10th Telekom Malaysia Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, January 28-February 6, 2005Main Page Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - January 29: Kangar - Kepala Batas, 171.6 kmPanaria's B1 and B2 unstoppableBy Anthony Tan and Shane Stokes in Kepala Batas After just two stages, Ceramica Panaria-Navigare's Graeme Brown and Guillermo Bongiorno are proving unstoppable, today reversing their stage placings to take the team's second 1-2 in succession. Much has been said of the unusual strategy of taking two sprinters to the line, some believing a certain rift exists between the two fast-men, but on the sun-drenched road to Kepala Batas, the Orange Crush pulped their adversaries in a dominating, daring display of all-out sprinting. "One of our advantages is that we have two good sprinters in our team. The tactics are that Ruben [stays] on my wheel; if I go too early, then he wins," said Brown about the team's atypical sprint strategy. Brown, still the overall race leader, was also gracious in his praise of the team, dedicating his yellow jersey to the entire team. "I think I can talk for Ruben as well today, for the win as well as the yellow jersey, which goes to all the boys on Panaria," he said. "They rode extremely well - they probably did 160k on the front - so hats off to them... I think if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be in yellow." While the top two spots on the leaderboard were largely unchanged, one of the protagonists in the two-man, day-long breakaway, Takashi Miyazawa, has moved up to third spot on GC after claiming all three sprint primes. Brown and Bongiorno have extended their lead over Russian Oleg Grischkine in the points classification, while mountains leader Kristian House is a little less than confident of holding onto his spotted jersey. "Tomorrow really is the first day with real climbs, so I'm not going to run along and attack or anything like that," said House. "If I'm in a little group, I'll give it a shot, because there's a couple more flattish stages to hold onto it for a few more days, so I'll just see how it goes." It wasn't surprising to hear that no question was asked about Brownie's chances of holding onto his leader's jersey, who stressed that both he and Bongiorno are looking for as many stage wins as possible rather than the overall sprint title - which, based on current form, will probably go to either one of the two anyway. "Our objective is stage wins. For us, we're in a good position in that if I make a mistake like today, Ruben can win, and vice versa - so we're in a really good position; we've both got really good legs." "I just went a little early; I had really good legs in the sprint and felt awesome - I was just accelerating and I was thinking, 'I don't where that's coming from!'" laughed Brown about his sudden reversal of form and fortune. "I was pretty happy that I even got second, so considering my form last week, I've come up well." And naturally, no press conference would be complete without a typical Brownie answer when asked about the furnace-like temperatures today. "I reckon I saw my team-mate [Lancaster] go back around 10 times, and he was getting around 10 or 12 bidons at a time... but I don't know where he was puttin' them!" he quipped. How it unfoldedFollowing yesterday's opening stage on the island of Langkawi, the race entourage transferred by ferry to the Malaysian mainland in advance of stage two. While the sun and heat were making their usual appearance, the morning was less humid than yesterday, providing the riders with some relief. However the temperature was soon to skyrocket, reaching over 40 degrees during the stage and causing umpteen bunch-car-pick up bottle-bunch trips for weary domestiques. Three kilometres after the start in Kangar a group of 13 riders went clear and built a lead of 14 seconds. These were quickly reeled in by Team Barloworld-Valsir. At kilometre seven, Bridgestone Anchor rider Koji Fukushima repeated his early attack of yesterday; while he was hauled back almost straight away, his bid was followed by a counter by team-mate Takashi Miyazawa and Fallanie Ali (Proton T-Bikes). Working well together, the Asian duo gained 1'15 on the Ceramica Panaria-led main bunch by km 15. With a total distance of 171.6 kilometres in store, the peloton was content to let them build their advantage, with the gap climbing to 5'40 by the 30 kilometre point, and then to its maximum of 10'15 seconds some 46 kilometres later. Miyazawa led Ali across the line for the first hot-spot sprint at Menara Alor Setar (km 50), with Colombia Selle Italia's Daniele Di Biase and Barloworld-Valsir's René Joergensen nabbing third and fourth several minutes later. Shortly afterwards, Great Britain rider Paul Manning and Sergio Ghiasalberti of the Domina Vacanze team hit the deck in the feed zone, but both riders were able to rejoin the race. The day's second hot spot sprint at 87.2 kilometres fell (once again) to Miyazawa ahead of Ali. Yellow jersey Graeme Brown reinforced his race lead when he took third and what would prove to be an important one-second time bonus, while Camille Bouquet ((Mr Bookmaker.com - Sports Tech) was next across the line. At this point, the two leaders were still 8'45 ahead, but the tide was starting to turn. Sensing another possible stage victory, the Ceramica Panaria-led bunch began to turn the screw and ramp up the speed behind. With sixty kilometres to go the gap was down to 6'27, and it continued to fall as each kilometre ticked by. Ali took the prime win ahead of Miyazawa at the summit of the category 3 Bukit Selambau climb, with Team Barloworld-Valsir's Rene Joergensen third across the top. With 25 kilometres remaining, things really started to look bleak for the Asian duo. The bunch were just one minute and 40 seconds down at this point, and while Miyazawa and Ali stayed clear long enough to settle the third hot-spot sprint in that order - Dennis Kraft (Action) and Najmee Wan Mohammad (Proton T-Bikes) took third and fourth - they were finally hauled back by the Ceramica Panaria - Navigare-led peloton with 16 kilometres to go. The Fukushima brothers Shinichi and Koji (Bridgestone Anchor) then took advantage of a slight lull to go clear along with Iran's Houssein Askari. The Asian trio remained up front for approximately ten kilometres, delighting the spectators lining the roadside, but they too were destined to be caught. That paved the way for a Ceramica Panaria-Navigare one-two for the second day running, although this time it was Bongiorno who proved quicker. Oleg Grishkine (Navigators Insurance) was third, repeating the finishing position he achieved just over 24 hours earlier. Stage 3 - January 30: Gerik - Tanah Merah, 172.5 kmTomorrow sees the first serious mountains of this year's race, with the riders tackling the category one ascents of Gunung Pilong (580 metres) after 28.7 kilometres and then, 40.7 kilometres later, the 1070 metre climb of Titwangsa. Although there is slightly over 100 kilometres from the top of the latter until the finish line in Tanah Merah, those in an opportunistic frame of mind have the chance to build and maintain a decent lead over this type of terrain. Even if a regrouping does take place before the line, the two hills will give a valuable pointer to the identities of those likely to challenge for the overall win.
