10th Telekom Malaysia Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, January 28-February 6, 2005Main Page Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - February 2: Kuala Berang - Cukai in Terengganu, 152 kmSempre (Always) PanariaBy Anthony Tan & Shane Stokes in Cukai With Ruben Bongiorno and Graeme Brown going 1-2 four times in the last six days, the Tour de Langkawi could quite easily be renamed the Tour de Panaria based on the team's performances thus far. And with at least two more sprint opportunities to follow, organisers may have to seriously consider a name change after another dashing display of sprinting prowess today in Cukai. "Today was a really good ride by the team, as we've done every day from the first stage at Langkawi," said Brown after his 26 year-old team-mate took the sixth stage of the race to make it two stage wins apiece for the race's most formidable sprinting duo. "We've been very attentive, and we've chased down everything we've needed to chase down and made sure it's a bunch sprint; we've got the two fastest sprinters here, and each sprint stage we've come first and second. Obviously, we want to keep it together for the sprints - that's our objective and we've achieved that - so we're obviously very happy for the team." When Cyclingnews asked Brown if he mucked up the sprint by going too early or too late, he simply replied: "I think Ruben was better on the day." Not that he minded. In fact, Brownie didn't seem to mind at all: "I don't mind coming second to my team-mate - we put the money in the can, so it's alright." And what about the Dom Perignon? "Yeah, I spoke to him [directtore sportivo Roberto Reverberi] about that", he replied with a grin, "but I think we might have to put in a new proposal, a bit better [one] for another stage win, so I'm working on that... " While Bongiorno expressed his delight when crossing the line ahead of Brown and Antonio Salomone (Barloworld), the Argentinian speedster was less than receptive when confronted by the press: "The stage was a little boring, but it ended up alright," was all he had to say. Once again, a number of breakaways did try and spoil what was inevitably a day for the sprinters, but the combined forces of Bridgestone Anchor (the team of race leader Koji Fukushima) and Ceramica Panaria-Navigare kept the opportunists at bay. Fukushima held on to his golden jacket, but the mountains classification now rests on the shoulders of Briton Kristian House, who took the Cat. 4 mountain prime at the end of the stage to edge past Fukushima. "Today, the objective was to take the [mountains] jersey back," said House. "I've been sitting in second the last couple of days, and thanks to my team-mates, Paul [Manning] and Chris [Newton], who did an excellent job leading me out for the sprint." With the short but feared stage to Genting still two days away, the friendly, funky Fukushima is determined to stay at the top of the tree for at least 24 more hours. "I have to give thanks to my team-mates; they are not only very strong, but also very clever," he said, with eyes almost popping out of his head. "We had the right strategy today, and they [the team] worked very hard. I also want to keep the jersey for another day." How it unfoldedOn a slightly overcast morning in Kuala Berang, 133 riders lined out for the 152 kilometre sixth stage of the race. Three hot-spot sprints lay in wait: at Kg Dendang (37.4 kilometres), Dungun (71.6 km) and Kerteh (107.6), with the category 4 climb of Kijal following at kilometre 131.7. Seven kilometres into the stage, former world points race champion Chris Newton used his track speed to go clear after a very active start. The Great Britain rider got 12 seconds on the bunch and was soon joined by Jurgen Van De Walle of the Landbouwkrediet-Colnago team. They extended their lead to 15 seconds but were caught at the 13 kilometre point. A very active morning brought a flurry of attacks but it was difficult for any move to get a decent lead. Trent Wilson (Colombia Selle Italia) and Tom Southam (Barloworld-Valsir) went briefly clear but were reeled in. A more dangerous group went at kilometre 20, with Rodney Green (Barloworld-Valsir), Nico Sijmens (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) and Great Britain's Julian Winn joining forces to draw away. They were joined soon afterwards by Koen De Kort (Liberty Seguros), Denis Kraft (Action), Jurgen Van De Walle (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago), David Kopp (Wiesenhof) and Team Ireland's David McCann and, working together, the octet established a lead of 11 seconds. However, a reaction in the main bunch spelled an end to this break and also to a subsequent effort involving De Kort, Green, Sven Renders (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago), Oleg Grishkine (Navigators Insurance), Kopp and Ruggero Borghi (Domina Vacanze). A small move clipped away just before the hot-spot sprint at Kg Dendang, where Stefan Van Dijck (Mr Bookmaker.com - Sports Tech) took first ahead of points leader Graeme Brown (Ceramica Panaria) and Irish cyclo-cross champion Roger Aiken (Team Ireland). Trent Wilson (Colombia Selle Italia) was fourth. Following their recapture, a period of intense activity caused a big split in the bunch. 30 riders went clear, causing the bunch to line out in an eyeballs-out, 60 kilometres an hour bid to keep in touch. Once the peloton succeeded in getting back on terms a brief cease-fire broke out, with some of the riders take advantage of a lull in speed to liberally water the roadside foliage. Race leader Koji Fukushima's Bridgestone Anchor team then went to the front to set a steady pace, but this was not enough to dissuade an obviously-antsy Denis Kraft (Action) from attacking once again. He quickly built a lead of 11 seconds and was joined soon afterwards by Gregory Habeaux (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) and Thomas White (Great Britain). After establishing their maximum advantage of three minutes and ten seconds by kilometre 85, this trio fought out the second HotSpot Sprint of Dungun where Kraft took the points ahead of Habeaux and White. Stefan Van Dijck (MrBookmaker.com-Sports Tech) was fourth. This same finishing order was repeated at the third hot-spot sprint at Kerteh, after which the Ceramica Panaria team of points leader Graeme Brown set about closing the break. Once their lead fell to 1'30, Kraft attacked the other two riders in the break and still had most of this advantage with 30 kilometres to go. However, five kilometres later, this lead was down to 32 seconds, and very soon after that it was curtains for the German's stage win aspirations. Meanwhile, a large number of riders were trying to rejoin the field after being involved in a big pileup with 26 kilometres remaining in the stage; most of these did so, but it took a long chase to close the gap. The final intermediate sprint of the day came at kilometre 131, the Category 4 surge to the top of Kijal, and here Kristian House (Great Britain) took 4 points and, with it, regained the KOM lead from Koji Fukushima. Adam Wadecki (Action) and House's team-mate Julian Winn (Great Britain) were second and third. The speeding Panaria-led bunch stayed largely together from there until the line, with the exception of a brave but ultimately futile solo move by Wiesenhof's David Kopp. Once inside the final few hundred metres, the Ceramica-Panaria sprint domination continued, with Guillermo Bongiorno galloping first across the line in Cukai ahead of his team-mate Graeme Brown. Antonio Salomone (Barloworld Valsir) was third. Yellow jersey Koji Fukushima finished 75th on the stage, three seconds down on Bongiorno, but the Japanese rider easily held onto his race lead. He's clearly loving every day in yellow, and has at least one more stint at the top heading into tomorrow's 167.7 kilometre race to Raub.
