57th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré - PTFrance, June 5-12, 2005Main Page Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - Saturday, June 11: Albertville - Morzine-Avoriaz, 155 kmBotero back in business; Landaluze still leadsBy Anthony Tan in Morzine-Avoriaz The word 'epic' is often overused in cycling, but for today's penultimate stage of the Dauphiné Libéré, there really is no other word. After a short lull following his comeback victory at the Tour de Romandie, 32 year-old Colombian Santiago Botero (Phonak) has found himself in top form once again. While the Colombian's TT win three days ago in Roanne was strong though not convincing, today the man from Medellin left a class group of riders on the steepest slopes of the much-feared climb of the Col de Joux-Plane, then descended like a bat out of hell to drop David Moncoutié (Cofidis) and fly away to a second - and this time dominant - stage victory, rocketing six places up the GC into second overall. The day also gave plenty of indication of the ominous upward progress of defending Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong. Riding within himself the entire race, the 33 year-old American appears to be growing ever-stronger towards his July 2 countdown, where he will ride La Grand Boucle for the final time. Seventh on the stage and holding onto his fourth-place overall, it was a pragmatic Armstrong that greeted the press after the stage: "I haven't raced a lot of big mountains this year, so I'm still lacking a little bit of punch," he said. "The Tour is a long way; what counts is July 24." [The final day of the Tour de France - ed.] Former race leader Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) was also solid, finishing with Armstrong's group and holding his third spot on the classement general, while Botero's team-mate Floyd Landis was well inside the hurt box on the Joux-Plane, finishing four minutes back and slipping to seventh on GC. No where near as spectacular as Botero but equally courageous was the maillot jaune of Inigo Landaluze (Euskaltel-Euskadi). Finding himself totally isolated on the final climb, the Spaniard did not panic, 'doing a Savoldelli' by going his own tempo and limiting his losses. Landaluze eventually finished 4'17 in arrears, but more importantly, he still holds onto his race lead by 49 seconds, which should be enough to see him the overall winner in Sallanches tomorrow. How it unfoldedWith the tables unexpectedly turned the day before, today was really the last opportunity for the pre-favourites to exact revenge if they wanted to become the ultimate winner of the 57th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré. Only 155 kilometres long, but it had all the markings of a brutal day in the saddle. An entrée of three Cat. 1 climbs to begin with - the Col de la Forclaz, Col de la Croix-Fry and Col de la Colombiére - before the main meal less than 10 kilometres from the finish in Morzine, the hors categorié Col de Joux-Plane. Pundits lest not forget: the Joux-Plane was the scene of Armstrong's famous case of hunger knock at the 2000 Tour de France, where he almost lost the race to Jan Ullrich - so we were expecting LA to treat this stage very, very seriously. Lousy weekend weather predicted a few days ago was thankfully not the case, with the 12:45 start in Albertville a very pleasant 22°C, and a just a few swirls of wind that didn't even register on Météo France radar. Just the one rider was missing from the start, Enrico Franzoi from Lampre-Caffita, making it 141 to start the day - but very unlikely the same number would finish... Yesterday's successful break won by Axel Merckx and Samuel Dumoulin's win a few days before sparked renewed interest from the opportunists, and it took just 15 minutes for an eight-man move to go clear. In the break were: Ivan Gutierrez (Iles Baleares, 38th GC), Juan Miguel Mercado (Quick.Step, 103rd GC), Rémy Di Grégorio (Française des Jeux, 43rd GC), Joost Posthuma (Rabobank, 71st GC), Massimo Giunti (Fassa Bortolo, 19th GC), Pierre Drancourt (Bouygues Telecom, 109th GC), Enrico Gasparotto (Liquigas-Bianchi, 78th GC) and Sylvain Calzati (Ag2r, 53rd GC). 20 minutes later, Andriy Grivko (Domina Vacanze) and José-Cayetano Julia (Iles Baleares) launched a counter-attack, but the boat had long departed and they spent the next two hours in a fruitless chase before giving up. Alberto Contador was another rider who gave up, but for him, the situation was far more serious. Attempting to get something out of his wheel, Contador's fingers came to grief, and the 22 year-old Liberty Seguros rider was evac'd to hospital, suffering serious cuts to his hand. Ag2r's Sylvain Calzati imposed a strong rhythm on the first climb of the day, the Col de la Forclaz, which saw their advantage tick over the seven-minute mark and Drancourt (Bouygues Telecom) cramping and already in trouble, leaving just seven. By the top of the climb, the gap was 10'20 and the best-placed rider in the break, Massimo Giunti (Fassa Bortolo, 19th on GC, 10'12 behind Inigo Landaluze), was in the maillot jaune virtuel, but only by a handful of seconds. Five minutes behind, Grivko (Domina Vacanze) had caught Drancourt (Bouygues Telecom) while Julia (Iles Baleares) was a further minute back. 9'20 from the lead group, another seven had escaped, those names being: David Arroyo (Iles Baleares), Nicolas Jalabert (Phonak), Allan Davis (Liberty Seguros), Frédéric Bessy (Cofidis), Juan-Antonio Flecha (Fassa Bortolo), Maryan Hary (Bouygues Telecom) and Samuel Dumoulin (Ag2r). Not surprisingly, it was Giunti (Fassa Bortolo) who was doing plenty of the pacemaking on Col de la Croix-Fry, no doubt spurred on by wayward thoughts of the maillot jaune. At the crest of this second Cat. 1 climb, it was still the same seven, 8'15 ahead of the peloton; those names again: Ivan Gutierrez (Iles Baleares), Juan Miguel Mercado (Quickstep), Rémy Di Grégorio (Française des Jeux), Joost Posthuma (Rabobank), Massimo Giunti (Fassa Bortolo), Enrico Gasparotto (Liquigas-Bianchi) and Sylvain Calzati (Ag2r). Just to keep things confusing, another nine - Moreau, Arroyo, Botero, Pereiro, Moncoutié, Weening, Bruseghin, Flecha, and Astarloza - left the peloton on the Croix-Fry, while Grivko, Drancourt and Dumoulin were somewhere in between them and the break, leaving three groups out in front. Shortly before the climb of the Col de la Colombière (km 78), Lance Armstrong (Discovery Channel) made a brief though unexpected stop to adjust his saddle, but with the aid of his team-mates, he soon rejoined the bunch. Ahead of Lance, Maryan Hary (Bouygues Telecom), part of the second chase group, crashed heavily on the descent of the Colombière, and was immediately taken to hospital at the direction of race doctor Gérard Porte, who informed race radio the Frenchman was suffering from lumbar (back) trauma. After the descent into Cluses (km 109), the seven chasers had just 45 seconds' advantage to the next group behind, now 11 strong and containing the names of Moreau, Arroyo, Mancebo, Botero, Pereiro, Moncoutié, Weening, Bruseghin, Flecha, Goubert, Astarloza and Dumoulin. There was also action aplenty behind, as a select five-man group that included Armstrong and George Hincapie (Discovery Channel), Floyd Landis (Phonak), yesterday's winner Axel Merckx (Davitamon-Lotto) and Jorg Jaksche (Liberty Seguros) formed at km 116, not long before the start of the Cat. 4 Côte de Châtillon. Without any team-mates, the maillot jaune of Inigo Landaluze (Euskaltel-Euskadi) was somewhat isolated, but provided he could keep it together, the Basque had time on his side. Alexandre Vinokourov (T-Mobile) was also with him and thanks to the efforts of his team-mates, they made it back on just before they commenced the dreaded Col de Joux-Plane. Sensing danger, Ivan Gutierrez (Iles Baleares) attacked the lead group 30 kilometres from the finish, while his six former companions found the company of 13 other men, as the group behind them made the junction. But once that junction was made, Tour of Romandie champion Santi Botero (Phonak) and David Moncoutié (Cofidis) took off three kilometres into the climb's savage slopes, flying past Gutierrez and splitting the bunch to pieces. Mancebo (Illes Balears) and Moreau (Credit Agricole) were never going to catch them, but did what they could to limit their losses. The group now behind them read like a who's who of cycling, as Armstrong (Discovery Channel), Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner), Vinokourov (T-Mobile), Landis, Pereiro (Phonak) and Kashechkin (Credit Agricole) joined forces, some three minutes behind the lead duo, Landaluze a further 30 seconds back. However, 10 kilometres from the top of the Joux-Plane, Vino and Pereiro left this chase group in their wake, but Armstrong bided his time in bringing them back and dropped Landis in the process, his fellow American looking in a bad, bad way. By the top of the Joux-Plane (km 143) and with just 12 kilometres left to race, it was still Botero and Moncoutié. Trailing two and a half minutes behind the lead pair was le groupe Armstrong, who, by this stage, had just four others for company - Vinkourov, Arroyo, Gomez Marchante and Leipheimer. Incredibly, it was on the descent where the 2002 world TT champion made his winning move. By the finish in Morzine, Botero had 23 seconds to think about his victory salute, but all he could muster was a very tired-looking one-armed punch before both arms were raised, his energy totally spent on the road behind. After Moncoutié, Mancebo, Moreau and Bruseghin, Vinokourov sprinted hard to take sixth place, a couple of seconds in front of an exhausted though satisfied Armstrong, while the maillot jaune Landaluze held tough to finish 4'17 behind Botero, and thus keep his race lead by 49 seconds. Stage 7 - Sunday, June 12: Morzine-Avoriaz - Sallanches, 128 kmThe final day is one for the spectators, with the race cresting the Cat. 4 Côte de Domancy seven times in the final 70 kilometres, before the stage and race draws to a close in Sallanches. Timings are tight at the top of the leaderboard, so the top five riders on GC will need to keep their wits about them, and as the last two days have shown, anything can happen. But most probably, it's another one for those adventurers who still have the legs. Philippe Gilbert (La Francaise des Jeux) or Michael Boogerd (Rabobank) would make likely protagonists.
