Tour of Britain - 2.1Great Britain, August 30-September 4, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - September 3: Birmingham ITT, 4kmNuyens defends jersey in styleBy Shane Stokes in Birmingham Nick Nuyens (Quick.Step) defended his race lead in style today when he won the fifth stage time trial of the Tour of Britain in Birmingham. The Belgian rider clocked an impressive time of 4'54.06 on what was a twisting, technical 4 km course in the city centre. Team CSC's Kurt Asle Arvesen was second, 0.75 seconds down, while team-mate and Nuyens' closest rival, Michael Blaudzun, was third. He was 1.21 seconds back. British rider Paul Manning (Recycling.co.uk) had a fine ride, placing fourth. World time trial champion Michael Rogers (QuickStep) was a little less at home on the tight circuit, finishing just over 5 seconds behind Nuyens in fifth, while fellow Aussie Ben Day (MrBookmaker.com) completed the top six. Today's result was Nuyens' first time trial win as a pro. He started the day 7 seconds behind Blaudzun, who said prior to the test that he would go all out in a bid to erase this deficit and win the race. However, the Dane ended up losing more time, slipping a further second behind the in-form Belgian. With the 2.1 ranked event concluding tomorrow with a 45 lap circuit race in London city centre, it looks all but certain that Nuyens will succeed the 2004 victor Mauricio Ardila as Tour of Britain champion. The 25 year-old was delighted with his stage win, but was remaining slightly cautious about the overall victory. "Tomorrow evening it is sure. It seems like I have good chance now. I am faster than Blaudzun and it is not even certain that he is going to try to take bonus seconds in the sprints. Tomorrow's race is not too far and as long as there is not a breakaway, I am happy. The team is really strong so I have a good chance tomorrow evening." Nuyens was quick to pay tribute to the Quick.Step squad. "My team have been really good all week. We have six riders and with me not pulling, there are five. That means it is not easy, because the stages are really hard with a lot of wind. But they rode great. So I owe them something, that is why I wanted to win the stage. And if I won the stage, I would be sure to keep the jersey. "When I heard the time of Arvesen, I knew it would be hard to win. He is really strong, I knew he would do well. My main goal was to keep the jersey, I just had to go really hard to ensure that. Now I have the stage win as well, so it is very satisfying." He said earlier this week that Blaudzun was a more natural time trialist, but stated today that the course suited his own characteristics well. "For me the course was perfect. It was not too long at 4 kilometres, there were some turns, it was not completely flat. As I am an explosive rider, it is good for me. If it was held over 50 kilometres then Blaudzun is better than me. But this is not a real time trial, it is more a long sprint. "This is my first time trial win as a professional. A lot of times I finished in the first five but I couldn't win as a pro. So it's a good moment." How it unfoldedToday's 4 kilometre time trial took place on a tight circuit in Birmingham city centre, a spectator friendly course which would place equal emphasis on speed and cornering ability from the competitors. As expected, Britain's track riders performed well on a course well suited to their abilities, with Ben Hallam (Driving Force Logistics), Mark Cavendish (Great Britain), Rob Hayles (Recycling.co.uk) and then his team-mate Chris Newton all topping the leaderboard at some point. Arvesen then beat Newton's time with a strong mark of 4 minutes 54.81 seconds, the first to go below the five minute barrier. This became the standard to beat, with riders such as Rogers, Manning and Blaudzun all going close but missing out. The Norwegian looked set to take a fine win, but a yellow-inspired Nuyens thundered around the course to go 0.75" quicker, securing his first professional TT victory in the process. He now carries a lead of eight seconds over Blaudzun and 23 seconds over Javier Cherro Molina (Comunidad Valenciana) into tomorrow's final stage, making it likely that he will hold the leader's jersey from start to finish and win this 2.1 ranked event.
