57th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré - PTFrance, June 5-12, 2005Main Page Results Stage Details Previous Stage Stage 7 - Sunday, June 12: Morzine-Avoriaz - Sallanches, 128 kmInigo's race to Luze, and theirs to winGeorge jumps to stage win #2By Anthony Tan in Sallanches At the start of the day, 28 year-old Iñigo Landaluze (Euskaltel-Euskadi) had everything to lose. His more favoured rivals Santiago Botero, Levi Leipheimer and Lance Armstrong were stronger riders and possessed stronger teams. But with a difficult though by no means extreme parcours, they all needed to take the race to the Basque if they wanted to win. However, it was only Botero and Leipheimer who really wanted it bad. With Discovery Channel teammates George Hincapie and Yaroslav Popovych up the road, coupled with Lance Armstrong's primary motivation for doing the Dauphiné, the lack of unity within this group worked to Landaluze's favour. And when he did get dropped, just as he did yesterday, he didn't panic; holding firm, holding tough, and doing enough to claim the biggest victory of his five-year professional career. "We made a mistake to let Landaluze get away; I'm not afraid to say that," said Leipheimer, who was speaking about Friday's fifth stage that finished in Grenoble, won by Axel Merckx. At the start of that day, the day after Ventoux, Landaluze was 4'30 behind the 31 year-old American, who was the race leader at the time. However, by the day's end, Landaluze found himself part of a successful 13-man breakaway that took nine and a half minutes out of the peloton, and as a consequence, he became the new maillot jaune. Yes - with Landaluze finishing 10th overall at the 2004 Dauphiné Libéré, coupled with his second place in the mountains classification at this year's Tour de Romandie, Leipheimer et al. should have watched this man far more closely. Nonetheless, Levi seemed content with his third place overall, and learned a valuable lesson before cycling's main event, the Tour de France. Together with Leipheimer, yesterday's stage winner and eventual second overall Botero threw everything he had at Landaluze. Today, the 32 year-old Colombian came within 11 seconds of his second ProTour stage race victory after his comeback win in Romandie, but as he said to Cyclingnews at the start of the day, he was facing an uphill battle. "It won't be easy, especially with these kinds of mountains, but we'll try," said Botero in Morzine, not sounding overly confident. Certainly, the seven 2.5 kilometre ascents of the Côte de Domancy didn't play to his strengths, but like Leipheimer, Botero can take plenty out of this race and into the Tour, Phonak's big objective of the year. "Each day, I've been riding a little better. I think I'm at 100 percent [fitness] - I'm in very good shape. In the Tour, I hope that I will be in the same shape that I'm in now, and in the front of the general classification," he said. Asked about the lack of time trial kilometres in the '05 Tour, his specialist discipline, Botero answered: "Ah, it's not good for me, but what can you do? Nothing. But this is the reason why I'm training a little bit more in the mountains." Someone that's also been spending plenty of time in the mountains is today's winner George Hincapie. After a surprise prologue win one week ago, today the 31 year-old American pretty much rode a 100 kilometre, two-man team trial with team-mate Yaroslav Popovych, impressively holding off a motoring chase group three times the size to make it Dauphiné stage victory #2. "I would say I'm right on track," said Hincapie to Cyclingnews when asked about his form going into the Tour. "I haven't raced for six weeks before this, so it's good to come here and ride hard, and try and get some good race fitness. No matter how hard you train, you can't train as hard as you race, so it's good to do this hard race. "The course is super-hard here - maybe too hard!" laughed laid-back George. "It's probably harder than some of the Tour stages - so it's good training. I'm trying to get ready for the Tour, so I'm just happy with the way things are going." So is Lance. How it unfoldedOnce again, the final day of the 57th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré began in perfect weather: at the early afternoon kick-off in Morzine, it was 18 degrees Celsius with 5-10 km/h breeze blowing from the southwest. While timings were tight at the top of the leaderboard, riders aiming for another rung or two up the ladder needed to make things happen. It wasn't going to be like yesterday, where the parcours created certain selections; today, riders like Botero, Leipheimer, Armstrong and Vinokourov would need to do that themselves. Once again, the start continued in a similarly aggressive vein to that of previous days, Tuesday's stage winner Samuel Dumoulin (Ag2r) first to try his luck before a group of 15 and then 13 broke clear at 14:25, to make a front group of 28, Dumoulin included. It was a large group - too large and too dangerous to let go - but they managed to gain 30 seconds a kilometre before the summit of the Côte de Saint-Sigismond (km 35) before it was all back together save two riders, Discovery Channel's George Hincapie and Yaroslav Popovych managing to stay out in front. It was an interesting move, sparking a 20-man counter containing Armstrong, Vinokourov, Moreau, Gilbert, Botero, Sastre, Leipheimer, Tankink, Dumoulin and Goubert. However, the descent of the Saint-Sigismond was considered too dangerous a place to forge their advantage, and they too found their way back to the bunch. After 50 kilometres and approaching the first of seven ascensions of the Côte de Domancy, Hincapie and Popovych had 1'15 on the peloton that had split again, the names of Gilbert, Dumoulin and Tombak present in the group behind, and later joined by Nicolas Vogondy, Frédéric Finot, Christophe Edaleine and Sylvain Calzati. The second time over the Côte de Domancy, the Discovery duo were roughly two minutes in front of the peloton and 1'25 ahead of José Gomez-Marchante (Illes Balears), the Spaniard sitting 11th on GC at the start of the day, 4'09 behind Landaluze. Back in the peloton, numerous counters were splitting the bunch to pieces, with Manuel Beltran (Discovery Channel), Andrey Kashechkin (Crédit Agricole) and Constantino Zaballa (Saunier Duval) bridging up to Gomez-Marchante after the third time of Domancy to form a chase group of four, 1'55 behind Hincapie and Popovych. A further 2'20 in arrears was Chavanel, Goubert and Zandio, with the peloton now at 2'40, having just completed their fifth of eight passages in the finish town of Sallanches. Into the third-to-last climb of Domancy, George and Popo were storming, 2'05 ahead of Beltran, Kashechkin, Gomez-Marchante and Zaballa, who were joined by Goubert and Zandio on the climb, Chavanel unable to go with them. But the Frenchman wasn't the only one having trouble. When the remains of the peloton came to this point, the maillot jaune of Landaluze, among numerous others, found themselves in difficulty, and cresting Domancy, a select group of 16 formed - Beltran, Mancebo, Botero, Leipheimer, Menchov, Moncoutié, Bruseghin, Codol, Van Huffel, Canada, Mazzoleni, Landaluze, Goubert, Vinokourov, Armstrong and Zandio all in there. Landaluze got back on but not for long, as an attack by Mancebo on the penultimate ascent of Domancy saw him and a few others gone for good. By the top, Hincapie and Popovych were 1'10 ahead of the group containing Armstrong and Botero and 1'35 on the maillot jaune. With Landaluze only 49 seconds ahead of Botero at the start of the day, it was touch and go, and nail-biting stuff. The final time over the climb, and with five kilometres to go, all bets were on the fast-finishing Hincapie, with he and his fellow Discovery companion still 50 seconds out in front. Behind them, Botero went ballistic, gaining 38 seconds on le group maillot jaune by the top of the climb before bombing the descent - but as he did yesterday, the über-cool Landaluze didn't panic, and with the aid of Eddy Mazzoleni (Lampre-Caffita) and Marzio Bruseghin (Fassa Bortolo), this is where their deficit stayed by the end of the day. In a textbook two-man sprint finish, the powerful Hincapie was rewarded with his second stage win of the race, easily distancing himself from his Ukrainian team-mate. And just to rub it in, Lance Armstrong made it a Disco 1-2-3, winning a six-man sprint to the line 22 seconds later, the Texan looking pretty happy with the result after Vinokourov did the same to him the day before.
