20th Tour de Beauce Bell - 2.2Canada, June 14-19, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4b - June 17: Saint-Georges downtown Criterium, 60 kmNavigators' long good Friday; Davidenko takes critBy Matt Hansen in St. Georges Vassili Davidenko made it a very successful day for Navigators Insurance, taking the stage after a breakaway managed to stay clear of a Symmetrics-led field. The break never got more than 24 seconds, eventually finishing just 17 seconds ahead. Svein Tuft rode regally in seventh position for most of the day behind his Symmetrics teammates and will continue to wear yellow tomorrow for Quebec's circuit race. How it unfoldedOnce again, the weather was agreeable…relatively speaking. Although the temperature was still not exactly summer weather, the course stayed dry. Had there been rain, there was a general consensus amongst the riders that the race should be either nullified or cancelled. The course was a tricky one in the wet, and almost all the favourites contended that the yellow jersey should not be won or lost because of an accident on a slick corner in a fast crit. The officials were unwavering, saying that the race would go on no matter what. Luckily, it never became an issue. In fact, it was almost perfect timing: the rain began just after Davidenko threw his arms up for the win. A few early moves started off the action with Canada's Max Plaxton, Health Net's Doug Ollerenshaw and Tim Johnson (Jittery Joe's - Kalahari) looked promising, getting a gap of 10 seconds on the field. Johnson had a slight problem when he broke his seat post and needed to switch bikes, but was put back in the move. As the race progressed, more riders bridged up including including Health Net's John Lieswyn, Charles Dionne (Canada), Justin England (Health Net), Navigators' David O'Loughlin and Davidenko. But the move came back just after points sprint with 19 laps to go. A counter launched with 17 to go, once again with Navigators riders present, the ubiquitous Davidenko and MTB star Plaxton, Canadian National team rider Dom Perras, Health Net's Mike Sayers, Italpasta - Transport Belmire's Brandon Crichton, and Mark Walters, among others. A few more riders would bridge up-Health Net's Mike Jones and Cyclingnews.com's Glen Chadwick-making the breakaway total 11. Chadwick said getting into the move made sense. "It was safer to be away, easier. Guys were undercutting the corners, the speed wasn't as steady going in and out. I figured I should try and make it up there, see if we could make a few extra seconds." Navigators had a good situation as well, with Walters pushing the move to gain ground. "Mark was driving the break for two reasons," Navigator's Ed Beamon explained. "First, for Vassili, so he could try and take the win. But it was good for us because it put Symmetrics and Health Net on the defensive. But Symmetrics rode well. Should be interesting in the next few days." Cesar Grajales tried in vain to make it a Navigators threesome, but couldn't close the gap. The gap rose and fell with the break working well on some laps, and worse on others. Riders like Walters and Chadwick kept on hitting the front to keep the move away, all the while as Symmetrics kept a fast tempo. As Symmetrics Eric Wohlberg explained, there was some of friction in the field as they rode at the front for Tuft. "The euro teams kept swarming us as we kept the tempo up. It was pretty surprising, the lack of respect for the leader's jersey. It's something that you expect at some local jitbag race, not an UCI international event." Tuft echoed Wohlberg's words, but had high praise for his team. Having a breakaway hovering at a gap of 25 seconds was perfect for Symmetrics, on a trying course like today's. "The team worked well today. It was a hard day for them but they were steady. I don't understand why some of the teams were riding the way they were-it was pretty frustrating. But we let the break sit there just ahead, and since there were none of the bigger classification threats in it, it worked well. Much easier than to let Navigators counter us over and over again." For the most part, Symmetrics was quite consistent-with almost all of the team pulling through, apart from the halfway point where young rider Christian Meier took a spill on the fourth corner after the downhill. "I just took it too hot, riding on Pinner's wheel. But I'm ok. Just lost a little skin." Perras tried a last gasp attempt on the last time up the climb, but didn't get more than a few seconds. The break came to the line and Davidenko sprinted ahead, taking the win by two bike lengths.
