Tour of Britain - 2.1Great Britain, August 30-September 4, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - September 1: Leeds - Sheffield, 160kmMore success for Quick.StepBy Shane Stokes in Sheffield Today's third stage of the Tour of Britain proved to be another successful one for the Quick.Step team. Luca Paolini beat T-Mobile's Bram Schmitz and eight other breakaway companions to take the win, while Nick Nuyens fended off all attempts by Michael Blaudzun (Team CSC) plus his other rivals to retain his race lead. The stage from Leeds to Sheffield was the hardest of this year's race, with the category two climbs of Cow and Calf, and Oxenhope being followed by the first cat Holme Moss and Snake Pass. Paolini was part of a 13-man move which went clear inside the first 10 kilometres and stayed clear for the day, while behind world time trial champion Michael Rogers and the rest of the Quick.Step team neutralised all attacks on the yellow jersey of Nick Nuyens. Paolini, Schmitz, Jose Luis Martinez Jimenez (Comunidad Valenciana) and Barloworld-Valsir's Ryan Cox went clear on the final, unclassified climb but there was a regrouping before the finish, with the Italian and German fighting it out for the win between them. British road race champion Russell Downing (Recycling.co.uk) took third ahead of Tony Bracke (Landbouwkrediet Colnago), Cox and new KOM leader Julian Winn (Wales), while Nuyens, Blaudzun and five others came in 3 minutes and 39 seconds down. Roger Aiken was tenth across the line, but he and Ireland manager Morgan Fox were later disqualified from the race after judges said that the rider had held onto the team car. "This is a great day for Quick.Step," said a happy Paolini at the post-race press conference. "Last year we had stage wins with Boonen and Zanini and this year we have had my stage win, Nick's stage win, the yellow jersey and the green. It is going very well for the team." "The first objective was to keep the jersey, but then once I got into the breakaway it was good for us because no-one was a danger in the classification after Eric Baumann [T-Mobile] dropped back. I knew I had a good chance because I can climb and I can sprint. So we took a double today - we kept the jersey and we won the stage." How it unfoldedA total of 92 riders lined out for the day's start in Leeds, in cloudy but mild conditions. Steffen Wesemann (T-Mobile) attacked in the first kilometre of the race and got a gap of several hundred metres. A group set off in pursuit but were caught by the main bunch, as was Wesemann after about six kilometres of freedom. Almost immediately, a 13-man group broke away and swiftly opened up some time on the peloton. Present were Luca Paolini, Ivan Santaromita (Quick.Step), Eric Baumann, Bram Schmitz (T-Mobile), Russell Downing, Dean Downing (Recycling.co.uk), Wesley Van der Linden (Chocolade Jacques), Geraint Thomas (Great Britain), Jose Luis Martinez Jimenez (Comunidad Valenciana), Ryan Cox (Barloworld Valsir), Tony Bracke (Landbouwkrediet Colnago), Roger Aiken (Ireland) and Julian Winn (Wales). These had a gap of 1 minute and 41 seconds after 15 kilometres, and this continued to grow. Baumann was best placed overall in 20th, 1 minute and 18 seconds behind race leader Nick Nuyens (Quick.Step). He took the bonus sprint at Otley (19.5 km) and with it, regained his lead in the sprints classification. Russell Downing was second with Van der Linden third. Several kilometres later they hit the start of the Cow and Calf climb (31.9 km), a steep and crowd-thronged second category ascent. Winn took the points ahead of Tour de Langkawi champion Ryan Cox at the top, with the peloton passing the same point 1 minute and 29 seconds later. This lead continued to fall, dropping to 1 minute and 15 seconds, but once the GC threat Baumann dropped back to the main field with Santaromita it began to rise again. Passing through the town of Keighley, the eleven man leading group had an advantage of 4 minutes and 16 seconds over the peloton, and this climbed to 5 minutes and 49 seconds by the start of the second category Oxenhope ascent. By the time they hit the feed zone (83.4 km), they had added just over a minute to this buffer, and by Huddersfield (90 km) it was up to a healthy 7 minutes and 55 seconds. Dean Downing and Aiken were dropped on the early part of the difficult Holme Moss climb, with the other nine riders pressing on. Winn jumped away about a third of the way up in search of King of the Mountains points and opened up a strong lead. The peloton were at this point 9 minutes and 35 seconds behind. Winn was caught by six others on the climb, namely Cox, Schmitz, Paolini, Russell Downing, Van der Linden and Martinez Jiminez. Thomas and Bracke were also in trouble. Once the peloton hit the climb, there were several big attacks. British rider Tom Southam (Barloworld), eighth overall, and last year's King of the Mountains winner Ben Day (MrBookmaker.com) went clear. They were joined by David Munoz Banon (Comunidad Valenciana), but the Quick.Step-led peloton brought them back. Nuyens was sitting comfortably in third position. Heading over the top, the gap between the seven leaders and the bunch was 9 minutes and 20 seconds. Winn took maximum points, ahead of Cox, Martinez Jimenez and Paolini. Aiken was adrift of the break but the Irish cyclo-cross champion rode well and got back on. So too Dean Downing, Thomas and Bracke, the three riding together to get back in touch. However they were under pressure again shortly afterwards once on the Snake Pass climb, dropping off the back of the splintering front group. Winn, Cox, Paolini, Schmitz, Martinez Jiminez and Van der Linden were first past the summit, while the bunch hit the base of Snake Pass some10 minutes and 29 seconds behind. It was clear that the day's winner would come from the front group. Antonio Olmo Menacho (Comunidad Valenciana) set off in an attempt to close an insurmountable gap, getting away from the peloton and opening up a good lead. Up front, there was a regrouping on the descent, with Aiken getting back on to the other seven riders. Dean Downing, Thomas and Bracke were further behind but they too got across, joining with the rest of the break along the valley floor and resuming their input into the pacemaking. With 25 kilometres to go, the gap was 7 minutes and 45 seconds back to the peloton, with Olmo Menacho still stranded in no-man's land. Thomas got dropped inside the last 20 kilometres, the final unclassified - but difficult - climb taking it's toll on the 19 year old rider. Further behind, the Quick.Step and CSC-led peloton reeled in Olmo Menacho, after which Ben Day had another go. He was caught. Once onto the climb, a group of heavy-hitters went clear of the peloton, with yellow jersey Nick Nuyens, second-placed Michael Blaudzun and CSC team-mate Kurt Asle Arvesen, Frederik Veuchelen (Chocolade Jacques), Ben Day (MrBookmaker.com), Phil Zajicek (Navigators Insurance), Javier Cherro Molina (Comunidad Valenciana) and Bert de Waele (Landbouwkrediet Colnago) all present. Meanwhile up front, aggressive riding by Martinez Jiminez and Schmitz caused a four man split, with Paolini and Cox quick to respond to the move. Winn and Russell Downing were chasing, while Dean Downing, Bracke, Van der Linden and Aiken were all shelled. The latter got back in touch with the other three, and these then made their way gradually back up to the leaders. However, another surge on the run-in to the end in Sheffield saw Paolini go clear and hold off Schmitz for the win. Russell Downing, Bracke, Cox and Winn finished two seconds back, with Martinez Jimenez, Dean Downing, Van der Linden and Aiken further adrift but all taking places in the top ten. The latter was subsequently disqualified for pacing, elevating eleventh-placed Thomas in the day's standings. Cherro Molina led in the Nuyens-Blaudzun group 3 minutes and 39 seconds after Paolini's victory.
