63rd Paris-Nice - ProTourFrance, March 6-13, 2005Main Page Results Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - Monday, March 7: Etampes - Chabris, 186.5kmA crash favours Boonen's win, Dekker takes the leadBy Jean-François Quénet in Chabris Stage 1 in Paris-Nice can often create more damage than people would generally expect. Last year, it was because of CSC putting the hammer down in a crosswind section. This year, the 41 second gap between the 23 men away and the main pack was a result of a crash just within 10km to go. The crash made life slightly easier for Tom Boonen and his Quick.Step team, who were well placed at the front when it happened and were able to keep him out of trouble until the finish, when he won the stage comfortably from Luciano Pagliarini (Liquigas) and Jaan Kirsipuu (Credit Agricole). "The road was pretty narrow and some guys were riding on the dirt on the side," second placed Pagliarini explained. That's how the crash happened." Almost the whole Liberty Seguros team, including the defending champion Jörg Jaksche, went to the ground. It inspired their team manager Manolo Saiz to make this philosophical comment: "What a spectacle!" The crash took away from the front group GC contenders like Sylvain Chavanel, who was also involved in the crash, Franco Pellizotti, Thomas Lövkvist, Gilberto Simoni, Cadel Evans, Michael Rogers and Lance Armstrong, although the six time winner of the Tour de France didn't look like racing Paris-Nice for the overall win since he wore leg warmers during the prologue. The win of "the race to the sun", whose first stage was actually held in much better conditions than expected with a dry climate and an average temperature of 6°C, is traditionally decided by a small margin. That's why every bonus sprint is more important in this event than in any other of the cycling calendar. Erik Dekker must be aware of that. He competed in the two hot spot sprints, finishing second in the first one behind Fred Rodriguez and winning the bunch sprint for third place later on, which gave him 3 seconds bonus, just enough to take the yellow jersey from Jens Voigt. The two men are now equal on time but Dekker has an advantage of 34 hundredths of a second from the prologue. "During the time trial, I surprised myself because I've been ill for almost all of the early part of the season," the Dutchman commented. "Last week I even had the feeling that I'd never be good for the classics this year, and suddenly the form came back. Today was my chance for taking the lead. I don't know if I'll be able to win Paris-Nice. I don't think I'll be good enough for Friday's stage up to the Mont Faron. This climb suits Jens Voigt better than me, he won up there at the Tour of the Mediterranean last month. Even the best Erik Dekker struggles on the Mont Faron." Voigt may have lost the yellow jersey, his CSC team looks in an even better situation than after the inaugural time trial. None of their five top riders missed the front group at the end. Voigt, Vladimir Gussev, Kurt-Asle Arvesen, Bobby Julich and Franck Schleck are all in the top 12 on GC, which gives the Danish team many options for the coming days. As Paris-Nice is heading South, stage 2 to Thiers may be affected by some route changes due to the snow in the center of France. Alternative itineraries have been issued by the race organisation, so it's unsure how many of the six climbs will be visited. The riders will still sign on in La Châtre - where Cédric Vasseur took the yellow jersey in the 1997 Tour de France - but they will start either at km 94, km 144.5 or km 163 of the initial 191km long course. If the third possibility becomes a reality, it may remind Bjarne Riis how short the stage to Sestrières was when he took the yellow jersey - for good - in the 1996 Tour de France. Stage 1 was the only dead flat stage of the week, and it was no surprise that Tom Boonen was the winner. The gradient of the finishing line was exactly what he prefers. "1 to 3 percent is the best for me, but I think Oscar Freire and Max van Heeswijk are still better than me when it's 4 or 5 percent," he explained to Cyclingnews on Saturday. Freire and Van Heeswijk aren't competing here. "I dedicate this victory to my best friend Dieter who died last week aged 27 while skiing in Germany," Boonen said after winning in Chabris. "On the day of his funeral, I promised his dad to win a stage of Paris-Nice for him." Boonen made it in the absence of Robert Hunter (Phonak), who was another hot favourite in case of a bunch sprint. The South African crashed at km 81 and was taken to the hospital in Châteauroux for a little while. He went out with six stitches. "It could have been more but the doctor wanted to keep the leak instead of risking an infection," Hunter declared. "I didn't hurt anything but I have a big cut in my right arm. It's a U. The whole thing was all open! It was a stupid crash actually. Someone from Euskaltel-Euskadi went off, everyone stood on their brakes. I was about to pull my foot out of the pedal when someone hit me from behind. I fell down on my right hand side and landed on my elbow." The springbok is tough and he wanted to ride Tirreno-Adriatico starting on Wednesday. The whole staff of Phonak including team owner Andy Rihs, team manager John Lelangue and directeur sportif Jacques Michaud went to the headquarters of the race asking for the special permission to line him up in Italy. ASO okayed it but the UCI refused, because of riders in the past who pulled out from a race, pretending to be sick, then they went to another race. "But I need the racing before Milan-San Remo!" an extremely upset Hunter reacted. "Does that mean my next race is the Three Days of De Panne?" he questioned. "I'm not a cheat, I was injured, I pulled out for going to the hospital." "For us it's a huge loss," a sad Michaud added. Hunter is out but Pagliarini is in. The Brazilian who was known for winning stages in Le Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia during his years with Lampre has gone one step forward this year. He came second to Boonen in Chabris. "But I'm not happy with that, no," he said. "I was on Boonen's wheel when I got blocked in with 400 metres to go, then I found myself in 8th position with 100 metres to go, I passed everyone except Boonen who was already away from all of us. I've been second a few times this year already, behind Alessandro Petacchi in the GP Etruschi, but I desperately want a win. I'm obviously racing at a higher level now, I'm happy at Liquigas, it's a nice team." He's their sprinter on the French front while Mario Cipollini is winning on the Italian one. The other event of stage 1 was a long breakaway with Fabien Sanchez of la Française des Jeux and Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano from Liberty Seguros. "It was our plan to try and do something," the French pursuiter (6th at Athens Olympics) said. "We want to show ourselves and leave our leaders (especially Philippe Gilbert, 7th on GC) quiet in the bunch. Personally, I feel myself better up the road than inside the bunch but I didn't believe too much in our success. If I didn't believe at all, I'd better try nothing but I still hoped for something unusual to happen in the bunch. At first, I didn't recognise who I was away with, but then, I saw the name Igor on his gloves and I also heard his name through radio Tour. He also asked me 'what's your name' and he said 'we're friends', which meant we wouldn't attack each other. It was nice to ride with a former yellow jersey of the Tour de France."
