for all of his companions except for Weening, while at the back Di Luca's acceleration dropped most of the riders in the chasing group with only Boogerd, Dekker and Lövkvist capable of follow the Italian. This quartet soon caught and dropped first Arroyo and Stangelj, and then also Chavanel. Nevertheless, because of the hard work at the front by Kirchen, they were not able to catch the leading duo. In the tough two-man finish at Orlinek (with the last 300 metres averaging 12%), Weening, who sat on Kirchen's wheel for the last couple of kilometres, was not surprisingly faster than the Fassa Bortolo rider. He not only took the stage win, but thanks to four seconds gap on Kirchen at the finish line, the young Dutchman also became the new race leader. Rabobank has a strong position with Boogerd and Dekker now also ranked in the top five on the general classification.
