57th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré - PTFrance, June 5-12, 2005Main Page Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - Thursday, June 9: Tournon-sur-Rhône - Le Mont Ventoux, 182 kmVino the King of VentouxBy Anthony Tan On the queen stage of the Dauphiné Libéré, T-Mobile's Alexandre Vinkourov has found himself the King of Mont Ventoux. The 31 year-old Kazakhstan rider, already a winner of this year's Liège-Bastogne-Liège, today demonstrated his versatility and abundance of strength to outride all the favourites and conquer the Giant of Provence. Brilliant rides were also done by Jose Gomez Marchante (Saunier Duval-Prodir) and Wim Van Huffel (Davitamon-Lotto), the young Belgian having already shown his class with an 11th place overall at the Giro d'Italia. Lance Armstrong (Discovery Channel) was dropped with around 10 kilometres to go, but clawed his way back to the lead group and rode to a gutsy fourth place finish, 37 seconds behind Vinokourov. The best of the rest - Floyd Landis (Phonak), Andrey Kashechkin (Credit Agricole) and overnight leader Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) - all finished within five seconds of each other, between 41 and 46 seconds back, with Leipheimer doing enough to retain his race lead over Armstrong, who is now 21 seconds behind the maillot jaune. Vinokourov is now third overall and in striking distance, just five seconds behind Armstrong, while Landis (Phonak) sits fourth, 47 seconds off the race lead. How it unfoldedWith the favourites all placed within two minutes of each other after yesterday's time trial in Roanne, today was going to see the first - but no means final - shake up on the classement général at the 2005 Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré. Temperatures at the start in Tournon-sur-Rhône were almost perfect: 20°C and a moderate 30km/h wind blowing from the north, with expected gusts of up to 60km/h. However, that was nothing compared to the conditions awaiting the riders atop Le Mont Ventoux, otherwise known as the "Le Géant de Provence". 153 riders took to the start; big Swede Magnus Backstedt (Liquigas-Bianchi) deciding to call it quits after yesterday. Naturally, with just the one Alpine climb at the end, plenty of riders were looking for a head-start more than a stage win, and Rafael Casero (Saunier Duval-Prodir) and Damien Nazon (Crédit Agricole) the first to leave the peloton, albeit very briefly. Because of the high average speed, it wasn't until towards the end of the first hour's racing a group of seven escaped: Nicolas Vogondy (Crédit Agricole, 66th GC), Daniele Becke (Iles Baleares-Caisse d'Epargne, 59th GC), José Gutierrez (Phonak, 21st GC), Jorg Jaksche (Liberty Seguros-Würth, 58th GC), Devis Miorin (Liquigas-Bianchi, 112th GC), Constantino Zaballa (Saunier Duval-Prodir, 55th GC) and Elia Rigotto (Domina Vacanze, 130th GC) the ones who got away. By km 54, the septet had extracted a 2'40 lead over the peloton, but with the first hour completed at a 55,6 km/h average, they were working overtime. Jose Luis Rubiera (Discovery Channel) had what appeared to be a minor spill, but with the aid of two of his team-mates, the Spaniard found his way back in the bunch. Entering the feed zone (km 93), the break had forged another minute and a half's lead, now up to 4'10. Phonak's José Gutierrez was the best-placed of the seven, 2'57 down on race leader Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) at the start of the day, and was therefore sitting in the maillot jaune virtuel. However, unlike two days ago, the teams holding GC riders weren't so blase about controlling the break, and after two hours in the saddle, Rabobank and Discovery Channel sent a few of their men up front, which saw the gap reduced to a more manageable 2'50. Not long afterwards, a large group of 27 riders containing Andreas Kloden (T-Mobile) and Nicolas Jalabert (Phonak) tried to get away, but the teams of the lead riders weren't having anything of it, and they were brought back to the peloton after no more than 10 minutes. At the sprint prime in Cairanne (km 126.5), taken out by Vogondy (Crédit Agricole), the break's lead had gone back out to 3'45. Still, with the 21 kilometre Giant of Provence ahead of them, the seven were going to need a lot more than that. The second sprint in Baaume-de-Venise was an equally lacklustre affair, this time won by Zaballa (Saunier Duval), and was more significant for the fact that it signaled 40 kilometres left to race, the gap to the peloton now 4'15. From there, the only way was up, and shortly into the climb (though not the climb proper), Gutierrez (Phonak), Jaksche (Liberty Seguros) and Zaballa (Saunier Duval) gradually rode away from their companions - but there was no time to say adieu, as the peloton were only 1'50 behind them. Back in the bunch, the action had started early, and it was David Moncoutié (Cofidis) who took off first, seemingly unsatisfied with the pace Christophe Moreau (Crédit Agricole) was setting at the head of the peloton, which was enough to see Roberto Heras (Liberty Seguros) in trouble. A little further up front, Zaballa was dropped, leaving just two - Gutierrez and Jaksche - at the 10km to go mark, who were 1'25 ahead of the remains of the peloton; Lance Armstrong and Manuel Beltran (Discovery Channel), Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner), Andrey Kashechkin (Credit Agricole), Floyd Landis, Santiago Botero and Oscar Pereiro (Phonak), Denis Menchov (Rabobank), Wim Van Huffel (Davitamon-Lotto), Jose Gomez Marchante, Rafael Casero and Nicolas Fritsch (Saunier Duval), Alexandre Vinokourov (T-Mobile), David Arroyo (Illes Balears) and Inigo Landaluze (Euskaltel-Euskadi) all still in there. By this stage, Moncoutié (Cofidis) had been absorbed. However, Armstrong (Discovery Channel) and Fritsch (Saunier Duval) were in difficulty, losing a few lengths to le groupe maillot jaune, but clawed their way back 10 minutes later. Speaking of the maillot jaune, Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) was looking comfy at the head of the group that had now eaten up and spat out Gutierrez and Jaksche, but the catch instigated a new counter by Belgian climbing sensation Wim Van Huffel (Davitamon-Lotto). At five kilometres to go, the front group contained 11 riders - Armstrong, Vinokourov, Kashechkin, Landis, Leipheimer, Jaksche, Menchov, Moncoutié, Fritsch, Landaluze and Gomez-Marchante - but a attack by the latter rider saw Menchov and Landaluze dropped, leaving just nine. As the slopes steepened, Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner), Vinokourov (T-Mobile) bridged to Gomez Marchante (Saunier Duval) and distanced themselves from a group containing Armstrong (Discovery Channel), Landis (Phonak), Moncoutié (Cofidis) and Kashechkin (Credit Agricole), although the trio were still half a minute behind Van Huffel, with the Armstrong group a further 10 seconds back. But then it became Levi's turn to let go, leaving Vino and Gomez Marchante out in front, who made the junction with Van Huffel at three kilometres to go. Leipheimer soon fell into the cradle of the group being driven by his former leader, Lance Armstrong, 27 seconds behind, with Landis and Kashechkin also hangin' in there. Passing underneath the flamme rouge, Van Huffel saw his super day over, as Vinokourov and Gomez-Marchante upped the tempo ever so slightly. 300 metres before the line, Vino attacked his Spanish companion, and moments later, the stocky Kazakhstan rider found himself a glorious victor, 1,909 metres above sea level. Stage 5 - Friday, June 10: Vaison-la-Romaine - Grenoble, 219 kmWith six categorised climbs and about a kilometre of flat road along its 219 kilometre-long parcours from Vaison-la-Romaine to Grenoble, some may find tomorrow's stage even harder. Maybe one for Axel Merckx (Davitamon-Lotto) or Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Telecom). PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by AFP Photo
