Third stage a lucky charm for O'Loughlin

A rain-soaked, shortened stage saw Navigators finally take a stage win, with Irish champ David O'Loughlin just stay ahead of a charging field, as his teammate Vassili Davidenko sprinting for second in a select group of 33 riders. Quebec rider Dom Rollin fought hard in the stage, finishing with the leaders and will wear yellow in the 27km time trial tomorrow.
How it unfolded
The 180km stage was shortened to 142km so the entire caravan drove from the original stage start at St. Joseph to the new start at Beauceville. With rain making conditions on the first KOM even worse - the climb had large holes and gravel due to roadwork, coupled with a nasty wooden bridge beforehand - there was not much protest from the field. Once again the temperature was under ten degrees Celsius; the clouds opened up with drizzle, and riders emerged at the very last possible moment from their warm team cars, donning long sleeves, raincoats, overshoes and long-fingered gloves.
Before the stage, there was a mix of both ambition and dread for the day's events. After yesterday's epic day, the list of GC contenders was small: only the top 15 riders were within even a few minutes. One of the riders in yesterday's lead group was young revelation Brandon Crichton (Italpasta - Transport Belmire), who at 20 surprised many with his 7th place and the stage, and inheritance of the best young rider's jersey. "Today should be another tough day and I my plan is to keep the red jersey," he said. "How? I will just follow the big guns, stay at the front and survive." Another Canadian, Andrew Pinfold joked that he wasn't sure which one of his Symmetrics teammates he should support - there were three to choose from in the top 15. "Well right now since they are all up there I'm just not sure whom to work for. Maybe since I'm 18 minutes down I should just try and make it all back today and go for the lead myself. Yeah, that sounds right on."

Dominique Rollin, who took the yellow jersey after winning yesterday, said that his small Quebec team was still up for the task ahead: defending the lead. Resembling a similar situation yesterday, where the smaller Volkswagen - Trek team worked beyond expectations for Martin Gilbert, Rollin said anything was possible. "We will do what we can - ride a little tempo when we can, but mostly show ourselves at the front. I'll do my absolute best to keep my lead for Friday's time trial."
Rollin wasn't the only one thinking ahead. With the double stage day looming - a TT in the morning and an evening criterium, followed by a tough Quebec circuit Saturday - some of the other contenders hoped to play it cool and save it for those crucial stages. Cyclingnews.com's Gilbert De Weerdt said that the plan was just that: "Another day to stay at the front, make the moves but not do too much. The race will be won or lost in the next few days."
After yesterday's tough stage, Canada's Dom Perras was on the offensive from the get-go, attacking several times and getting a gap along with Amore e Vita Beretta's Kimmo Kananen. Although the day was cold, many riders seemed keen to warm themselves up by riding hard. For Perras, it was a sign his legs felt good. "I cracked a bit at the end yesterday so I was disappointed. I rode well the entire race, making the lead moves, bridging up when there were gaps, and it was just the last hill where I didn't have it. That's racing. But yeah, today the legs felt good so I hope I can pull out a good result in the next few days - maybe on the Quebec circuit, that would be great." Another rider who seemed eager to test his legs was Jittery Joe's - Kalahari rider Tim Johnson, whose Tour de Beauce Bell has been relatively quiet. Even after quite a few tough stretches of climbs and false flats where several smaller groups formed, the peloton regrouped, with the help of the Health Net and Quebec team. After the stage, Rollin would praise his riders, saying that "They all really rode well, especially Alexandre Nadeau. It was great. I was on the rivet a few times but I made it to the end."

Navigators tested the field, riding hard over the first KOM, splitting the field. But the pack regrouped again for another flurry of attacks - and with 40km to go, a serious move came from Johnson, who being a former 'cross star might have just been enjoying the foul weather, and at one point had 40 seconds on the field. Perras made another attack and tried to bridge, but once again, the Navigators-led field was too aggressive and brought him back, and then Johnson.
A slew of attacks came from the peloton in the final 10km - initiated by Health Net and Navigators, and ultimately, as the pack approached the two finishing circuits, O'Loughlin and Doug Ollerenshaw broke clear. The duo was just ahead of the field - which split twice due to the pace - and with a few strong pulls by Pinfold and Canada's Max Plaxton, it was down to the wire with one lap to go. As the line approached the Irishman put a small gap after the short climb and Ollerenshaw was just caught as the pack swarmed him. O'Loughlin managed to stay clear by a few bike lengths and Davidenko took the sprint over Amore e Vita Beretta's Domenico Passuello.
The race continues tomorrow with the 27km test against the clock.
