10th Telekom Malaysia Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, January 28-February 6, 2005Main Page Results Stage Details Previous Stage Stage 10 - February 6: Kuala Lumpur Criterium, 65 kmBrown gets back his b-b-bounceMission accomplished for Ryan CoxBy Anthony Tan in Kuala Lumpur Today in downtown KL, Aussie speed demon Graeme Brown finished where he started, never looking in doubt before taking his fifth stage win of the race in front of Argentinean team-mate Ruben Bongiorno and Oleg Grischkine (Navigators Insurance). The victory upped his record to nine after three participations and was Panaria's 24th in total, making his team the most successful ever based on individual stage wins. "Once again, it was a great ride by the team, and of course, Barloworld," said Brown, who probably thinking he was starting to sound like a broken record player. "Our plan was to stay on the front the whole day and control the race, and try to nullify all the attacks because we've got two very good sprinters; for obvious reasons we wanted to keep it for a sprint, and that's what we did." Tipped a number of years ago as a likely successor to Cipollini and challenger to Petacchi, McEwen, Zabel et al., but never quite living up to the media's or his own expectations, the 25 year-old looks poised to knock on the doors of sprinting's hall of fame once again. His real test will come a couple of months from now at the Giro d'Italia, where he will face his stiffest opposition yet. But first, he needs to be selected after a wayward 12 months on the road. "Basically, I've got to try and beat Petacchi," chuckled Brown to Cyclingnews when quizzed on what he's expecting to do in the world's second biggest bike race. "I really don't think I'm even close to my top form; I'm sprinting really well here and I'm feeling good in the sprints, but still not at 100 percent, so I've got a lot more things I can work on for the Giro." The Tour de Langkawi also found a champion in South African Ryan Cox, also 25 years old, whose visibly improved performance on the flat saw him almost win last Monday's time trial in Bachok, allowing his team to adopt a defensive strategy on the decisive eighth stage to Genting (see our interview with Cox from January 27 for more on this emerging South African rider). As a result, Cox 'only' had to follow the wheel of the 49 kilo flyweight Jose Rujano up the 17 kilometre-long climb - which he did so with ease, responding to each and every acceleration, before outsprinting the Venezuelan to take the stage and race lead. The following two days became a formality for Barloworld, who proved they not only had the strongest rider, but were also the strongest team, winning the teams classification by two and a half minutes from Colombia Selle Italia (also see our profile on Barloworld from February 1). "It's good to put on the yellow, and to finish the criterium no problems, because that was probably the biggest fear today - a puncture or a crash, or something like that - so we're very happy," said the jubilant Cox. "I just want to thank all those who stood behind me so far, and this is the start of many things to come. "My team rode super today; I think today was a stage with the two strongest team on the road, with Panaria and Barloworld on the front. With the force of the two teams together, I don't think anyone had a chance today; I lost no time and there were no crashes or anything, so it played out perfectly for me." It will be interesting to see how far Cox - and also his team-mate Tiaan Kannemeyer, who still managed to finish third overall - can go. Can these two young guns cut the mustard in the bigger races in Europe, where the competition is fiercer and the climbs more plentiful - or will they succumb to the Euro pressure cooker? "Hopefully, we'll get into the Giro - that's not sure yet," Cox said to Cyclingnews about his team's future aspirations in 2005. "I would want to go for a stage or maybe the king of the mountains competition - that would the main aim. My next aim for the season is the mid-season and towards the end again, so we go back now for the national champs in South Africa and then I'll take it a bit easy and build it up again for April." And it was only fitting to see Koji Fukushima wear the jersey of best Asian rider, who would have easily taken the 'Thomas Voeckler prize' of the Tour de Langkawi if there was one. The vivacious, attacking, opportunistic 31 year-old finally pulled off a stage win the only way he knows how; attacking from the gun and on his own, 172 kilometres from the finish on the third stage to Tanah Merah, before Koji-san rode himself into the record books by becoming the second-only Asian stage winner and the only rider to wear the leader's jersey in the race's 10-year history. "I am glad I can keep the [Asian riders'] jersey and I have much respect for Cox and his team. They are a very strong team and Graeme Brown's [team] also. We [Bridgestone Anchor] want to be a strong team like them, and one day, ride the Tour de France," said a hopeful Fukushima. How it unfoldedWith 10 six-and-a-half kilometre laps to be completed before the race was over for another year, today's stage was more like a kermesse than a criterium. And while smack-bang in the middle of downtown Kuala Lumpur, the start/finish right behind the Petronas Twin Towers, there wasn't the usual horde of traffic associated with one of Asia's busiest cities; Chinese New Year celebrations were right around the corner, and it appeared many Malay-Chinese had decided to stay home and prepare for the week-long (sometimes two weeks!) festival that begins this coming Wednesday. Naturally, Barloworld assumed the position (no dirty jokes, please) at the head of the 103-rider peloton on lap 1, before Koji Fukushima (surprise, surprise) and Fortunato Baliani (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) took off midway through lap 2. It didn't last long, however, and it was peloton groupé less than lap later. But Koji wasn't done. (When is he?!) This time, his bro Shinichi, fellow countryman Fumiyuki Beppu (Discovery Channel) and Marlon Perez (Colombia Selle Italia) came along for the ride on lap 4, although they were rarely out of sight of the Panaria-Barloworld led peloton, the four-man carrot dangling precariously out in front until the end of lap 7. Unfortunately, British rider Paul Manning was forced to abandon during this time after breaking his handlebars. Significantly, second-placed rider in the Asian rider competition, Tonton Susanto (Wismilak), placed second and third in the first two intermediate sprints, edging ever closer to Fukushima, but at the end of the day, the Indonesian fell just two seconds short of taking the jersey away from Koji-san. At two laps to go, Slovakian Matej Jurco (Domina Vacanze) decided to have a dig, but was caught soon after as Acqua & Sapone motioned their troops at the head of the flying arrow. Speaking of the water boys, Giuseppe Palumbo took off with a k and half to go and looked like doing a Rubens Bertogliati a là Stage 1 of the 2002 Tour... ... but Beppe was swallowed as Panaria hit the front inside the final kilometre, Brett Lancaster once again setting up Graeme Brown for his fifth stage win of the race, which he convincingly did so.
