Tour of Britain - 2.1Great Britain, August 30-September 4, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Stage 6 - September 4: London-London, 64kmStage and overall for Quick.StepBy Shane Stokes in London Belgian rider Nick Nuyens safely retained his race lead on the concluding stage of the Tour of Britain today, finishing 9th in the bunch sprint with decided the Westminster criterium in London. Quick Step team-mate Luca Paolini made it a doubly-successful day for the Belgian team, taking his second victory of the race and with it the green points jersey. Last year's final stage winner Enrico Degano (Barloworld Valsir) was second in the mass gallop, with Great Britain's Roger Hammond and Ciarán Power (Navigators Insurance) next across the line. Paolini was very satisfied at what has been an excellent team performance in the 2.1 ranked event. "It has been a good race for Quick Step because I have won two stages and Nick [Nuyens] has won two stages. Nick and I are going very well at the moment, we ride well together and I hope that these victories can help us to win more in the next few weeks." "The team rode really well in the lead up to the sprint. They were on the front for the whole of the last lap, doing more than 60 kilometres an hour. So there wasn't any confusion behind. I was third going into the last corner and jumped about 200 metres to go. I think I won it pretty well. Many people were predicting a tussle with the highly promising British sprinter Mark Cavendish, who outsprinted Paolini for third place in Blackpool. However the 20 year old crashed in the closing stages after he ran into the back wheel of another rider. "One of the Barloworld riders did his turn on the front. He was dropping back and wasn't looking where he was going," he said. "He slowed right down before a corner and took out my front wheel." Paolini said the victory was important for him and the team. "We wanted to win the stage here in London as it is an important finish and, with four stages and two jerseys, I think that Quick Step have had a great Tour of Britain." Although there were bonus up for grabs during the stage, Nuyen's main rival Michael Blaudzun (Team CSC) was unable to take back any time today, ending the six day event eight seconds behind. Javier Cherro Molina (Comunidad Valenciana) was third ahead of Phil Zajicek (Navigators Insurance) and last year's KOM winner, Ben Day (MrBookmaker.com). Paolini and Nuyen's consistency was reflecting in the fact that they finished first and second in the points classification. Wales national team rider Julian Winn took the mountains jersey while T-Mobile captured the team award. They had success in the intermediate sprints competition, too, with Eric Baumann placing second in the first bonus sprint and winning the second, thus cementing his hold on the jersey. Nuyens was the man of the day, however, leading the race from start to finish and confirming his status as one of Belgium's most promising young talents. He's made his name as the winner of one day races such as Paris-Brussels and Het Volk, but showed this week that he's also pretty adept at multi-day events. "This is my second big stage race win after the Electro Tour in Holland last year, and I am really happy," he said. "Taking a stage and also winning the time trial is great, too." Nuyens had a lead of eight seconds over Michael Blaudzun heading into the race but said beforehand that he was faster in a sprint, giving him the edge if it came down to a scrap for bonus seconds. However he was taking nothing for granted before the stage. "There is always danger, such as a crash. If you are in one, it sucks. But provided I stayed out of trouble, I only had to watch out for Blaudzun. On this occasion he didn't really try to get some seconds." "You always have to watch out on the last few laps coming to the finish and be careful. There were some pretty dangerous moments, like the run-up to the sprints - some guys just take some risks, so I needed to watch out. The team were really good, they went a bit faster when it became too dangerous so that was great." Quick Step rode impressively in the latter half of the stage, assuming control of the bunch. They got a hand out early on by the Barloworld team, who were chasing the stage victory. "Before the stage we were speaking about trying to control the race but it is impossible, because it is a really small circuit and everyone is going really fast," continued Nuyens. "There were a lot of attacks so it is really difficult. But we were lucky because we got some help from Team Barloworld, who were trying to line up the sprint for Degano, who won last year. I think we were going so fast that nobody could go away. They tried a lot but they were brought back immediately. So it was a good race for us." How it unfoldedA huge crowd turned out to watch the final stage of the Tour of Britain, held on a flat, fast circuit in sunny central London. The criterium course took the riders past landmarks such as Big Ben, Nelson's Column/Trafalgar Square and Downing Street, ensuring a good mix of cycling fans and inquisitive tourists and generating a great atmosphere for the conclusion of the event. Things got underway at 3pm, following a number of support races for elites, juniors, women, and Paralympic riders. Once the flag was dropped on the main contest, there was a constant stream of attacks, fuelled in equal measure by the crowd's support and a total of six intermediate sprints. An early surge by riders from the Bridgestone Anchor and Driving Force Logistic teams was joined by a small number of other competitors, following which the small break built a lead of four seconds. Roger Hammond (Great Britain), Paul Healion (Team DFL) and Dean Downing were amongst those present, but despite some hard riding, the Barloworld Valsir bunch hauled them back soon afterwards. Ireland's David McCann and Bridgestone Anchor's Koji Fukushima were next to try but they too were recaptured. The first bonus sprint of the day went to Kevin Van Impe (Chocolade Jacques) ahead of T-Mobile's Eric Baumann, who was in the process of cementing his grip on the sprints jersey. His team-mate Bastiaan Giling won the first TFL prime. British rider Roger Hammond ensured a huge cheer when he attacked, staying away for two laps, with Ireland's Paul Griffin next to try after his recapture. He too was hauled back. Baumann then proved quickest at the second bonus sprint, while TFL Prime 2 fell to Yanto Barker (Driving Force Logistics). Fukushima went away once more and then, once back in the fold, Healion raced clear. He built a maximum lead of five seconds before being reeled in. Fellow Irishman McCann then counterattacked, riding hard with Evan Oliphant (Scotland) and Martin Ford (DFL) and staying away until after the third bonus sprint, taken by Oliphant. Team Barloworld's British rider Tom Southam won the final TFL prime. Things were all together with eight laps remaining. A Quick Step-Barloworld combine was in action to ensure a bunch sprint and, sure enough, this is the way things turned out. The riders thundered up the finishing straight in an all-out burst for the line, Paolini galloping in ahead of Degano, Hammond, Power and CSC's Lars Michelsen. Great Britain's Mark Cavendish had been aiming for a strong finish but limped home off the back following a crash, while Bert de Waele (Landbouwkrediet Colnago) was also delayed, dropping from 6th to 12th overall. Ben Day moved down too, dropping a place to fifth behind Navigators' Phil Zajicek. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by PhotoSport International/John Pierce
