The sleepy Canberra suburb of Melba exploded in a frenzy of dog fighting on Sunday when the Canberra BMX club played host to top BMX racers from around the country on the final afternoon of the Brindabella Challenge weekend..

In a day of and sun, spokes and spills where the wind dominated proceedings as much as cycling clothes with colour pallets from 1983, sprockets right up to pro's battled it out for $8000 in prize money on a track like a serpent's spine.

The ACT's Caroline Buchanan took out the Pro Open Ladies, Terrigal's Joshua Phillips the A Men's, and Penrith's Luke Madill conquered the AA Men's.

"It was a tough race" said Madill. "The standard of competition is definitely high in Australia." With ten years of international professional racing behind him, Madill is confident that the greatest challenges exist in Australia saying: "We're definitely faster over here than they are in the US." And with events like Brindabella Challenge on the cards, Aussie competition is sure to improve.
